What did the author’s own research find about social media?Social media can be a powerful communication tool for employees, helping them to collaborate, share ideas and solve problems. Research has shown that 82% of employees think social media can improve work relationships and 60% believe it can support decision-making processes. These beliefs contribute to a majority of workers connecting with colleagues on social media, even during work hours.Employers typically worry that social media is a productivity killer; more than half of U.S. employers reportedly block access to social media at work. In my research with 277 employees of a healthcare organization I found these concerns to be misguided. Social media doesn’t reduce productivity nearly as much as it kills employee retention. In the first part of the study I surveyed the employees about why and how they used platforms like Facebook, Twitter, or LinkedIn. Respondents were then asked about their work behaviors, including whether they felt motivated in their jobs and showed initiative at work. I found employees who engage in online social interactions with co-workers through social media blogs tend to be more motivated and come up with innovative ideas. But when employees interact with individuals outside the organization, they are less motivated and show less initiative. In the second part of the study I found 76% of employees using social media for work took an interest in other organizations they found on social media. When I examined how respondents expressed openness to new careers and employers, I found that they engaged in some key activities including researching new organizations and making new work connections. These findings present a dilemma for managers: employees using social media at work are more engaged and more productive, but they are also more likely to leave your company. Managers should implement solutions that neutralize the retention risk caused by social media. They can create social media groups in which employees will be more likely to collaborate and less likely to share withdrawal intentions or discussions about external job opportunities. Managers can also use social media to directly reduce turnover (跳槽) intentions, by recognizing employees’ accomplishments and giving visibility to employees’ success stories.A、It influences employees’ work negatively.B、It does much harm to employee loyalty.C、It kills employees’ motivation for work.D、It affects employers’ decision-making.
Are you diligently exercising but seeing no result around your midsection(上腹部)? It's not just you. Two new studies may explain why many people who begin exercise programs often lose little to no weight in the long run.In the first study, published in the online science journal PLoS One, researchers compared the daily energy consumption of Westerners and the Hadza, a population of hunter-gatherers living in northern Tanzania. Many believe modern Westerners burn fewer calories than in the past because their lives have become more sedentary(久坐的). The Hadza, who are generally very thin, hunt and look for food without modern tools such as vehicles or guns. Men walk about seven miles each day, while women walk about half that. What was surprising was that although the Hadza seem to be more active, the researchers found little difference in calories burned between the Hadza and the Westerners. The second study, published in Obesity Reviews, analyzed the effect of exercise interventions on body composition. The researchers found that—contrary to popular belief—when people exercise but keep their energy intake constant, their resting metabolic(新陈代谢的)rate actually goes down. Exercises who ate more calories than they usually do did burn more fat than predicted, but some overate and negated the effects of their hard work. These studies suggest two things: exercise programs may not lead to as much calories burn as you would think, and many people start eating more when they exercise, and they may eat too much.Bottom line, if you start exercising to lose weight, you won't succeed with the mentality of “I can eat anything because I'll burn it off later.” You will have better results if you choose a healthy diet of whole grains, fruits and vegetables, lean proteins and healthy fats while exercising. Although these two studies show that diet may be more important than exercise for weight loss, don't discount the other benefits of exercise, including decreased stress and anxiety, improved mood and reduced risk of cardiovascular(心血管的)disease, diabetes and some cancers.【小题1】What dose the two studies show in common?A.Exercises are of great benefit.B.Exercises make people eat too much.C.Dieting may be not so helpful for weight loss.D.Exercises do not necessarily lead to weight loss.【小题2】What does the underlined word “negated” mean?A.Improved.B.Doubled.C.Denied.D.Aroused.【小题3】The text is most likely to be found in ______.A.a science magazineB.a book reviewC.a health guidelineD.a news report
Please watch the video and fill in the blanks. This is the photo of Sara Imas and her father. Just like many other Jews living in Europe, Imas’ father endured a lot of cruelty during World War II. To escape the Nazi regime, he had to leave his homeland. Worse still, the Évian Conference, which was convened in France in 1938 to discuss the problem of Jewish refugees fleeing Germany, had little impact on the plight of the refugees.During this unprecedented tragedy, some six million Jews were killed just because of who they were. While other countries shut their doors to the refugees, China welcomed them.At least 500 Jewish babies were born in Shanghai. Eighty-year-old Sonja Mühlberger was among them, too.“My mother was1) with me. And they came from Germany to Shanghai in April 1939.”“And then they would travel all the way here to Shanghai. So we had no problems with them.”The fate of the Jewish refugees later became closely intertwined with that of their Chinese counterparts in Shanghai. In 1945, when the world won its war against Fascism, the Jewish refugees in Shanghai started to seek information about their families back in Europe. But with only sad news coming, the Jews in Shanghai soon realized that leaving their homeland, although heartrending, might have been the best decision they had ever made.To help 6)______ their history, the Hongkou District Government opened the Shanghai Jewish Refugees Museum in 2007 in a renovated Moshe Synagogue inside a former Jewish residential complex. In September 2014, a 7) ______ wall with the names of 13,732 Jewish refugees was erected at the museum. Intelligence makes for better leaders - from undergraduates to managers to presidents - according to multiple studies. It certainly makes sense that handling a market shift or anything alike require intelligence. But new research on leadership suggests that, at a certain point, having a higher IQ stops helping and starts hurting. Although previous research has shown that groups with smarter leaders perform better by objective measures, some studies have suggested that followers might subjectively view leaders with extremely high intellect as less effective. Decades ago, Dean Simonton, a psychologist from the University of California, Davis, proposed that brilliant leaders' words may simply go over people's heads, their solutions could be more complicated to carry out and followers might find it harder to relate to them. Now Simonton and two colleagues have finally tested that idea, publishing their results in the July 2017 issue of the Journal of Applied Psychology. The researchers looked at 379 male and female business leaders in 30 countries across fields including banking, retail and technology. The managers took IQ tests and each was rated on leadership style and effectiveness by an average of eight co-workers. IQ positively correlated(和……正相关) with ratings of leader effectiveness, strategy formation, vision and several other characteristics - up to a point. The ratings peaked at an IQ of around 120, which is higher than roughly 80 percent of office workers. Beyond that, the ratings declined. The researchers suggest the "ideal" IQ could be higher or lower in various fields, to 140 or 100, depending on whether technical or social skills are more valued in a given work culture. "It's an interesting and thoughtful paper," says Paul Sackett, a management professor at University of Minnesota, who was not involved in the research. "To me. the right interpretation of the work would be that it highlights a need to understand what high-IQ leaders do that leads to lower understanding by followers," he says. "The wrong interpretation would be, 'Don't hire high-IQ leaders.'" The study's lead author, John Antonakis, a psychologist at the University of Lausanne in Switzerland, suggests leaders should use their intelligence to use creative language that will persuade and inspire others - the way former U.S. President Barack Obama did. "I think the only way a smart person can signal their intelligence properly and still connect with the people," Antonakis says, "is to speak in charming ways."(1)The reason why those with high IQs are viewed as worse leaders is probably that ____ .A. followers think of their leaders to be effectiveB. their IQ has a positive correlation with leader effectivenessC. they are hard to get their schemes across to followersD. their social skills can't be recognized in some work culture(2)Which of the following graphs shows the correct relationship between IQ points and leadership qualities? ____ IQ points IQ points-|||-A. 120 B. 120 - --|||-100 100-|||-Leadership qualities Leadership qualities-|||-IQ points IQ points-|||-C. 120 D. 120 --|||-100 100-|||-Leadership qualities Leadership qualities(3)To improve their leadership, high-IQ leaders can ____ .A. interpret the work they are involved inB. use inspiring and accessible languageC. take a course in leader effectivenessD. communication more with their followers(4)What could be the best title for the passage? ____ A. question or statement.Hot pot is a traditional dish in China. It is believed to date back more than 1,000 years to the time of the Jin Dynasty. Hot pot's origins can be found in the dining practices of Mongolian horsemen who rode across the steppe and into northern China. Legend has it that the Mongols used their helmets as pots to simmer (炖) broth (汤底) over open fires, and cooked chunks of meat in the broth.Hot pot cooking seems to have spread to northern China during the Tang Dynasty. In the regional variations developed with different ingredients such as seafood. In the centuries that witnessed the growth of the Song Dynasty, hot pot moved — and changed — further south, with each successive region adapting it to their local ingredients and tastes. The ingredients in a hot pot vary a lot from region to region. Perhaps the most famous hot pot is the Chongqing or Sichuan hot pot. It features a dark red broth chock-full (塞满了的) of spices, chili peppers, and the uniquely mouth-numbing Sichuan peppers. In Beijing and elsewhere in the north, hot pot broth tends to be mild and, compared to its racy southern "cousins", a little light. In the northeast of China, a kind of local sauerkraut (酸菜) is used to add some tang (强烈的味道), making the broth a bit sour. People can choose a version of hot pot according to their taste.1 Hot pot is believed to date back more than 1,000 years to the time of _______.A. the Jin Dynasty B. the Tang DynastyC. the Song Dynasty D. the Yuan Dynasty

The increase in international business and in foreign investment has created a need for executives with knowledge of foreign languages and skills in cross-cultural communication. Americans, however, have not been well trained in either area and, consequently, have not enjoyed the same level of success in negotiation in an international arena as have their foreign counterparts. Negotiating is the process of communicating back and forth for the purpose of reaching an agreement. It involves persuasion and compromise, but in order to participate in either one, the negotiators must understand the ways in which people are persuaded and how compromise is reached within the culture of the negotiation. In many international business negotiations abroad, Americans are perceived as wealthy and impersonal. It often appears to the foreign negotiator that the American represents a large multi-million-dollar corporation that can afford to pay the price without bargaining further. The American negotiator’s role becomes that of an impersonal supplier of information and cash. In studies of American negotiators abroad, several traits have been identified that may serve to confirm this stereotypical perception, while undermining the negotiator’s position. Two traits in particular that cause cross-cultural misunderstanding are directness and impatience on the part of the American negotiator. Furthermore, American negotiators often insist on realizing short-term goals. Foreign negotiators, on the other hand, may value the relationship established between negotiators and may be willing to invest time in it for long-term benefits. In order to solidify the relationship, they may opt for indirect interactions without regard for the time involved in getting to know the other negotiator. Clearly, perceptions and differences in values affect the outcomes of negotiations and the success of negotiators. For Americans to play a more effective role in international business negotiations, they must put forth more effort to improve cross-cultural understanding. The Harry Potter series, written by J.K. Rowling, is perhaps the most popular set of novels of the modern era. With seven books and many successful films to its name, the series has gathered about 15 billion dollars in sales. How did the series become so popular? The reason can be broken down into several areas. The first book in the series was rejected 12 times before it was picked up by Bloomsbury—a small publisher in England. So receiving this contract was Rowling's first step to success. However, getting a book contract does not ensure the success of a book. The story was soon loved by children and adults alike. In light of this, Bloomsbury Publishing published a second version of the books with “adult” (less colorful and more boring) book covers. This made it easier for a full range of ages to enjoy the series.Another factor that worked like a charm was that the publisher and Rowling herself, through the books, conducted midnight releases, promotions, and pre-ordering more readers. Customers who feared that their local bookstore would run out of copies responded by pre-ordering over 700,000 copies before the July 8, 2000 release. What does the underlined word “releases” (Para. 3) mean?A. The activity that frees or expresses energy or emotion.B. The announcement about the book’s publishing information.C. The sales of books that is available only at midnight.
