W: Exercise, exercise, exercise. We hear so much about it these days, yet even the experts can’t agree on which exercises are best. Now some doctors are strongly encouraging arm exercises. M: Arm exercises Is that because our arms are too fat or flabby W: Actually, that’s not the main reason. They say that arm exercises are an ideal way to become physically fit. M: But don’t arm exercises raise your blood pressure W: That they do. But the article I read mentioned ways to compensate for that. M: How W: By adding leg exercises, so the arms don’t do all the work. Arm exercises alone aren’t enough to increase metabolism before fatigue sets in it. The more of the body that’s involved in the exercises, the better. M: And in turn, I’m sure that there’s a great chance of losing weight. W: Sounds right to me. The terms "global warming" and "climate change" are used by many, seemingly interchangeably. But do they really mean the same thing? Scientists shaped the history of the terms while attempting to accurately describe how humans continue to alter the planet.Later, political strategists adopted the terms to influence public opinion. In 1975,geochemist Wallace Broecker introduced the term "climate change" in an article published by Science. In 1979,a National Academy of Sciences report used the term "global warming" to define increases in the Earth's average surface temperature, while "climate change" more broadly referred to the numerous effects of this increase, such as sea-level rise and ocean acidification(酸化). During the following decades, some industrialists and politicians launched a campaign to sow doubt inthe minds of the American public about the ability of fossil-fuel use, deforestation and other human activities to influence the planet's climate. Word use played a critical role in developing that doubt. For example, the language and polls expert Frank Luntz wrote a memo encouraging the use of "climate change" because the phrase sounded less scary than "global warming," reported the Guardian. However,Luntz's recommendation wasn't necessary.A Google Ngram Viewer chart shows that by 1993 climate change was already more commonly used in books than global warming.By the end of the next decade both words were used more frequently, and climate change was used nearly twice as often as global warming. NASA used the term "climate change" because it more accurately reflects the wide range of changes to the planet caused by increasing amounts of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. The debate isn't new.A century ago, chemist Svante Arrhenius started one of the first debates over the potential for humans to influence the planet's climate.Arrhenius calculated the capability of carbon dioxide to trap heat in the Earth's atmosphere, but other chemists disagreed. Some argued that humans weren't producing enough greenhouse gases, while others claimed the effects would be tiny. Now,of course,we know that whatever you call it,human behavior is warming the planet, with grave consequences ahead.(1)Why did politicians use the two terms "global warming" and "climate change"? ______A.To sway public opinion of the impact of human activities on Earth.B.To more accurately describe the consequences of human activities.C.To win more popular votes in their campaign activities.D.To assure the public of the safety of existing industries.(2)As used in a National Academy of Sciences report, the term "climate change" differs from "globalwarming" in that ______A.it sounds less vagueB.it looks more scientificC.it covers more phenomenaD.it is much closer to reality(3)What did industrialists of the late 20th century resort to in order to mislead Americans? ______A.Made-up survey results.B.Hired climate experts.C.False research findings.D.eliberate choice of words.(4)What is the author's final conclusion? ______A.Global warming is the more accurate term.B.Accuracy of terminology matters in science.C.Human activities have serious effects on Earth.D.Politics interferes with serious scientific debate.

The Harry Potter series, written by J.K. Rowling, is perhaps the most popular set of novels of the modern era. With seven books and many successful films to its name, the series has gathered about 15 billion dollars in sales. How did the series become so popular? The reason can be broken down into several areas. The first book in the series was rejected 12 times before it was picked up by Bloomsbury—a small publisher in England. So receiving this contract was Rowling's first step to success. However, getting a book contract does not ensure the success of a book. The story was soon loved by children and adults alike. In light of this, Bloomsbury Publishing published a second version of the books with “adult” (less colorful and more boring) book covers. This made it easier for a full range of ages to enjoy the series.Another factor that worked like a charm was that the publisher and Rowling herself, through the books, conducted midnight releases, promotions, and pre-ordering more readers. Customers who feared that their local bookstore would run out of copies responded by pre-ordering over 700,000 copies before the July 8, 2000 release. What does the underlined word “releases” (Para. 3) mean?A. The activity that frees or expresses energy or emotion.B. The announcement about the book’s publishing information.C. The sales of books that is available only at midnight.

The increase in international business and in foreign investment has created a need for executives with knowledge of foreign languages and skills in cross-cultural communication. Americans, however, have not been well trained in either area and, consequently, have not enjoyed the same level of success in negotiation in an international arena as have their foreign counterparts. Negotiating is the process of communicating back and forth for the purpose of reaching an agreement. It involves persuasion and compromise, but in order to participate in either one, the negotiators must understand the ways in which people are persuaded and how compromise is reached within the culture of the negotiation. In many international business negotiations abroad, Americans are perceived as wealthy and impersonal. It often appears to the foreign negotiator that the American represents a large multi-million-dollar corporation that can afford to pay the price without bargaining further. The American negotiator’s role becomes that of an impersonal supplier of information and cash. In studies of American negotiators abroad, several traits have been identified that may serve to confirm this stereotypical perception, while undermining the negotiator’s position. Two traits in particular that cause cross-cultural misunderstanding are directness and impatience on the part of the American negotiator. Furthermore, American negotiators often insist on realizing short-term goals. Foreign negotiators, on the other hand, may value the relationship established between negotiators and may be willing to invest time in it for long-term benefits. In order to solidify the relationship, they may opt for indirect interactions without regard for the time involved in getting to know the other negotiator. Clearly, perceptions and differences in values affect the outcomes of negotiations and the success of negotiators. For Americans to play a more effective role in international business negotiations, they must put forth more effort to improve cross-cultural understanding. [共5题](1)What kind of manager is needed in present international business and foreign investment? [本题2分]A. The man who represents a large multi-million-dollar corporation. B. The man with knowledge of foreign languages and skills in cross-cultural communication. C. The man who is wealthy and impersonal. D. The man who can negotiate with his foreign counterparts.
