There’s one fruit that can help feed hungry people who live in warm and wet areas in the world. It’s called a breadfruit, but it doesn’t look like bread. It’s a round green fruit with an unsmooth skin on the outside. When it’s ready to eat, the skin looks a little yellow and brown. It doesn’t have much taste, and most people say it’s a lot like a potato. The breadfruit is a good source of food because one tree can produce around 250 fruits each year. The tree is also easy to take care of. But the biggest reason why breadfruit may be the answer to feeding poor people is the healthy ingredients that this fruit provides. It may be a fruit, but it has a lot of healthy ingredients like meat, which is important especially in poor countries where people can’t afford meat. The biggest problem may be for the people to accept this fruit as part of their cultural diet.1.What do we learn about breadfruit?A) It has a lot of flavor and is a lot like a tomato.B) It is round and green with a smooth skin outside.C) It helps feed hungry people in warm and wet areas.D) It can produce around 250 fruits only in fall and spring.2.Why is breadfruit good for feeding poor people?A) For the fact that poor people can’t afford fruit.B) For the healthy ingredients this fruit provides.C) For the good price this food costs in the market.D) For the good taste poor people are unlikely to get.

Read the following passages and give the best answers to each question with the information you give have got from the passage. (20 points)Passage 1 In the 1960s, medical researchers Thomas Holmes and Richard Rahe developed a checklist of stressful events. They appreciated the tricky point that any major change can be stressful. Negative events like “serious illness of a family member” were high on the list, but so were some positive life-changing events, like marriage. When you take the Thomas Holmes test you must remember that the score does not reflect how you deal with stress----it only shows how much you have to deal with. And we now know that the way you handle these events dramatically affects your chances of staying healthy. By the early 1970s, hundreds of similar studies had followed Holmes and Rahe. And millions of Americans who worked and lived under stress worried over reports. Somehow, the research got boiled down to a memorable message. Women’s magazine’s ran headlines like “stress causes illness.” If you want to stay physically and mentally healthy, the articles said, avoid stressful events. But such simplistic advice is impossible to follow. Even if stressful events are dangerous, many-like the death of a loved one---are impossible to avoid. Moreover, any warning to avoid all stressful events is prescription(处方)? for staying away from opportunities as well as trouble. Since any change can be stressful, a person who wanted to be completely free of stress would never marry, have a child, take a new job or move. The notion that all stress makes you sick also ignores a lot of what about people. It assumes we’re vulnerable(脆弱的) and passive in the face of adversity(逆境). But what about human initiative and creativity? Many come through periods of stress with more physical and mental vigor than they had before. We also know that long time without change or challenge can lead to boredom, and physical and mental strain.1. The result of Holmes-rahe’s medical research tells us _____________ A. that the way you handle major events may cause stress B. what should be done to avoid stress C. what kind of event would cause stress D. how to cope with sudden changes in life2. The studies on stress in the early 1970s led to __________ A. widespread concern over its harmful effects B. great panic over the mental disorder it could cause C. an intensive research into stress-related illness D. popular avoidance of stressful jobs3. The score of the Holmes-rahe test shows ____________ A. how much pressure you are under B. how positive events can change your life C. how stressful a major events can be D. how you can deal with life-changing events4. Why is “such simplistic advice” (line1, para.3) impossible to follow____________? A. no one can stay on the same job for long B. no prescription is effective in relieving stress C. people have to get married someday D. you could be missing opportunities5. According to the passage, people who experienced ups and downs may become ______________ A. nervous when faced with difficulties B. physically and mentally strained C. more capable of coping with adversity D. indifferent towards what happens to themPassage 2 More episodes of absent-mindedness—forgetting where you left something or wondering why you just entered a room----are caused by a simple lack of attention, says schacter. “ you’re supposed to remember something, but you haven’t encoded it deeply.” Encoding, Schacter explain, is a special way to pay attention to an event to a major impact on recalling it later. Failure to encode properly can create annoying situations. If you put your mobile phone in a pocket, for example, and don’t pay attention to what you did because you involved in a conversation, you will probably forget that the phone is in the jacket now hanging in your wardrobe(衣柜) . “Your memory itself isn’t failing you.” Says Schacter.? “Rather, you didn’t give your memory system the information it needed.” Lack of interest can also lead to absent-mindedness. “A man who recites sports statistics from 30 years ago,” says Zelinski, “may not remember to drop a letter in the mailbox.” Women have slightly better memories than men, possibly because they pay more attention to their environment, and memory relives on just that. Visual cues can help prevent absent-mindedness, says Schacter. “But be sure the cue is clear and available.” He cautions. If you want to remember to take a medication with lunch, put the pill on the kitchen table---don’t leave it in the medicine chest and write yourself a note that you keep in a pocket. Another common episode of absent-mindedness, walking into a room and wondering why you’re there. Most likely, you were thinking about something else. “Everyone does this from time to time.” Says Zelinski. The best thing to do is to return to where you were before entering the room, and you’ll likely remember.6. Why does the author think that encoding properly is very important?________ A. It helps us understand our memory system better. B. It enables us to recall something fro our memory C. It expands our memory capacity considerably D. It slows down the process of losing our memory7. One possible reason why women have better memories than men is that _______________ A. they have a wider range of interests B. they are more reliant on the environment C. they have an unusual power of focusing their attention D. they are more interested in what’s happening around them8. A note in the pocket can hardly serve as a reminder because________________ A. it will easily get lost B. it’s not clear enough for you to read C. it’s out of your sight D. it might get mixed up with other things9. What do we learn from the last paragraph?________ A. if we focus on our attention on one thing, we might forget another B. memory depends to a certain extent on the environment C. repetition helps improve our memory D. if we keep forgetting things, we’d better return to where we were10. The power of the school had been replaced by the home. To begin with all the factors which are part of intelligence—the child’s understanding of language learning patterns curiosity—are established well before the child enters school at the age of six. Study has shown that even after school begins children’s achievement have been far more influenced by parents than by teachers. This is particularly true about learning that is in subjects such as science. In view of their power it’s sad to see so many parents not making the most of their child’s intelligence. Until recently parents had been warned by educators who asked them not to educate their children many teachers now realize that children can not only at school and parents are being asked to contribute both before and after the child enters school. Parents have been particularly afraid to teach reading at home. Of course, children shouldn’t be pushed to read by their parents but educators have discovered that reading id best taught individually ---and the easiest place to do this is at home. Many four-and –five-year-old who have been shown a few letters and taught their sounds will compose single words of their own with them even before the y have been taught to read. .1.What have researchers found out about their influence of parent and school on the children’s intelligence?_________________________2.What do researchers conclude about children’s learning patterns?_____________________________________________3.In which area may school play a very important role?________________________________________4.Why did many parents fail to make the most of their children’s intelligence?__________________________________5.the author suggests in the last paragraph the parents should be encouraged to ____________________________________Ⅶ. [听力文本资源]Whilst most areas welcome tourists, a beautiful fishing village in Italy would like to see fewer people visit their beautiful home. There were more than two million visitors to this small village last year, and officials think it should be half that number. Because it’s a World Heritage site, it’s become a popular tourist destination. There have also been more tourist ships that arrive with thousands of people that visit the village area. The problem is that all of these people may be damaging the amazing coast of the village. Some officials want to sell tickets to enter the village. However, tourism is their main source of income. Villagers are not able to earn a living from fishing anymore, so tourists provide them the money they need. Some people disagree that there should be a limit on visitors. The Harry Potter series, written by J.K. Rowling, is perhaps the most popular set of novels of the modern era. With seven books and many successful films to its name, the series has gathered about 15 billion dollars in sales. How did the series become so popular? The reason can be broken down into several areas. The first book in the series was rejected 12 times before it was picked up by Bloomsbury—a small publisher in England. So receiving this contract was Rowling's first step to success. However, getting a book contract does not ensure the success of a book. The story was soon loved by children and adults alike. In light of this, Bloomsbury Publishing published a second version of the books with “adult” (less colorful and more boring) book covers. This made it easier for a full range of ages to enjoy the series.Another factor that worked like a charm was that the publisher and Rowling herself, through the books, conducted midnight releases, promotions, and pre-ordering more readers. Customers who feared that their local bookstore would run out of copies responded by pre-ordering over 700,000 copies before the July 8, 2000 release. What does the underlined word “releases” (Para. 3) mean?A. The activity that frees or expresses energy or emotion.B. The announcement about the book’s publishing information.C. The sales of books that is available only at midnight.

The increase in international business and in foreign investment has created a need for executives with knowledge of foreign languages and skills in cross-cultural communication. Americans, however, have not been well trained in either area and, consequently, have not enjoyed the same level of success in negotiation in an international arena as have their foreign counterparts. Negotiating is the process of communicating back and forth for the purpose of reaching an agreement. It involves persuasion and compromise, but in order to participate in either one, the negotiators must understand the ways in which people are persuaded and how compromise is reached within the culture of the negotiation. In many international business negotiations abroad, Americans are perceived as wealthy and impersonal. It often appears to the foreign negotiator that the American represents a large multi-million-dollar corporation that can afford to pay the price without bargaining further. The American negotiator’s role becomes that of an impersonal supplier of information and cash. In studies of American negotiators abroad, several traits have been identified that may serve to confirm this stereotypical perception, while undermining the negotiator’s position. Two traits in particular that cause cross-cultural misunderstanding are directness and impatience on the part of the American negotiator. Furthermore, American negotiators often insist on realizing short-term goals. Foreign negotiators, on the other hand, may value the relationship established between negotiators and may be willing to invest time in it for long-term benefits. In order to solidify the relationship, they may opt for indirect interactions without regard for the time involved in getting to know the other negotiator. Clearly, perceptions and differences in values affect the outcomes of negotiations and the success of negotiators. For Americans to play a more effective role in international business negotiations, they must put forth more effort to improve cross-cultural understanding. "By doing that, we can protect people's health."Over the five-year period, poultry posted the most recalls (168), followed by beef (137) and pork (128).
