With fantastic power, they fly in the sky or swim in the sea. They can make rain, too. The Chinese dragon is a symbol of strength and good luck. We are proud to call ourselves the"descendants (后代)of the dragon". In Chinese, "excellent"people are often called"dragons". A number of Chinese sayings and idioms talk about dragons, for example, "Hoping one's child will become a dragon" means "hoping he or she will be successful". It is said that people born in the Year of the Dragon have certain characteristics (特点). They are creative, confident and brave. There are some famous"dragons" who have done excellent things, for example, the great man Deng Xiaoping, the famous businessman Li Jiacheng and the movie star Zhao Wei. They are all very successful. There are also some traditional festival about dragons in China, such as Dragon Heads-raising Day and Dragon Boat Festival. We have different kinds of activities to celebrate them. These two festivals come every year, but the Year of the Dragon comes every twelve years. 2012 is the Year of the Dragon. The dragon is very important in Chinese culture. As the "descendants of the dragon", it is necessary for us to know the symbolic significance (象征意义)of dragons in our culture. It can help us understand why our parents always want us to be "dragons"(1)What's the main idea of the first paragraph?________A. Why dragons could fly or swim.B. When and how dragons make rain.C. A website about telling parents how to teach children..Is there a way to quickly recall information just before taking an exam? Walking backward may be a good way to solve the problem. Scientists from the University of Roehampton in the UK said this activity can help people improve their short-term memory. Researchers asked 114 volunteers to watch a video. After watching the video, volunteers were divided into three groups. One group was told to walk 10 meters forward. The second group walked 10 meters backward. The third group stood in one place. All three groups were then asked 20 questions about what they saw in the video. The scientists found that the backward-walking group got two more answers correct than the other two groups. This suggests that the connection between time and space is important for how our brains form memory. "Time is really expressed by space, " Study leader Aleksandar Aksentijevic told the Daily Mail. When you walk backward, you see things from a different point compared to walking forward. This difference helps people recall things that happened in the past. And walking backward is not just good for our brains. It is also good for the other parts of our body. Compared to walking forward, walking backward is more challenging. This can help us improve our health. Walking backward uses more energy in a short time and burns more calories (卡路里). Walking backward also puts less stress on our knees. It could be helpful for people who often have pain in their knees. This might be why many old people like walking backward.(1)How many people were in each group when the volunteers were divided into groups?________A. 10. B. 20. C.38 D.57.(2)What's the writer's opinion of walking backward?________A. Walking backward can help you deal with nervousness before an exam.B. Walking backward is good for old people's knees.C. The difference between walking backward and forward.D.Time and space are important for forming memories in the brain..In any environment: (forest, mountain, water-you always see the big animals first: birds , mammals( 哺乳动物), fish. But under your feet, on land or in the water, there are many smaller organisms (生物体) : insects, tiny plants, tiny sea lives and ground dwellers(居民) are " the heart of life on Earth", says naturalist E.O. Wilson. Without them, our world would change completely. Most organisms on Earth live on the ground or just below it. Here they are part of an important cycle. Plants and animals falls to the ground when they die. Later, tiny insects and other organisms break down the dead plants and animal materials. This process finally returns nutrients to the soil and give plants energy. Plants can then help to stay a healthy environment for humans and other animals. Even though most ground organisms are of great importance, scientists know very little about them. To learn more, photographer David Littschwager went to different places around the world, including a forest, a river, a mountain, and a coral reef(珊瑚礁). In each place, he put a green 12-inch (30 cm) cube (立方) on the ground or in the water. Then he and his team counted and photographed the organisms that lived in or moved through the cube. Often they discovered hundreds of them, sometimes even one thousand of one meter-in size. "It was like finding little treasure", he says.(1)Where do most organisms live?________A. In the water or on the land.B. In the sea or on the land.C. In the mountain or in the sea.D. On the ground or below it..(2)What does the underline word "nutrients" (in Paragraph 2)mean?________A. (1)_______We're often tempted to (忍不住的) "spill the beans", (说漏嘴) even if we regret it later. According to Asim Shah, professor in the Menninger Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Baylor College of Medicine, US, keeping a secret may well "become a burden(负担)".(2)_______ An earlier study, led by Anita E. Kelly, a scientist at the University of Notre Dame, US, suggested that keeping a secret could cause stress. People entrusted (受委托的) with secrets can suffer from depression, anxiety, and body aches, reported the Daily Mail. (3)_______Shah explained that people often feel that it will help them keep a person as a friend. Another reason people share secrets is guilt over keeping it from someone close to them. A sense of distrust can develop when people who are close do not share it with each other. "Keeping or sharing secrets often puts people in a position of either gaining or losing the trust of someone," according to Shah. He added that talkative people could let secrets slip out (泄露). But this doesn't mean that it is a good idea only to share secrets with quiet people.(4)_______ To tell such a person a secret may cause them stress, and make them talk about the secret. Shah said that to judge whether to tell someone a secret, you'd better put yourself in their position. (5)_______ Shah also recommended that if you accidentally give up someone's secret you should come clean about it. Let the person know that their secret isn't so secret anymore. A.Keeping secrets is a burden. B.Otherwise, the God will know. C.But it can be hard to keep a secret. D. A quiet person may be someone who keeps everything inside. E. But with secrets so often getting out, why do people share them at all? F. Think about how you would feel to be told that you mustn(')t give the information away. G.This is because people often have an "obsessive and anxious urge to share it with someone".
Doctors are to begin a trial of a drug treatment that could double the time transplanted organs survive in the body. The 20-minute procedure effectively coats donor organs in a protective shield that stops them being rejected by the patient’s immune system. The treatment is expected to prolong the time that organs remain healthy in patients’ bodies and also increase their shelf-life (保存期限), so they can be stored for longer or transported further before being used. If the treatment works, it could ease the burden on organ transplant services, which face an increasing gap between the supply and demand for donor organs. People who receive transplants must take drugs to suppress their immune systems, but the body still reacts enough to cause transplants to fail sooner than they should. A healthy transplanted kidney lasts on average only 10 years, around one third of the time it should last. Organs such as hearts and livers fail even sooner. The consequence is that patients who have had one donor organ often need another. The new treatment, developed by researchers at King’s College London, is based on the defense mechanism healthy organs use to shield themselves from the immune system. Studies suggest the procedure could extend the life of an implanted kidney by around seven years. The scientists believe the treatment will also extend the shelf-life of donor organs, increasing the time they survive outside the body from no more than 24 hours to several days. This could reduce wastage and double the number of organs that work properly once they are transplanted, doctors said. In early tests, only a fifth of organs worked properly after being stored on ice for 16 hours, compared with 50% of those treated with mirococept (药物:米罗西普). A recent pilot study of the treatment on 16 patients found it was safe to use. Patients who receive donated organs treated with mirococept will still need to take drugs to suppress their immune systems, but doctors said an aim of their research was to see if the use of current drugs, which can increase a patient’s risk of cancer, can be reduced. 1 What is one of the purposes of the drug treatment mentioned in the passage? A To make a big profit from the new drug. B To reduce the risk of operations. C To prolong the shelf-life of organs. D To help patients save money. 2 According to the passage, what should the people who receive transplants do? A They need to spend a large fortune on their operations. B They have to take drugs to make the transplants effective. C They need to receive another transplant every ten years. D They have to appreciate the donors all their life. 3 Why do patients treated with the old treatment often need another donor organ? A Because they are painful after transplants. B Because drugs can ease the burden of organs. C Because the body still reacts enough to cause transplants to fail. D Because the donor organs will fail in a very short time. 4 What do we know about the new drug treatment? A It is developed by researchers in US. B It can extend the life of implanted organs. C It is independent of defense mechanism. D It can improve patients’ health. 5 What can we learn from the recent pilot study of the treatment? A The treatment can be used widely someday. B The treatment will destroy the immune system. C The current drug can increase a patient’s risk of cancer. D The result of the study doesn’t satisfy the researchers.

But robins are in danger of wearing themselves out by singing too much. Robins are singing all night﹣as well as during the day, British﹣based researchers say. David Dominoni, of Glasgow University, said that light from street lamps, takeaway signs and homes is affecting the birds' biological clocks, leading to them being wide awake when they should be asleep. Dr Dominon, who is putting cameras inside nesting boxes to track sleeping patterns, said lack of sleep could put the birds' health at risk. His study shows that when robins are exposed to light at night in the lab, it leads to some genes being active at the wrong time of day. And the more birds are exposed to light, the more active they are at night. He told people at a conference, "There have been a couple of studies suggesting they are increasing their song output at night and during the day they are still singing. Singing is a costly behavior and it takes energy. So by increasing their song output, there might be some costs of energy." And it is not just robins that are being kept awake by artificial light. Blackbirds and seagulls are also being more________. Dr Dominoni said, "In Glasgow where I live, gulls are a serious problem. I have people coming to me saying 'You are the bird expert. Can you help us kill these gulls? '. During the breeding (繁殖)season, between April and June, they are very active at night and very noisy and people can't sleep." Although Dr Dominoni has only studied light pollution, other research concluded that robins living in noisy cities have started to sing at night to make themselves heard over loud noise. However, some birds thrive( 兴 旺 ) in noisy environments. A study from California Polytechnic State University found more hummingbirds in areas with heavy industrial machinery. It is thought that they are capitalising on their predators (天敌) fleeting to quieter areas.(1)According to Dr Dominoni's study, what causes robins to sing so much?________A. The breeding season.B. But what is it about serious music training that seems to correlate with outsize success in other fields? I put the question to top﹣flight professionals in industries from tech to finance to media, all of whom had serious past lives as musicians. The phenomenon extends beyond the math﹣music association. Strikingly, many high achievers told me music opened up the pathways to creative thinking. And their experiences suggest that music training sharpens other qualities: Collection. The ability to listen. A way of thinking that weaves together disparate ideas. The power to focus on the present and the future simultaneously. For many of the high achievers I spoke with, music functions as a "hidden language, " as Mr. Wolfensohn calls it, one that enhances the ability to connect disparate or even contradictory ideas. When he ran the World Bank, Mr. Wolfensohn traveled to more than 100 countries, often taking in local performances, which helped him understand "the culture of people, as distinct from their balance sheet." It is in that context that the connection between math and music grabs the most attention. Both are at heart modes of expression. Bruce Kovner, the founder of the hedge fund (对冲基金) Caxton Associates, says he sees similarities between his piano playing and investing strategy; as he says, both "relate to pattern recognition, and some people extend these patterns across different senses." For Roger McNamee, whose Elevation Partners is perhaps best known for its early investment in Facebook, "music and technology have converged, " he says. He became expert on Facebook by using it to promote his band, Moonalice, and now is focusing on video by live﹣streaming its concerts. He says musicians and top professionals share "the almost desperate need to dive deep." This capacity to obsess seems to unite top performers in music and other fields. "I've always believed the reason I've gotten ahead is by outworking other people, " he says. It's a skill learned by "playing that solo one more time, working on that one little section one more time, " and it translates into "working on something over and over again, or double﹣checking or triple﹣checking." He adds, "There's nothing like music to teach you that eventually if you work hard enough, it does get better. You see the results." That's an observation worth remembering at a time when music as a serious pursuit in decline in this country.(1)Music training can enhance all of the following abilities except________.A.handling the present with a long﹣range visionB.listening to different opinions patientlyC.thinking from other people's perspectiveD.identifying connection between different ideas.(2)Bruce Kovner sees a parallel between music and________.A. hedge fund B. patterns C. different senses D. mathematics.(3)By saying "music and technology have converged", Roger McNamee means________.A.technology has increased the channels by which music is promotedB.advanced technology makes sound better than beforeC.Facebook has become a platform for promoting music albumsD.musical techniques are directly used in managing business.(4)The underlined word "observation" in the last paragraph refers to________.A.the claim that music is the key to successB.the belief that results determine the value of musicC.the idea that hard work keeps getting you aheadD.the proposal that one should pursue music seriously.Proudly reading my words, I glanced around the room, only to find my classmates bearing big smiles on their faces and tears in their eyes. Confused, I glanced toward my stone﹣faced teacher. Having no choice, I slowly raised the report I had slaved over, hoping to hide myself. "What could be causing everyone to act this way? " Quickly, I flashed back to the day Miss Lancelot gave me the task. This was the first real task I received in my new school. It seemed simple: go on the Internet and find information about a man named George Washington. Since my idea of history came from an ancient teacher in my home country, I had never heard of that name before. As I searched the name of this fellow, it became evident that there were two people bearing the same name who looked completely different! One invented hundreds of uses for peanuts, while the other led some sort of army across America. I stared at the screen, wondering which one my teacher meant. I called my grandfather for a golden piece of advice: flip a coin. Heads﹣the commander, and tails﹣the peanuts guy. Ah! Tails, my report would be about the great man who invented peanut butter, George Washington Carver. Weeks later, standing before this unfriendly mass, I was totally lost. Oh well, I lowered the paper and sat down at my desk, ________ to find out what I had done wrong. As a classmate began his report, it all became clear, "My report is on George Washington, the man who started the American Revolution." The whole world became quiet! How could I know that she meant that George Washington? Obviously, my grade was awful. Heartbroken but fearless, I decided to turn this around. I talked to Miss Lancelot, but she insisted: No re﹣dos; no new grade. I felt that the punishment was not justified, and I believed I deserved a second chance. Consequently, I threw myself heartily into my work for the rest of the school year. Ten months later, that chance unfolded as I found myself sitting in the headmaster's office with my grandfather, now having an entirely different conversation. I smiled and flashed back to the embarrassing moment at the beginning of the year as the headmaster informed me of my option to skip the sixth grade. Justice is sweet!(1)What did the author's classmates think about his report?________A. Original and interesting. B. Funny and ridiculous. C. Original but boring. D. Funny but puzzling..(2)What caused the author's failure to finish the task?________A.He followed his grandfather's advice and Nipped a coin.B.He was unfamiliar with American history.C.He forgot his teacher's instruction.D.He didn't know why the leacher gave such a task..(3)The underlined word "burning" in Para. 3 probably means________A. annoyed B. ashamed C. ready D. eager.(4)In the end, the author turned things around________A.through his months' effortB.by redoing his taskC.by finding a chance to talk to the headmaster.

While this may be true, many college students are also always running short on something else: time. (1) Here are a few things to consider: Manage your academic time. (2) Consequently, your academic work should always come first when it comes to arranging your time in order of importance. When looking at your schedule for the week, figure out what your academic commitments look like. What time do you have classes? How much homework do you have to do? What assignments are due? When do you have major exams or quizzes?Manage your personal time. It s an unrealistic expectation to think that you can study, go to class, and work all day, every day. (3) Make sure to allow yourself time to go to something fun in the yard, attend a meeting for your favorite club, and just hang out for an hour or so at night with friends over dinner. Doing things that make your personal time more enjoyable and not totally focused on school ? can actually improve your productivity when working on projects later.Keep your health in mind. When people's schedules are tight, one of the first things to go is sleep. While it may be common among college students, a lack of sleep is more hurtful than you might think. It can throw everything into disorder: your mental health, your physical health, your stress level, and, of course, your schedule. (4) Use your technology. Nothing helps a college student stay organized more than a good calendar! Some students use the calendars on their phones; others use things like Google Calendar; others still use the classic paper-calendar model. (5) Just change and try again.A. The Olympic launched first in 1910, followed by the Titanic in 1911, and lastly the Britannic in 1914. The ships had nine decks, and White Star Line decided to focus on marking them the most luxurious ships on the water. Stretching 269.13meters, the Olympic class ship were wonders of naval technology, and everyone thought that they would continue to be so for quite some time. However, all suffered terrible accidents on the open seas. The Olympic got wrecked before the Titanic did, but it was the only one survive and maintain a successful career of 24years. The Titanic was the first to sink after famously hitting a huge iceberg in 1912. Following this disaster, the Britannic hit a naval mine in 1916 and subsequently sank as well. Each ship was coal-powered by several boilers constantly kept running by exhausted crews below deck. Most recognizable of the ship designs are the ship's smoke stacks, but the fourth stack was actually just artistic in nature and served no functional purpose. While two of these ships sank, they were all designed with double hulls(船体)believed to make them "unsinkable", perhaps a mistaken idea that led to the Titanic's and the Britannic's tragic end. The Olympic suffered two crashes with other ships and went on to serve as a hospital ship and troop transport in World War I. Eventually, she was taken out of service in 1935, ending the era of the luxurious Olympic class ocean liners.(1)Which of the following statements is TRUE about the three Olympic class ships?___A. They performed marvelously on the sea.B. They could all break the ice in their way.C. They all experienced terrible misfortunes.D. They were models of modern engineering.(2)What did White Star line have in mind when it purchased the three ships?___A. Their capacity of sailing across all waters.B. The utmost comfort passengers could enjoy.C. Their ability to survive disasters of any kind.D. The long voyages they were able to undertake.(3)What might have led to the tragic end of the Titanic and the Britannic?___A. Their unscientific designsB. Their captains' misjudgmentC. The assumption that they were built with the latest technologyD. The belief that they could never sink with a double-layer body(4)In the end the ship Olympic___.A. was used to carry troopsB. was sunk in World War IC. was converted into a hospital shipD. was retired after her naval service

The increase in international business and in foreign investment has created a need for executives with knowledge of foreign languages and skills in cross-cultural communication. Americans, however, have not been well trained in either area and, consequently, have not enjoyed the same level of success in negotiation in an international arena as have their foreign counterparts. Negotiating is the process of communicating back and forth for the purpose of reaching an agreement. It involves persuasion and compromise, but in order to participate in either one, the negotiators must understand the ways in which people are persuaded and how compromise is reached within the culture of the negotiation. In many international business negotiations abroad, Americans are perceived as wealthy and impersonal. It often appears to the foreign negotiator that the American represents a large multi-million-dollar corporation that can afford to pay the price without bargaining further. The American negotiator’s role becomes that of an impersonal supplier of information and cash. In studies of American negotiators abroad, several traits have been identified that may serve to confirm this stereotypical perception, while undermining the negotiator’s position. Two traits in particular that cause cross-cultural misunderstanding are directness and impatience on the part of the American negotiator. Furthermore, American negotiators often insist on realizing short-term goals. Foreign negotiators, on the other hand, may value the relationship established between negotiators and may be willing to invest time in it for long-term benefits. In order to solidify the relationship, they may opt for indirect interactions without regard for the time involved in getting to know the other negotiator. Clearly, perceptions and differences in values affect the outcomes of negotiations and the success of negotiators. For Americans to play a more effective role in international business negotiations, they must put forth more effort to improve cross-cultural understanding. The Harry Potter series, written by J.K. Rowling, is perhaps the most popular set of novels of the modern era. With seven books and many successful films to its name, the series has gathered about 15 billion dollars in sales. How did the series become so popular? The reason can be broken down into several areas. The first book in the series was rejected 12 times before it was picked up by Bloomsbury—a small publisher in England. So receiving this contract was Rowling's first step to success. However, getting a book contract does not ensure the success of a book. The story was soon loved by children and adults alike. In light of this, Bloomsbury Publishing published a second version of the books with “adult” (less colorful and more boring) book covers. This made it easier for a full range of ages to enjoy the series.Another factor that worked like a charm was that the publisher and Rowling herself, through the books, conducted midnight releases, promotions, and pre-ordering more readers. Customers who feared that their local bookstore would run out of copies responded by pre-ordering over 700,000 copies before the July 8, 2000 release. What does the underlined word “releases” (Para. 3) mean?A. The activity that frees or expresses energy or emotion.B. The announcement about the book’s publishing information.C. The sales of books that is available only at midnight.
