Americans are proud of their variety and individuality, yet they love and respect few things more than a uniform, whether it is the uniform of an elevator operator or the uniform of a five-star general. Why are uniforms so popular in the United States? Among the arguments for uniforms, one of the first is that in the eyes of most people they look more professional than civilian clothes. People have become conditioned to expect superior quality from a man who wears a uniform. The television repairman who wears a uniform tends to inspire more trust than one who appears in civilian clothes. Faith in the skill of a garage mechanic is increased by a uniform. What easier way is there for a nurse, a policeman, a barber, or a waiter to lose professional identity than to step out of uniform? Uniforms also have many practical benefits. They save on other clothes. They save on laundry bills. They are tax-deductible (可减税的). They are often more comfortable and more durable than civilian clothes. Primary among the arguments against uniforms is their lack of variety and the consequent loss of individuality experienced by people who must wear them. Though there are many types of uniforms, the wearer of any particular type is generally stuck with it, without change, until retirement. When people look alike, they tend to think, speak, and act similarly, on the job at least. Uniforms also give rise to some practical problems. Though they are long-lasting, often their initial expense is greater than the cost of civilian clothes. Some uniforms are also expensive to maintain, requiring professional dry cleaning rather than the home laundering possible with many types of civilian clothes. 1 What is surprising about Americans who worship variety and individuality? A They still judge a man by his clothes. B They hold the uniform in such high regard. C They enjoy having a professional identity. D They will respect an elevator operator as much as a general in uniform. 2 How are people accustomed to thinking about a man in uniform? A He is doing quality work. B He discards his social identity. C He appears to be more practical. D He looks superior to a person in civilian clothes. 3 What is the chief function of a uniform? A It provides practical benefits to the wearer. B It makes the wearer catch the public eye. C It inspires the wearer's confidence in himself. D It provides the wearer with a professional identity. 4 What can we learn about people wearing uniforms from the passage? A They are usually helpful. B They have little or no individual freedom. C They tend to lose their individuality. D They enjoy greater popularity. 5 What would be the best title for this passage? A Uniforms and Society. B The Importance of Wearing a Uniform. C Practical Benefits of Wearing a Uniform. D Advantages and Disadvantages of Uniforms.

阅读理解Some people have a very poor sense of direction. Unluckily, I am one of them. I have visited a place many times but I may still get lost there the next time. When I was a little girl, I never dared to ask strangers the way. And so I used to walk around in circles and hope that by chance I would get to the place I was going to.Now, I am no longer too shy to ask people for directions, but I often receive helpless or even wrong information. So I try to avoid giving people wrong directions. If anyone ever asks me the way to somewhere, I would say "sorry, I am a stranger here."Once on my way to work I was stopped by a man. He asked me if I could tell him the way to the Friendship Building. I gave him my usual reply. But just as I walked on only a few steps, I realized that he had asked the way to my office building. However, I had no time to turn back and look for him. I was rushing to meet with someone at my office and I didn't want to keep him waiting. When I just got to my office, the secretary(秘书)showed in the man who had asked me for directions. Imagine how embarrassed(尴尬的)I was and how surprised he was when we saw each other at the first sight!(1)The writer always refuses to give people directions because ________.A.she is a stranger to the cityB.she doesn't know the peopleC.she has no time to help othersD.she's afraid of giving wrong directions(2)A man stopped the writer on the way to ________.A.sell her something B.ask her the time C.make friends with her D.ask for the direction(3)Which of the following is TRUE according to the text?A.The writer is too shy to give others directions.B.The writer has a very poor sense of direction.C.The writer never got lost when she was young.D.The man was quite nervous when he saw the writer. We all know that the British people love their manners. They are part of their national identity(特性), as well as having fish and chips and complaining about the weather. Recently I read online that they said "sorry" up to eight times a day. After some research I have not been able to find any specific reasons why they are like this. I suppose, for centuries, manners, including how they behave at table and talk to other people have been one of the differences between the lower and upper classes and those manners show their social classes. Britain has traditionally been a quite conservative(保守的)country. There are many articles suggesting that their seemingly polite attitude of always saying "please" and "thank you" is quite false because it is impossible for a person to always feel that he or she wants to thank someone or say "please".Maybe it is for this reason that people are going one of two ways: they are too polite and hold back their feelings or they are not polite at all and express their true feelings directly. Some British people are tired of pretending that they are always happy and having to please others. But sometimes because they feel they have to be polite, they are prevented from saying what they truly think.(1)What don't the British people often do?A.Eat fish and chips.B.Have no quite good manners.C.Be polite to others.D.Talk about the weather.(2)What do the British people say up to eight times every day?A.Hello. B.Thank you. C.I don't know. D.Sorry.(3)What does the underlined word "pretending" mean in Chinese?A.打算 B.假装 C.想象 D.体验(4)What does the writer think are the reasons why the British people are so polite? ①The upper classes should have good manners. ②They have learned much about politeness at school. ③They like to hold back their true feelings. ④They are not honest at all.A.①② B.③④ C.①③ D.②④Parents used to be only parents many years ago. But in fact parents can be very important teachers in our lives. However, they are not always the best teachers. Parents may be too close to their children emotionally(感情上). Sometimes they can only see their children through the eyes of a protector. For example, a teacher might see a trip to a big city as a valuable experience. However, it might seem too dangerous to a parent.Another problem is that parents may expect their children's interests to be similar to their own. If they love science, they may try to force(强迫)their child to love science too. But what if(要是……又怎样)their child's true love is art, or writing, or car repair?Parents usually want to pass on their values to their children. But should children always believe what their parents do? When children are young, they believe that their parents are always right. But when they get older, they will have different ways of thinking. The most important thing to realize is that we all have many teachers in our lives. Our parents teach us, our teachers teach us, and our friends teach us. Books and newspapers and televisions also teach us. All of them are valuable.(1)Parents may hope that their children have the same ________ as their own, according to the text.A.looks B.interests C.habits D.jobs in the future(2)When children get older, they ________.A.don't believe their parents any moreB.Should always believe what their parents doC.believe that their parents are always rightD.begin to have their own ways of thinking(3)What is the best title of the text?A.Never Grow UpB.elieve Your Parents ForeverC.Are Parents Always the Best TeachersD.How Many Teachers Can We Have in Our LivesA trip to Seoul, South Korea(韩国)Day 1Our guide will meet you at Incheon International Airport(仁川国际机场)in the morning. You fell down, and then got back up. You laughed sometimes and cried at other times. After much practice, you finally learned how to balance yourself. You got much pleasure from this new feeling of power—you'd stand everywhere you could. It was a happy time—you did it!Now, the next step-walking. You'd seen others do it. It didn't look that hard—just move your legs while you were standing. Wrong-more difficult than you ever imagined. But after you tried again and again and again, you understood how to walk.If people found you walking, they cheered. "Oh, look at what the kid is doing." This encouraged you! But look back on those days when you were the little child—how many times did you try when no one was watching, or when no one was cheering? You couldn't wait for someone to encourage you to take the next steps. You learned how to encourage yourself. So, keep trying and encouraging yourself as you learned to walk if you want to succeed in doing something.(1)What is the first step in learning to walk?(不超过15个词)________(2)When did you understand how to walk?(不超过15个词)________(3)What should you do if you want to succeed in doing something?(不超过15个词)________

According to the World Wildlife Fund, people are currently using resources 25 percent faster than they can be replaced. If we continue down this course, we will need a second planet by the year 2050. Sustainable communities attempt to change that course by drastically altering how citizens interact with the environment. Alternatively known as green communities or ecovillages (生态村), sustainable communities vary in their approaches to sustainable living, or a way of life that meets the population’s basic needs in ways that can be continued indefinitely for future generations. Some communities focus solely on enriching the environment, while others also aim to improve social and economic conditions as well. Sustainable communities generally strive to minimize waste, reduce consumption and preserve open space. Ideally, they don’t use resources faster than they can be replenished, and they don’t produce waste faster than it can be assimilated back into the environment. Granted, some communities are more radical than others--living entirely off the grid and eschewing the use of government:--printed money--but the basic principles are similar. Designing the neighborhood to encourage walking or bicycling is one way sustainable communities put these first two principles into practice. Less driving means less gas and emissions. Many ecovillages also incorporate work space into homes or encourage telecommuting. They also might zone part of the development for commercial use, essentially making the community a serf-contained environment where residents don’t even have to leave for shopping or entertainment. This design sometimes is called a live- work-play lifestyle. Using green building techniques is another staple of sustainable communities. Here are a few examples: ・ Architects design buildings to take advantage of the sun’s lighting and heating capabilities. ・ They install energy-efficient appliances. ・ They try to use local sources of materials as much as possible to cut back on the environmental costs of transport. ・ They build with durable, non-toxic materials that have either been recycled or sustainably harvested. You might see straw bale (草捆) houses, which essentially use bales of straw as the structural building blocks; cob houses, which are a mix of straw, clay and sand or earthbag homes, which are exactly what they sound like, homes made out of bags of dirt. Along with green building techniques, sustainable communities rely on green gardening methods. They landscape with native, drought-tolerant plants and raise them organically to reduce water and keep pesticides and herbicides out of the environment. Many communities also set aside a significant portion of their land as open space. Serenbe, for example, reserves 80 percent of its 900 acres for green space, that is, 720 acres of rolling hills, woods and streams free of development, quite a contrast to the concrete-laden urban sprawl of Atlanta just 32 miles away. Another way sustainable communities reduce their ecological footprint is by capturing and recycling their wastes, often creating their own contained natural cycles. Instead of treating normally perceived waste products such as rainwater and sewage as pollution to be gotten rid of, residents mm them into resources. Sewage, for example, is turned into compost that fertilizes plants and increases soil productivity, while captured rainwater is cleansed through innovative filtering systems and reused for watering plants. More than 400 ecovillages exist in the world, according to the Global Ecovillage Network database. The following examples outline life in just two of these communities. Dancing Rabbit Ecovillage, Missouri. Dancing Rabbit Ecovillage is a developing 280-acre community in northeastern Missouri with far-reaching goals. It aims to be an entirely self-reliant town that practices "radical environmental sustainability’, according to the community’s website. The town’s founders hope to attract between 500 and 1 000 residents to create a diverse community more capable of providing for all of its own needs. Dancing Rabbit even has its own local currency to encourage local trading and sourcing of jobs. The ecovillage has established a set of six guidelines that may seem extreme to the lazy environ- mentalists among us, but should set the town well on its way towards achieving sustainability. 1. No vehicles are to be used or stored in the village. 2. Fossil fuels for cars, refrigeration, heating and cooling homes, as well heating domestic water aren’t allowed. 3. All gardening must be organic. 4. All power must come from renewable resources. 5. No lumber from outside the local area is allowed unless it is recycled or salvaged. 6. Organic waste and recyclable materials are to be reincorporated into usable products through composting methods. Long term, Dancing Rabbit citizens are trying to achieve negative population growth. If they want the current 50 or so residents to become 500 or I 000, they may want to rethink that last guideline. Los Angeles Ecovillage, California. You might think sustainable communities have to be set in the country, but that’s not true. Located just three miles west of downtown Los Angeles, the Los Angeles Ecovillage (LAEV) is a community of 500 residents seeking to have minimal impact on the environment while also providing a fulfilling way of life. The urban location near public transit, schools, churches, commercial services and industry helps residents drive less, while the dozens of gardens and fruit trees provide a local source of food. LAEV takes a whole-systems approach to sustainability, meaning that residents strive to balance’ the social, economic and environmental needs of the community. Here, clean water and air rank up there with close-knit relationships, ethnic diversity and affordable housing. Citizens have saved 20 tons of brick from the landfill to use in construction projects, composted over 100 cubic yards of yard waste and held countless weekly potluck dinners to establish and strengthen relationships. Who knew that sustainability could be possible even in one of the largest, most polluted cities in the United States Residents of the two sustainable communities we just discussed deliberately placed sustainability at the top of their agenda. But communities spring up for lots of reasons not related to the environment, and sometimes the Earth benefits. Before "green" was the new buzzword and sustainability was cool, Old Order Amish communities were quietly co-existing with the planet since the early 18th century. While members of this religious group didn’t consciously develop their way of life to help the environment, their simple farm-based living doesn’t hurt it. The Amish use horses to power their farm equipment and to get around. Their homes have no electricity; instead, they use lanterns (灯笼) for light. In stark contrast to the rampant consumerism visible in many countries, the Amish do not own things they don’t need. They wear simple clothes, and their houses are sparsely furnished. Amish communities didn’t have to "return to the earth" to achieve their brand of sustainability. They were there all along. Cohousing developments offer another example of a living arrangement that unwittingly(未觉察地) practices sustainability. These developments typically are designed to encourage and strengthen social relationships, rather than to tread lightly on the environment, but, as it turns out, the two often go hand in hand. Although residents in a cohousing development enjoy the privacy of their own homes, they share a common building and other resources. Sharing major appliances like washing machines, power tools and heavy exercise equipment forces you to interact with your neighbors while reducing resource use. In addition, it allows individual houses to be smaller, which, along with the clustered arrangement of homes, preserves land. People who own cars (some people share cars) park them on the sides of the neighborhood to create a pedestrian friendly environment safe for children. Several times a week, residents may also eat a shared meal in the common building to strengthen ties. Cooking for many on one stove is much more energy efficient than cooking for 20 on separate stoves. What will happen in the middle of the 21st century, if we consume resources much faster than their replacement A.We can have another planet called the Earth.B.We will use up resources on Earth.C.We will work out replaceable resources.D.We will migrate to another planet to live.

I have only once been in trouble with the law. The whole process of being arrested and taken to court was a rather unpleasant experience at the time, but it makes a good story now. What makes it rather disturbing was the arbitrary circumstances both of my arrest and my subsequent fate in court. It happened in February about twelve years ago. I had left school a couple of months before that and was not due to go to university until the following October. I was still living at home at the time. One morning I was in Richmond, a suburb of London near where I lived. I was looking for a temporary job so that I could save up some money to go traveling. As it was a fine day and I was in no hurry, I was taking my time, looking in shop windows, strolling in the park, and sometimes just stopping and looking around me. It must have been this obvious aimlessness that led to my downfall. It was about half past eleven when it happened. I was just walking out of the local library, having unsuccessfully sought employment there, when I saw a man walking across the road with the obvious intention of talking to me. I thought he was going to ask me the time. Instead, he said he was a police officer and he was arresting me. At first I thought it was some kind of joke. But then another policeman appeared, this time in uniform, and I was left in no doubt. "But what for?" I asked. "Wandering with intent to commit an arrestable offence." he said. "What offence?" I asked. "Theft." he said. "Theft of what?" I asked. "Milk bottles," he said, and with a perfectly straight face too! "Oh," I said. It turned out there had been a lot of petty thefts in the area, particularly that of stealing milk bottles from doorsteps. Then I made my big mistake. At the time I was nineteen, had long untidy hair, and regarded myself as part of the sixties' "youth counterculture". As a result, I wanted to appear cool and unconcerned with the incident, so I said, "How long have you been following me?" in the most casual and conversational tone I could manage. I thus appeared to them to be quite familiar with this sort of situation, and it confirmed them in their belief that I was a thoroughly disreputable(品行不端的)character. A few minutes later a police car arrived. "Get in the back," they said. "Put your hands on the back of the front seat and don't move them." They got in on either side of me. It wasn't funny any more. At the police station they questioned me for several hours. I continued to try to look worldly and familiar with the situation. When they asked me what I had been doing, I told them I'd been looking for a job. "Aha," I could see them thinking, "unemployed". Eventually, I was officially charged and told to report to Richmond Magistrates' Court the following Monday. Then they let me go. I wanted to conduct my own defense in court, but as soon as my father found out what had happened, he hired a very good lawyer. We went along that Monday armed with all kinds of witnesses, including my English teacher from school as a character witness. But he was never called on to give evidence. My "trial" didn't get that far. The magistrate dismissed the case after fifteen minutes. I was free. The poor police had never stood a chance. The lawyer even succeeded in getting costs awarded against the police. And so I do not have a criminal record. But what was most shocking at the time was the things my release from the charge so clearly depended on. I had the "right" accent, respectable middle-class parents in court, reliable witnesses, and I could obviously afford a very good lawyer. Given the obscure nature of the charge, I feel sure that if I had come from a different background, and had really been unemployed, there is every chance that I would have been found guilty. While asking for costs to be awarded, my lawyer's case quite obviously revolved(回转)around the fact that I had a "brilliant academic record". Meanwhile, just outside the courtroom, one of the policemen who had arrested me was gloomily complaining to my mother that another youngster had been turned against the police. "You could have been a bit more helpful when we arrested you," he said to me reproachfully(责备地). What did he mean? Probably that I should have looked outraged (暴怒) and said something like, "Look here, do you know who you're talking to? I am a highly successful student with a brilliant academic record. How dare you arrest me!" Then they, probably, would have apologized perhaps even taken off their caps, and let me on my way.(1)Judging from the first paragraph, the writer's attitude towards his story is ____ .A. angryB. sadC. amusedD. more than just one the above(2)The first man who came up to him was ____ .A. a uniformed policemanB. a policeman in plainclothesC. not a policemanD. a good joker(3)The court never asked the author's English teacher to give evidence because ____ .A. the time for the trial was limited to fifteen minutes onlyB. the author wanted to conduct his own defense in courtC. the case was dismissed before the trial reached that stageD. he was found to be unqualified as a character witness(4)The author believes that he would most probably have been declared guilty if ____ .A. the magistrate had been less gentleB. he had really been out of workC. he had been born in a lower-class familyD. both B and C(5)In the opinion of one of the policeman who had arrested the author, the whole thing might not have occurred if ____ .A. he had protested strongly at the timeB. he had begged to be allowed to go homeC. he hadn't wandered aimlesslyD. he had tried to look cool(6)We can see from the passage that the author ____ .A. has broken the law only onceB. has never broken the lawC. has broken the law on more than one occasionD. once broke the law without knowing it

  • The increase in international business and in foreign investment has created a need for executives with knowledge of foreign languages and skills in cross-cultural communication. Americans, however, have not been well trained in either area and, consequently, have not enjoyed the same level of success in negotiation in an international arena as have their foreign counterparts. Negotiating is the process of communicating back and forth for the purpose of reaching an agreement. It involves persuasion and compromise, but in order to participate in either one, the negotiators must understand the ways in which people are persuaded and how compromise is reached within the culture of the negotiation. In many international business negotiations abroad, Americans are perceived as wealthy and impersonal. It often appears to the foreign negotiator that the American represents a large multi-million-dollar corporation that can afford to pay the price without bargaining further. The American negotiator’s role becomes that of an impersonal supplier of information and cash. In studies of American negotiators abroad, several traits have been identified that may serve to confirm this stereotypical perception, while undermining the negotiator’s position. Two traits in particular that cause cross-cultural misunderstanding are directness and impatience on the part of the American negotiator. Furthermore, American negotiators often insist on realizing short-term goals. Foreign negotiators, on the other hand, may value the relationship established between negotiators and may be willing to invest time in it for long-term benefits. In order to solidify the relationship, they may opt for indirect interactions without regard for the time involved in getting to know the other negotiator. Clearly, perceptions and differences in values affect the outcomes of negotiations and the success of negotiators. For Americans to play a more effective role in international business negotiations, they must put forth more effort to improve cross-cultural understanding. • The Harry Potter series, written by J.K. Rowling, is perhaps the most popular set of novels of the modern era. With seven books and many successful films to its name, the series has gathered about 15 billion dollars in sales. How did the series become so popular? The reason can be broken down into several areas. The first book in the series was rejected 12 times before it was picked up by Bloomsbury—a small publisher in England. So receiving this contract was Rowling's first step to success. However, getting a book contract does not ensure the success of a book. The story was soon loved by children and adults alike. In light of this, Bloomsbury Publishing published a second version of the books with “adult” (less colorful and more boring) book covers. This made it easier for a full range of ages to enjoy the series.Another factor that worked like a charm was that the publisher and Rowling herself, through the books, conducted midnight releases, promotions, and pre-ordering more readers. Customers who feared that their local bookstore would run out of copies responded by pre-ordering over 700,000 copies before the July 8, 2000 release. What does the underlined word “releases” (Para. 3) mean?A. The activity that frees or expresses energy or emotion.B. The announcement about the book’s publishing information.C. The sales of books that is available only at midnight.
