Directions:There are 2 passages in this section. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A),B),C) and D). You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on Answer Sheet 2 with a single line through the centre. Passage One Questions 46 to 50 are based on the following passage. The weakening of the human connection to nature might be good for economic growth but is bad for people.A tipping point was reached in 2020 when human-made materials-such as steel, concrete and plastic- were found to weigh more than all life on Earth. Continuing to grow concrete forests rather than real ones is shortsighted. Simply being in the nearest wood has such health benefits that the Woodland Trust successfully lobbied for it to be prescribed by doctors. Yet slipping from popular culture is the wonder and beauty of the natural world. For every three nature- related words in hit songs of the 1950s, researchers found, there was only slightly more than one 50 years later. It is not a moment too soon that teenagers will be able to take a natural history test, given that for decades children have been able to name more video game characters than wildlife species. Part of remedying this social disease would be for parliament to pass a"right to grow"law, allowing anyone to turn underused public spaces into vegetable and fruit gardens. The idea is for people to get back in touch with the soil——while producing food sustainably. Vegetable planting has a respectable tradition. In April 1649, locals responded to high prices and food shortages by cultivating vegetables on common land in Southern England. The practice of throwing seed bombs to turn vacant plots of land green took offin 1970s New York, and has been revived(使复活) by green-thumbed (有因艺才能的) social media influencers who defy local US regulations in a war on ugly spots in cities. Apart from the urgent task of providing more healthy nutrients to those who increasingly can't afford them, publicly accessible fruit and vegetable gardens connect what we eat to where it comes from-the means of production, if you will. They can make unlovely spaces lovely, and marry use and beauty as well as help promote a sense of community. Plants are also, of course, our first defence against species loss and climate change. Such planting is a small step for humanity-in the right direction. 46. What does the author want to emphasise in the first paragraph? A) The year 2020 was a big turning point in human history. B) Economic growth benefits people little in the long run. C) It is unwise to weaken the human connection to nature. D) It is harmful to mankind to use human-made materials. 47. What did researchers find about popular culture? A) It is increasingly detached from the natural world. B) It is filled with all kinds of video game characters. C) It is especially appealing to the taste of teenagers. D) It is still impacted by the hit songs of the 1950s. 48. What does the author propose people do? A) Take measures to ensure sustainable food development. B) Reconnect with nature through the right to grow. C) Stand by the parliament in fighting social diseases. D) Cover public spaces with fruit trees and vegetable plants. 49. What do we learn from the passage about vegetable planting? A) It all started in 1649 in Southern England. B) It is protected by US government regulations. C) It has long been used to increase food supply and improve urban landscape. D) It has been popularised worldwide with the increasing influence of social media. 50. What can publicly accessible fruit and vegetable gardens do apart from their practical functions? A) Raise people's environmental awareness. C) Act as the first defence against natural disasters. B) Add to the great variety of plant species. D) Enhance people's community spirit.
A number of studies have looked at how family life can affect productivity and satisfaction in the workplace. However, there has been_26_little research on the influence of leisure activities. So Ciara Kelly and colleagues recruited 129 hobbyists to look at how the time spent on their hobbies_27_their work life. The researchers found that when participants spent longer than_28_on their leisure activity, their belief in their ability to perform their job was strengthened. But this was only the_29_when they had a serious hobby that was dissimilar to their job, or when their hobby was similar to their work but they only did it_30_.When their hobby was both serious and similar to their job, then spending more time on it actually decreased their work_31_ .Why might that be? To maintain a serious hobby, people need to invest significant psychological resources, say the authors—so if the activity has the same kinds of demands as their work, they may be left_32_and unable to perform well at their job.But if their hobby is quite different from their career, it may not_33_in the same way but instead help them develop other knowledge and skills that can 34 their confidence at work.“Consider a scientist who is a keen rock climber," says Kelly."Since climbing is so far 35 from their day-to-day work activities, they can still recover from the demands of their job with plenty of resources."问句1问句2问句3问句4问句5问句6问句7问句8问句9问句10A. boostB. caseC. casuallyD. estateE. estateF. exhaustedG. facultyH、interfereI、normalJ、prevalentK、relativeL、removedM、scratchN、shapedO、surprisingly
六、Part III Reading Comprehension (40 minutes) (总题数:1,分数:35.50)Questions 36 to 45 are based on the following passage. Children are natural-born scientists. They have __36__ minds, and they aren't afraid to admit they don't know something. Most of them, __37__. lose this as they got older. They become self-conscious and don't want to appear stupid. Instead of finding things out for themselves they make __38__ that often turn to be wrong. So it's not a case of getting kids interested in science. You just have to avoid killing the __39__ for learning that they were born with. It's no coincidence that kids start deserting science once it becomes formalised. Children naturally have a blurred approach to __40__ knowledge. They see learning about science or biology or cooking as all part of the same act—it's all learning. It's only because of the practicalities of education that you have to start breaking down the curriculum into specialist subjects. You need to have specialist teachers who __41__ what they know. Thus once they enter school, children begin to define subjects and erect boundaries that needn't other-wise exist. Dividing subjects into science, maths, English, etc. is something we do for __42__. In the end it's all learning, but many children today __43__ themselves from a scientific education. They think science is for scientists, not for them. Of course we need to specialise __44__. Each of us has only so much time on Earth, so we can't study everything. At 5 years old, our field of knowledge and __45__ is broad, covering anything from learning to walk to learning to count. Gradually it narrows down so that by the time we are 45, it might be one tiny little comer within science. Hate Your Job Here’s How to Reshape It Once upon a time, if you hated your job, you either quit or bit your lip. These days, a group of researchers is trumpeting a third option: shape your job so it’s more fruitful than futile. "We often get trapped into thinking about our job as a list of things to do and a list of responsibilities," says Amy Wrzesniewski, an associate professor at the Yale School of Management. "But what if you set aside that mind-set " If you could adjust what you do, she says, "who would you start talking to, what other tasks would you take on, and who would you work with " To make livelihoods more lively, Wrzesniewski and her colleagues Jane Dutton and Justin Berg have developed a methodology they call job-crafting. They’re working with Fortune 500 companies, smaller firms and business schools to change the way Americans think about work. The idea is to make all jobs―even mundane (平凡的) ones―more meaningful by empowering employees to brainstorm and implement subtle but significant workplace adjustments.Step 1: Rethink Your Job―Creatively "The default some people wake up to is dragging themselves to work and facing a list of things they have to do," says Wrzesniewski. So in the job-crafting process, the first step is to think about your job holistically. You first analyze how much time, energy and attention you devote to your various tasks. Then you reflect on that allocation(分配). See 10 perfect jobs for the recession―and after. Take, for example, a maintenance technician at Burt’s Bees, which makes personal-care products. He was interested in process engineering, though that wasn’t part of his job description. To alter the scope of his day-to-day activities, the technician asked a supervisor if he could spend some time studying an idea he had for making the firm’s manufacturing procedures more energy-efficient. His ideas proved helpful, and now process engineering is part of the scope of his work. Barbara Fredrickson, author of Positivity and a professor of psychology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, says it’s crucial for people to pay attention to their workday emotions. "Doing so," she says, "will help you discover which aspects of your work are most life-giving--and most life-aining." Many of us get stuck in n,,ts (惯例). Berg, a Ph.D. student at the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania who helped develop the job-crafting methodology, says we all benefit from periodically rethinking what we do. "Even in the most constraining jobs, people have a certain amount of wiggle room," he says. "Small changes can have a real impact on life at work."Step 2: Diagram Your Day To lay the groundwork for change, job-crafting participants assemble diagrams detailing their workday activities. The first objective is to develop new insights about what you actually do at work. Then you can dream up fresh ways to integrate what the job-crafting exercise calls your "strengths, motives and passions" into your daily routine. You convert task lists into flexible building blocks. The end result is an "after" diagram that can serve as a map for specific changes. Ina Lockau-Vogel, a management consultant who participated in a recent job-crafting workshop, says the exercise helped her adjust her priorities. "Before, I would spend so much time reacting to requests and focusing on urgent tasks that I never had time to address the real important issues." As part of the job-crafting process, she decided on a strategy for delegating and outsourcing (外包) more of her administrative responsibilities. In contrast to business books that counsel managers to influence workers through incentives, job-crafting focuses on what employees themselves can do to re-envision and adjust what they do every day. Given that according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, it now takes the average job seeker more than six months to find a new position, it’s crucial to make the most of the job you’ve got.Step 3: Identify Job Loves and Hates By reorienting (使适应) how you think about your job, you free yourself up for new ideas about how to restructure your workday time and energy. Take an IT worker who hates dealing with technologically incompetent callers. He might enjoy teaching more than customer service. By spending more time instructing colleagues―and treating help-line callers as curious students of tech―the disgruntled IT person can make the most of his 9-to-5 position. Dutton, a professor at the University of Michigan’s Ross School of Business, says she has seen local auto-industry workers benefit from the job-crafting process. "They come in looking worn down, but after spending two hours on this exercise, they come away thinking about three or four things they can do differently." "They start to recognize they have more control over their work than they realized," says Dutton, who partnered with Wrzesniewski on the original job-crafting research.Step4: Put Your Ideas into Action To conclude the job-crafting process, participants list specific follow-up steps. Many plan a one-on-one meeting with a supervisor to propose new project ideas. Others connect with colleagues to talk about trading certain tasks. Berg says as long as their goals are met, many managers are happy to let employees adjust how they work. Job-crafting isn’t about revenue, per se, but juicing up (活跃) employee engagement may end up beefing up the bottom line. A mid salary, job and benefit cuts, more and more workers are disgruntled. Surveys show that more than 50% aren’t happy with what they do. Dutton, Berg and Wrzesniewski argue that emphasizing enjoyment can boost efficiency by lowering turnqver rates and jacking up productivity. Job-crafting won’t rid you of a lousy boss or a subpar salary, but it does offer some remedies for job dissatisfaction. If you can’t ditch or switch a job, at least make it more likable.A long time ago when a person hated his/her job, what would he/she do A.Resign or bear it.B.Argue with the boss.C.Do it well or quit.D.Complain every day.

Truth be told, a life-changing college experience doesn't begin or end with a high GPA or great university tour. And although parents and teachers alike work diligently to prep their students with the cutting-edge classes and impressive transcripts, they're forgetting one vital skill: emotional intelligence.A poll of 1,502 first-year college students in the US found that a majority of them wish they had received more emotional preparation for college. The pollsters defined emotional preparedness as "the ability to take care of oneself, adapt to new environments, control negative emotions or behavior and build positive relationships," according to the survey."Survey data indicate that college readiness requires far more than just a solid academic foundation – a finding that seems counter to conventional higher education preparation," said John MacPhee, Executive Director of the JED Foundation, which co-sponsored (赞助,发起) the survey. "It is clear that emotional preparedness should be better integrated into the work that high school communities are doing to guide students through the transition into college."Data shows that college students worry about far more than their academics – and their stress can take a serious toll (影响) on their performance in school. 40 percent of survey participants felt pressure to pay for college expenses, followed by 30 percent who said making new friends was their biggest challenge. Keeping in touch with family and friends not at their college (28 percent) and being independent (16 percent) also weighed heavily on college students' shoulders. All of these pressures had a negative impact inside and outside of the classroom. Students who felt less emotionally prepared for college were more likely to have a lower grade point average, regularly consume drugs and / or alcohol, and rate their overall college experience as terrible or poor.Thankfully, whether your child is packing up for school this fall or still in diapers (尿布), it's never too late (or too early!) to begin prepping them for university life(1) (单选题)Which of the following is NOT mentioned in Paragraph 2 as the definition of emotional preparedness by pollsters?A.Creating strong and powerful relationships.B.Forming a person's character.C.Learning to grow in a brand-new environment.D.ealing with unpleasant feeling.(2) (单选题)The underlined word "conventional" in Paragraph 3 is closest in meaning to ______.A.convenientB.carefulC.conservativeD.traditional(3) (单选题)According to Paragraph 4, which of the following has the biggest influence on students's performance in school?A.To be financially independent.B.To learn how to make decisions by themselves.C.To be mature and stand on their own feet.D.To start new friendships.(4) (单选题)Which of the following CANNOT be inferred for the fully emotionally prepared students?A.They tend to achieve higher academic results.B.They seldom abuse drugs and drinks.C.They will be more adaptable and competitive in future workplace.D.They are more likely to have higher satisfaction about college life(5) (单选题)What is the main idea of the passage?A.How to communicate well with college-bound students.B.How to study in the college without parents' guide.C.How to enjoy exciting and liberating college life.D.How to help students adapt to university mentally.

阅读单选We see robots in our everyday life. They play us music, help us do housework and stay with us when we are alone. Now they can help us even more. Singapore is trying a new way to get people stay away from each other. People in Singapore now see a yellow and black robot "dog" called Spot in the parks. Boston Dynamics, a US company, designed the robot. It has a camera to scan(扫描)the environment, so it knows how many people are in the park. The dog goes around the park and plays a pre-recorded message, telling visitors to stay away from each other. There are many videos about Spot online. It can climb up stairs, dance to music, go through difficult areas and even open doors. The robot dog now works in only some of the parks in Singapore, but this is about to change. He was very strong—stronger than any other man in the village. People were scared of him because he often bullied(欺负)villagers. At that time, a man-eating tiger and a deepwater monster(怪物) lived nearby. They often caused trouble for the village. People called them, along with Zhou, the "three evils"(三害). One day, some villagers asked Zhou to help them kill the tiger and the monster. After three days of fighting, Zhou finally killed them and came back. But the villagers thought he was dead. They celebrated his death. After seeing this, Zhou realized how much he was hated and decided to make a change. He visited a famous scholar(学者)named Lu Yim. Lu told him, If one realized what is good in the morning, he can change his behavior in the evening. Just do what you think is right." From then on, Zhou became a good person and stopped bullying others. Later he became a great soldier(战士)and died protecting his country. Zhou Chu is a great example of the Chinese saying: "A prodigal who returns is more precious than gold." We all make mistakes. But it's never too late to correct them. On the other hand, we should also be more tolerant(宽容的)of those who sometimes make mistakes. Maybe they've made mistakes in the past, but they can do great things as long as they return to the right road.(1)According to the passage, who were the three evils?A.The man-eating tiger, the deepwater monster and Zhou Chu.B.The villagers, the man-eating tiger and the deepwater monster.C.The man-eating tiger, the deepwater monster and the enemies.D.Some villagers, the famous scholar and the deepwater monster.(2)What's the right order of the story? ①Zhou decided to be a good person. ②Zhou killed the tiger and the monster. ③The villagers thought Zhou was dead and celebrated his death. ④Zhou Chu often bullied villagers. ⑤Zhou became a great soldier and died for his country.A.②③④①⑤ B.②③①④⑤ C.④②③①⑤ D.④③②①⑤(3)The Chinese of the underlined sentence "A prodigal who returns is more precious than gold." is ________.A.一心不能二用 B.浪子回头金不换 C.一失足成千古恨 D.玉不琢,不成器(4)Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?A.Zhou Chu was the strongest person in his village.B.It's never too late for everyone to correct his mistakes.C.The villagers were afraid of Zhou Chu because of his looks.D.Zhou Chu learned a good lesson from the villagers and Lu Yun.“Da-da-da daaaaah! ” These four notes are strong and full of power(力量). Even if you don't know Ludwig van Beethoven(1770-1827), you have probably heard these notes before. This year is the 250th anniversary(周年)of Beethoven's birth. Born in Germany, he is one of the greatest musicians in history. The four opening notes above comes from his Symphony No.5(第五交响乐, also known as Fate(命运交响乐). Like this symphony, many of Beethoven’s works are rich in emotion(情感). They probably came from his hard life. He started to lose his hearing in his 20s. But he chose to face this pain and turn his feelings into music. In Symphony No.5, for example, you can hear anger and grief(悲痛)in the powerful notes. But as the music goes on, it sounds like a man who is moving from darkness into light. In the end, when the strings(弦乐)and drums play together, you know that the man has beaten fate. “I will seize(扼住)fate by the throat; it shall certainly never wholly overcome(战胜)me,” Beethoven once wrote. This spirit of his music will never stop giving people strength. Ludwig van Beethoven died on March 26, 1827 at the age of 56. About 20,000 people went to his funeral(葬礼)in Vienna, Austria in 1827. There are more than twice as many high-speed trains in China as the rest of the world. Cities like Beijing have several hundred high-speed trains stopping at the city every day, much more than any other big cities abroad. And every year when the Chinese Spring Festival comes, about 3 billion(十亿) trips take place within 2 weeks. It would be the same as every American taking 10 trips during Christmas, or every European taking 5 trips during Christmas. All the train tickets are gone within 10 seconds once they can be bought online. The high-speed trains are really great. Firstly, China 5s technology on building the railway is leading the rest of the world and there is no sign that any other country could go beyond China in near future. Secondly, China's trains are based on Japanese, German and French models. At last, the scale of Chinese high-speed train is unthinkable to other countries, which has high-speed train network(网络). I had my first chance to ride the high-speed trains last week when I had a business meeting in Zhengzhou. The train was amazing. It is clean and the seats are huge. You can't even feel how fast the train is moving. If there were no windows, I wouldn't be able to tell when we were stopped or when we were traveling at 300 km/h. I had traveled on an Amtrak train before in the US, and hated how slow it was and how many stops there were. Chinese high-speed trains are of great difference. Americans experience more food recalls (召回) today than they did five years ago, especially when it comes to meat and poultry (家禽). Meat and poultry recalls increased by two-thirds from 2013 to 2018, while food recalls overall went up 10%, according to the report recently published by the U.S. Public Interest Research Group.Meanwhile, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates (估计) 48 million people get sick, 128,000 are hospitalized and 3,000 die from food-borne disease each year in the U.S. "We are looking for the farm-to-fork preventative solutions," said Adam Garber, the research group's consumer watchdog. "By doing that, we can protect people's health."Over the five-year period, poultry posted the most recalls (168), followed by beef (137) and pork (128). The report shows the most serious meat recalls are on the rise. Among meat and poultry, the number of Class I recalls has increased by 83%, nearly doubling. Class I, the most serious of the recalls, is issued when there is a reasonable probability that the food will cause health problems or death.53. When would Class I recalls be issued?A. The increase in international business and in foreign investment has created a need for executives with knowledge of foreign languages and skills in cross-cultural communication. Americans, however, have not been well trained in either area and, consequently, have not enjoyed the same level of success in negotiation in an international arena as have their foreign counterparts. Negotiating is the process of communicating back and forth for the purpose of reaching an agreement. It involves persuasion and compromise, but in order to participate in either one, the negotiators must understand the ways in which people are persuaded and how compromise is reached within the culture of the negotiation. In many international business negotiations abroad, Americans are perceived as wealthy and impersonal. It often appears to the foreign negotiator that the American represents a large multi-million-dollar corporation that can afford to pay the price without bargaining further. The American negotiator’s role becomes that of an impersonal supplier of information and cash. In studies of American negotiators abroad, several traits have been identified that may serve to confirm this stereotypical perception, while undermining the negotiator’s position. Two traits in particular that cause cross-cultural misunderstanding are directness and impatience on the part of the American negotiator. Furthermore, American negotiators often insist on realizing short-term goals. Foreign negotiators, on the other hand, may value the relationship established between negotiators and may be willing to invest time in it for long-term benefits. In order to solidify the relationship, they may opt for indirect interactions without regard for the time involved in getting to know the other negotiator. Clearly, perceptions and differences in values affect the outcomes of negotiations and the success of negotiators. For Americans to play a more effective role in international business negotiations, they must put forth more effort to improve cross-cultural understanding. The Harry Potter series, written by J.K. Rowling, is perhaps the most popular set of novels of the modern era. With seven books and many successful films to its name, the series has gathered about 15 billion dollars in sales. How did the series become so popular? The reason can be broken down into several areas. The first book in the series was rejected 12 times before it was picked up by Bloomsbury—a small publisher in England. So receiving this contract was Rowling's first step to success. However, getting a book contract does not ensure the success of a book. The story was soon loved by children and adults alike. In light of this, Bloomsbury Publishing published a second version of the books with “adult” (less colorful and more boring) book covers. This made it easier for a full range of ages to enjoy the series.Another factor that worked like a charm was that the publisher and Rowling herself, through the books, conducted midnight releases, promotions, and pre-ordering more readers. Customers who feared that their local bookstore would run out of copies responded by pre-ordering over 700,000 copies before the July 8, 2000 release. What does the underlined word “releases” (Para. 3) mean?A. The activity that frees or expresses energy or emotion.B. The announcement about the book’s publishing information.C. The sales of books that is available only at midnight.
