A theme is emerging from the flood of recent corporate earnings reports: cost cuts are boosting profits. Investors are cheering, but they shouldn’t. Even in these tough times, more CEOs should be talking about how they are seeking out investments, developing new technologies and making acquisitions. That’s what will set their companies up for a stronger future. Intel Corp.’s former CEO Gordon Moore had it right when he said years ago that “you can’t save your way out of a recession.” He meant that even in the toughest times, companies have to spend money on new ideas. Recessions always end, Moore often said, and when they do, companies that embraced innovation (创新) during the downturn won’t be stuck with obsolete products and services. Instead, they’ll have new things to offer once demand picks up again. “Customers don’t come out of recessions spending the way they did before,” said Chunka Mui, who has studied how companies can capitalise on opportunities during crises at his Chicago-based consulting firm, The Devil’s Advocate Group. “They demand something different.” Surprisingly few companies are following Moore’s advice of innovating during recessions. Many have been weakened by the pullback in consumer and business spending as well as tight credit conditions, which is making it harder for companies to get loans to fund their operations. That’s driven some to hold cash and make drastic cost cuts. They’re slashing (大幅度削减) jobs and wages and closing stores and factories. The aggressive cuts have allowed companies to exceed Wall Street’s expectations for their earnings. In fact, the “good” news has sent the Dow Jones industrial average above 10,000 for the first time in a year. The problem is that too many companies are making widespread, not focused cuts. They’re telling every division to cut 10 percent of their work force or slashing marketing dollars by the same amount companywide. “That is a quick way to rid a company of costs. But it doesn’t help it get in a better position going forward”, says Cesare Mainardi, managing director at the consulting firm Booz & Co. and co-author of the new book Cut Costs , Grow Stronger , “and a downturn like this should force people’s hand”. 1 What does the author think companies should do during a recession? A Cut jobs and wages so as to save more money. B Seek ways to make the company go forward. C Try hard to get loans to fund their operations. D Motivate the employees by raising the salaries. 2 According to Gordon Moore, when the recession ends, companies that didn’t innovate will ____ . A enjoy faster development with the money saved B set up more factories as consumer demand grows C be hindered by out-of-date products and services D attract more customers with traditional products 3 How do consumers change after the economic crisis? A They lose confidence in the market. B They start to live within their means. C They have different ways of spending. D They try to avoid unnecessary expenditure. 4 What’s Cesare Mainardi’s opinion about companies’ large-scale cuts? A They do no good to companies’ future development. B They help the companies out of the crisis quickly. C They are the only way to get the expected profits. D They force the employees to work much harder. 5 What can be the best title for this passage? A Recession Not as Bad as Expected B Ways to Save You Out of the Crisis C Financial Crisis Spreading the World D Innovation Needed Even in Recessions

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。 A Thomas Alva Edison was awarded more patents on inventions than any other American. When he died in 1931,Americans wondered how they could best show their respect for him.One suggestion was that the nation observe a minute or two of total blackout. All electric power would be shut off in homes, streets, and factories.Perhaps this suggested plan made Americans realize fully what Edison and his inventions mean to them.Electric power was too important to the country.Shutting it off for even a short time would have led to complete confusion.A blackout was out of the question. On the day of Edison’s funeral, many people silently dimmed their lights. In this way they honored the man who had done more than anyone else to put the great force of electricity at his countrymen’s fingertips. 56.This selection says that Thomas Edison ________. A.was the only important American inventor B.received the first American patent C.received more patents than any other American D.was the first American inventor 57.People decided to honor Edison when ______. A.he made the first electric light B.electric power was 100 years C.the country realized electricity’s importance D.he died in 1931 58.The suggested plan was to ________. A.turn off the lights in factories and schools B.observe a few minutes of total silence C.dim all electric lights D.shut off all electricity for a short time 59.Americans fully realized what Edison’s inventions meant when they ________. A.heard of his death B.heard of the plan to honor him C.first used electric power D.tried to carry out the plan B Kids will often ignore your requests for them to shut off the TV,start their chores(杂事),or do their homework as a way to avoid following your directions. Before you know it,you’ve started to sound like a broken record as you repeatedly ask them to do their assignments, clean their rooms,or take out the trash.Rather than saying ,“Do your chores now.”You’ll be more effective if you set a target time for when the chores have to be completed. So instead of arguing about starting chores, just say,“If chores aren’t done by 4 p.m.,here are the consequences.” Then it’s up to your child to complete the chores.Put the ball back in their court.Don’t argue or fight with them, just say,“That’s the way it’s going to be.” It shouldn’t be punitive(惩罚性的)as much as it should be persuasive.“If your chores aren’t done by 4 p.m.,then no video game time until chores are done. And if finishing those chores runs into homework time, that’s going to be your loss.”On the other hand, when dealing with homework, keep it very simple.Have a time when homework starts, and at that time, all electronics go off and do not go back on until you see that their homework is done.If your kids say they have no homework, then they should use that time to study or read.Either way, there should be a time set aside when the electronics are off. When a kid wears his iPod or headphones when you’re trying to talk to him, make no bones about it;he is not ignoring you,he is disrespecting you.At that point, everything else should stop until he takes the earplugs out of his ears.Don’t try to communicate with him when he’s wearing headphones—even if he tells you he can hear you.Wearing them while you’re talking to him is a sign of disrespect.Parents should be very tough about this kind of thing.Remember, mutual respect becomes more important as children mature. 60.According to the passage,it seldom happens that ________. A.kids turn a deaf ear to their parents’ requests B.parents’ directions sound like a broken record C.children are ready to follow their parents’ directions D.parents are unaware of what they are repeating to their kids 61.Parents will be able to deal with their children more effectively if they ________. A.avoid direct ways of punishment B.make them do things at their request C.argue and fight with their children D.allow their children to behave in their own way 62.When the kid is doing his homework, parents ________. A.should provide him with a good learning environment B.can do whatever they like C.can stay aside watching TV D.must switch off the power 63.It can be inferred from the passage that ________. A.parents should take off his headphones when trying to have a talk with their child B.it will make no difference that a kid is wearing his earplugs while talking to his parents C.parents shouldn’t give in to their kid when he shows no sign of respect D.kids’ purposely talking to their parents with iPod gives them a sense of power and control C Qiao is a sixth grader at Yuhui Primary School. He is only 12 years old but has been smoking for three years.Liu,15,is a Junior 2 student at Chicheng No.2 Middle School. He began smoking four years ago.“Smoking is part of my life,” Liu said.Qiao and Liu are not those boys’ real names. But their problem, smoking,is a very real problem. In many countries, smoking is becoming a bigger problem for young people. Most smokers start in their teens (years of a person’s age from 13 to 19) or earlier. A study of 8,000 Beijing students last May told us that smoking is a problem for many Chinese kids.More than 21% of middle school students and 6% of primary school pupils said they smoked. “If young people start smoking early, they will probably get addicted to nicotine. And it will be very hard to give up later on,” said a professor. Every year, about four million people die because of smoking. And if people keep smoking, that number will go up to about 10 million a year by 2030,the World Health Organization (WHO) says.So we have to learn and tell others about the dangers of smoking. 64.The sentence “Smoking is part of my life” probably means “________”. A.I don’t smoke very often B.Smoking is very important to me C.I don’t smoke at all D.I’m going to give up smoking 65.What will probably happen if a person starts smoking early? choose a paragraph more than once. Each paragraph is marked with a letter.Answer the questions by marking the corresponding letter on Answer Sheet 2.Can societies be rich and green?[A]“If our economies are to flourish,if global poverty is to be eliminated and if the well-being of the world’s people enhanced—not just in this generation but in succeeding generations—we must make sure we take care of the natural environment and resources on which our economic activity depends.”That statement comes not,as you might imagine, from a stereotypical tree-hugging,save-the-world greenie(环保主义者),but from GordonBrown,a politician with a reputation for rigour, thoroughness and above all, caution.[B]A surprising thing for the man who runs one of the world’s most powerful economies to say?Perhaps;though in the run-up to the five-year review of the Millennium(千年的)Goals,he is far from alone. The roots of his speech, given in March at the roundtable meeting of environment and energy ministers from the G20 group of nations, stretch back to 1972,and the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment in Stockholm.[C]“The protection and improvement of the human environment is a major issue which affects the well-being of peoples and economic development throughout the world,”read the final declaration from this gathering, the first ofa sequence which would lead to the Rio de Janeiro Earth Summit in 1992 and the World Development Summit in Johannesburg three years ago.[D]Hunt through the reports prepared by UN agencies and development groups—many for conferences such as this year’s Millennium Goals review—and you will find that the linkage between environmental protection and economic progress is a common thread.[E]Managing ecosystems sustainably is more profitable than exploiting them, according to the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment. But finding hard evidence to support the thesis is not so easy.Thoughts turn first to some sort of global statistic, some indicator which would rate the wealth of nations in both economic and environmental terms and show a relationship between thetwo.[F]If such an indicator exists,it is well hidden. And on reflection, this is not surprising;the single word“environment”has so many dimensions, and there are so many other factors affecting wealth—such as the oil deposits—that teasing out a simple economy-environment relationship would be almost impossible.[G]The Millennium Ecosystem Assessment,a vast four-year global study which reported its initial conclusions earlier this year, found reasons to believe that managing ecosystems sustainably—working with nature rather than against it—might be less profitable in the short term, but certainly brings long-term rewards.[H]And the World Resources Institute(WRI)in its World Resources 2005 report, issued at the end of August, produced several such examples from Africa and Asia;it also demonstrated that environmental degradation affects the poor more than the rich,as poorer people derive a much higher proportion of their income directly from the natural resources around them.[I]But there are also many examples of growing wealth by trashing the environment,in rich and poor parts of the world alike, whether through unregulated mineral extraction, drastic water use for agriculture,slash-and-burn farming,or fossil-fuel-guzzling(大量消耗)transport.Of course, such growth may not persist in the long term—which is what Mr.Brown and the Stockholm declaration were both attempting to point out.Perhaps the best example of boom growth and bust decline is the Grand Banks fishery. For almost five centuries a very large supply of cod(鳕鱼)provided abundant raw material for an industry which at its peak employed about 40,000 people, sustaining entire communities in Newfoundland. Then, abruptly, the cod population collapsed. There were no longer enough fish in the sea for the stock to maintain itself, let alone an industry.More than a decade later, there was no sign of the ecosystem re-building itself. It had, apparently, been fished out of existence;and the once mighty Newfoundland fleet now gropes about frantically for crab on the sea floor.[J]There is a view that modern humans are inevitably sowing the seed of a global Grand Banks-style disaster. The idea is that we are taking more out of what you might call the planet’s environmental bank balance than it can sustain;we are living beyond our ecological means. One recent study attempted to calculate the extent of this“ecological overshoot of the human economy”,and found that we are using 1.2 Earth’s-worth of environmental goods and services—the implication being that at some point the debt will be called in,and all those services—the things which the planet does for us for free—will grind to a halt.[K]Whether this is right, and if so where and when the ecological axe will fall,is hard to determine with any precision—which is why governments and financial institutions are only beginning to bring such risks into their economiccalculations. It is also the reason why development agencies are not united in their view of environmental issues;while some, like the WRI,maintain that environmental progress needs to go hand-in-hand with economic development, others argue that the priority is to build a thriving economy, and then use the wealth created to tackle environmental degradation.[L]This view assumes that rich societies will invest in environmental care. But is this right?Do things get better or worse as we get richer? Here the Stockholm declaration is ambiguous.“In the developing countries,”it says,“most of the environmental problems are caused by under-development.”So it is saying that economic development should make for a cleaner world? Not necessarily;“In the industralised countries, environmental problems are generally related to industrialisation and technological development,”it continues. In other words, poor and rich both over-exploit the natural world, but for different reasons. It’s simply not true that economic growth will surely make our world cleaner.[M]Clearly, richer societies are able to provide environmental improvements which lie well beyond the reach of poorer communities.Citizensof wealthy nations demand national parks, clean rivers, clean air and poison-free food. They also, however, use far more natural resources-fuel,water(all those baths and golf courses)and building materials.[N]A case can be made that rich nations export environmental problems, the most graphic example being climate change. As a country’s wealth grows,so do its greenhouse gas emissions. The figures available will notbe completely accurate.Measuring emissions is not a precise science, particularly when it comes to issues surrounding land use;not all nations have re-leased up-to-date data, and in any case, emissions from some sectors such as aviation are not included in national statistics. But the data is exact enough for a clear trend to be easily discernible. As countries become richer, they produce more greenhouse gases;and the impact of those gases will fall primarily in poor parts of the world.[O]Wealth is not,of course, the only factor involved. The average Norwegian is better off than the average US citizen, but contributes about half as much toclimate change. But could Norway keep its standard of living and yet cut its emissions to Moroccan or even Ethiopian levels? That question, repeated acrossa dozen environmental issues and across our diverse planet,is what will ultimately determine whether the human race is living beyond its ecological means as it pursues economic revival.

On that day his father took him to the Children's Activity Centre and said he could choose any course that interested him. There was just one requirement: Lin would have to promise to study it for at least one year.To that point Lin had had many hobbies, but none kept his interest for more than a week or two. His mum once gave him a bag of stamps to encourage stamp collecting. That hobby lasted a week. Then his father got him some paints hoping that Lin's artistic side would shine through. Those paints were now under his bed, still unopened. This time Lin's parents would let him decide.Lin's eyes moved down the notice board that listed all the courses on offer. He stopped at "Photography". He liked the idea of taking beautiful pictures but the notice said that each student needed their own camera. Although Lin's family weren't poor, they weren't rich either, and a camera cost a lot of money. He continued looking. The next course to catch his eyes was "Language Art". He didn't even know what that meant. His father explained that it taught people how to make public speeches. Lin, a shy boy, could think of nothing worse. Then he saw it. This goes against the notion most people hold that as we age, environmental influences gradually overpower the genetic legacy we are born with―and may have implications for education. “People assume the genetic influence goes down with age because the environmental differences between people pile up in life,” says Robert Plomin. “What we found was quite amazing, and goes in the other direction.” Previous studies have shown variations in intelligence are at least partly due to genetics. To find out whether this genetic contribution varies with age, Plomin’s team pooled data from six separate studies carried out in the US, the UK, Australia and the Netherlands, involving a total of 11,000 pairs of twins. In these studies, the researchers tested twins on reasoning, logic and arithmetic to measure a quantity called general cognitive ability, or “g”. Each study also included both identical twins, with same genes, and fraternal twins, sharing about half their genes, making it possible to disentangle (分清) the contributions of genes and environment to their “g” scores. Plomin’s team calculated that in childhood, genes account for about 41 percent of the variation in intelligence. In adolescence, this rose to 55 percent; by young adulthood, it was 66 percent. No one knows why the influence from genes should increase with age, but Plomin suggests that as children get older, they become better at exploiting and manipulating their environment to suit their genetic needs, and says “Kids with high ‘g’ will use their environment to foster their cognitive ability and choose friends who are like-minded.” Children with medium to low “g” may choose less challenging pastimes and activities, further emphasising their genetic legacy. Is there any way to interfere with the pattern? Perhaps. “The evidence of strong heritability doesn’t mean at all that there’s nothing you can do about it,” says Susanne Jaeggi. “From our own work, the ones that started off with lower IQ scores had higher gains after training.” Plomin suggests that genetic differences may be more emphasised if all children share an identical curriculum instead of it being tailored to children’s natural abilities. “My inclination (倾向) would be to give everyone a good education, but put more effort into the lower end,” he says. Intelligence researcher Paul Thompson agrees, “It shows that educators need to steer kids towards things drawing out their natural talents.” 1 Most people think the intelligence increases ____ . A are affected more by environment than the genetic legacy with age. B should be attributed more to the contribution that genes make with age. C are closely connected with the genetic legacy with age. D go against the implication of the education with age. 2 What information can we get from the previous studies about intelligence? A Genetic effect on intelligence goes down with age. B Cognitive ability grows with people aging. C Environment contributes more to one’s g scores. D Genetics in part leads to variations in intelligence. 3 What can be inferred from the calculation got by Plomin’s team? A The younger the people, the greater the role genes play in intelligence variations. B The genes play a greater and greater role in intelligence variations with age increasing. C The younger the people, the greater the variations in intelligence. D The older the people, the greater the variations in intelligence. 4 What can be known from the sixth paragraph? A The entertainment chosen by kids with low “g” may be less challenging. B Children want better environment to suit their genetic needs with age. C The older a child becomes, the better his cognitive ability is. D Kids with high cognitive ability stress genetic legacy more. 5 What does Susanne Jaeggi want to express by saying “the ones...lower IQ...after training”? A Children with lower IQ should be paid more attention to than those with high IQ scores. B Children with lower IQ can do nothing because of the evidence of strong heritability. C Children with medium to low “g” can chose challenging activities after training. D The medium or low “g” has close relationship with one’s IQ scores.

The Harry Potter series, written by J.K. Rowling, is perhaps the most popular set of novels of the modern era. With seven books and many successful films to its name, the series has gathered about 15 billion dollars in sales. How did the series become so popular? The reason can be broken down into several areas. The first book in the series was rejected 12 times before it was picked up by Bloomsbury—a small publisher in England. So receiving this contract was Rowling's first step to success. However, getting a book contract does not ensure the success of a book. The story was soon loved by children and adults alike. In light of this, Bloomsbury Publishing published a second version of the books with “adult” (less colorful and more boring) book covers. This made it easier for a full range of ages to enjoy the series.Another factor that worked like a charm was that the publisher and Rowling herself, through the books, conducted midnight releases, promotions, and pre-ordering more readers. Customers who feared that their local bookstore would run out of copies responded by pre-ordering over 700,000 copies before the July 8, 2000 release. What does the underlined word “releases” (Para. 3) mean?A. The activity that frees or expresses energy or emotion.B. The announcement about the book’s publishing information.C. The sales of books that is available only at midnight.

The increase in international business and in foreign investment has created a need for executives with knowledge of foreign languages and skills in cross-cultural communication. Americans, however, have not been well trained in either area and, consequently, have not enjoyed the same level of success in negotiation in an international arena as have their foreign counterparts. Negotiating is the process of communicating back and forth for the purpose of reaching an agreement. It involves persuasion and compromise, but in order to participate in either one, the negotiators must understand the ways in which people are persuaded and how compromise is reached within the culture of the negotiation. In many international business negotiations abroad, Americans are perceived as wealthy and impersonal. It often appears to the foreign negotiator that the American represents a large multi-million-dollar corporation that can afford to pay the price without bargaining further. The American negotiator’s role becomes that of an impersonal supplier of information and cash. In studies of American negotiators abroad, several traits have been identified that may serve to confirm this stereotypical perception, while undermining the negotiator’s position. Two traits in particular that cause cross-cultural misunderstanding are directness and impatience on the part of the American negotiator. Furthermore, American negotiators often insist on realizing short-term goals. Foreign negotiators, on the other hand, may value the relationship established between negotiators and may be willing to invest time in it for long-term benefits. In order to solidify the relationship, they may opt for indirect interactions without regard for the time involved in getting to know the other negotiator. Clearly, perceptions and differences in values affect the outcomes of negotiations and the success of negotiators. For Americans to play a more effective role in international business negotiations, they must put forth more effort to improve cross-cultural understanding. Americans experience more food recalls (召回) today than they did five years ago, especially when it comes to meat and poultry (家禽). Meat and poultry recalls increased by two-thirds from 2013 to 2018, while food recalls overall went up 10%, according to the report recently published by the U.S. Public Interest Research Group.Meanwhile, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates (估计) 48 million people get sick, 128,000 are hospitalized and 3,000 die from food-borne disease each year in the U.S. "We are looking for the farm-to-fork preventative solutions," said Adam Garber, the research group's consumer watchdog. "By doing that, we can protect people's health."Over the five-year period, poultry posted the most recalls (168), followed by beef (137) and pork (128). The report shows the most serious meat recalls are on the rise. Among meat and poultry, the number of Class I recalls has increased by 83%, nearly doubling. Class I, the most serious of the recalls, is issued when there is a reasonable probability that the food will cause health problems or death.53. When would Class I recalls be issued?A. When the food is likely to cause health problems or death.B. When there are too many complaints from customers.C. When the food problem lasts for five years.D.
