The rise of the Internet has been one of the most transformative developments in human history, comparable in impact to the invention of the printing press and the telegraph.Over two billion people worldwide now have access to vastly more information than ever before, and can communicate with each other instantly, often using Web-connected mobile devices they carry everywhere. But the Internet's tremendous impacts has only just begun. "Mass adoption of the Internet is driving one of the most exciting social, cultural, and political transformations in history, and unlike earlier periods of change, this time the effects are fully global,"Schmidt and Cohen write in their new book. The New Digital Age. Perhaps the most profound changes will come when the five billion people worldwide who currently lack Internet access get online. The authors do an excellent job of examining the implications of the Internet revolution for individuals, governments, and institutions like the news media. But if the book has one major shortcoming,it's that authors don't spend enough time applying a critical eye to the role of Internet businesses in these weeping changes. In their book, the authors provide the most authoritative volume to date that describes-and more importantly predicts-how the Internet will shape our lives in the coming decades. They paint a picture of a world in which individuals, companies, institutions, and governments must deal with two realities, one physical, and one virtual. At the core of the book is the idea that"technology is neutral, but people aren't."By using this concept as a starting point, the authors aim to move beyond the now familiar optimist vs.pessimist dichotomy(对立观点)that has characterized many recent debates about whether the rise of the Internet will ultimately be good or bad for society. In an interview with TIME earlier this week,Cohen said although he and his co-author are optimistic about many aspects of the Internet, they're also realistic about the risks and dangers that lie ahead when the next five billion people come online, particularly with respect to personal privacy and state surveillance(监视). (1) In what way is the rise of the Internet similar to the invention of the printing press and the telegraph? ______ A. It transforms human history. B. It facilitates daily communication. C. It is adopted by all humanity. D. It revolutionizes people's thinking. (2) In what respect is the book The New Digital Age considered inadequate? ______ A. It fails to recognize the impact of the Internet technology. B. It fails to look into the social implications of the Internet. C. It lacks an objective evaluation of the role of Internet businesses. D. It does not address the technical aspects of Internet communication. (3) What does the passage say about the authors of The New Digital Age? ______ A. They leave many questions unanswered concerning the Internet. B. They are optimistic about the future of the Internet revolution. C. They have explored the unknown territories of the virtual world. D. They don't take sides in analyzing the effects of the Internet.

Whenever advertisers want you to stop thinking about the product and to start thinking about something bigger, better, or more attractive than the product, they use that very popular word "like". The word "like" is the advertiser’s equivalent of the magician’s use of misdirection. "Like" gets you to ignore the product and concentrate on the claim the advertiser is making about it. "For skin like peaches and cream" claims the ad for a skin cream. What is this ad really claiming It doesn’t say this cream will give you peaches-and-cream skin. There is no verb in this claim, so it doesn’t even mention using the product. How is skin ever like "peaches and cream".’ Remember, ads must be read exactly according to the dictionary definition of words. This ad is making absolutely no promise for this skin cream. If you think this cream will give you soft, smooth, and youthful-looking skin, you are the one who has read the meaning into the ad. The wine that claims "It’s like taking a trip to France" wants you to think about a romantic evening in Paris as you walk along the street after a wonderful meal in an intimate cafe. Of course, you don’t really believe that a wine can take you to France, but the goal of the ad is to get you to think pleasant, romantic thoughts about France and not about how the wine tastes or how expensive it may be. That little word "like" has taken you away from crushed grapes into a world of your own imaginative making. Who knows, maybe the next time you buy wine, you’ll think those pleasant thoughts when you see this brand of wine, and you’ll buy it. How about the most famous "like" claim of all, "Winston tastes good like a cigarette should" Ignoring the grammatical error here, you might want to know what this claim is saying. Whether a cigarette tastes good or bad is a subjective judgment because what tastes good to one person may well taste horrible to another. There are many people who say that all cigarettes taste terrible, other people who say only some cigarettes taste all right, and still others who say all cigarettes taste good.To promote sales, advertisers often exploit consumers’ ______. A. emotional needB. practical needC. economic statusD. social status

Anxiety disorders are common and range from 10 percent to 20 percent of children and teens. Girl are usually more likely than boys to report anxiety symptoms or signs. Anxiety runs in families due to a combination of inherent and environmental factors. Anxious parents may produce anxious children. When signs are so severe that they interfere with daily life activities, it is time to seek an evaluation from a mental health professional. Consider the following example of a child who suffered stress disorder. Maria, age 12, was at her physician’s office awaiting her yearly checkup. A bullet from a gun battle in the next building tore through the wall and struck her mother in the shoulder, severely wounding her. The mother was rushed to the hospital, but Mafia did not know her fate for several days. Unable or unwilling to speak, visibly anxious and fearful, Mafia was evaluated by a child doctor in the same hospital several days later. He recommended a brief treatment and began by taking Mafia to her mother’s bedside. Mafia, reassured that her mother was alive, nevertheless could not be separated from her. During the following weeks she insisted on sleeping with her mother and would not let her out of her sight. Her mother was equally shocked, and told her daughter she was suffering great pain. The doctor began a series of play treatment sessions using dolls and paly surgical instruments in which Mafia performed operations in her doll hospital. She began to get great pleasure in her sessions. Her mother did not recover so quickly, so the doctor recommended individual treatment for her. The final sessions involved Mafia performing the operation on, not a doll, but her mother, who submitted to patient status once again. Playing out the painful theme was extremely beneficial, and with a minimum of interpretation, both were back to their normal functioning by the month’s end, Mafia did not need any medication. There are many ways of helping anxious children cope with their fears and worries. A careful evaluation and specific treatment plan can help these children get back on the path of normal development. To help an anxious kid out, it is suggested to (). A. tolerate his fears and worriesB. point out his normal grow pathC. put him in a particular treatmentD. ask him to make a self-evaluation

  • question or statement.Hot pot is a traditional dish in China. It is believed to date back more than 1,000 years to the time of the Jin Dynasty. Hot pot's origins can be found in the dining practices of Mongolian horsemen who rode across the steppe and into northern China. Legend has it that the Mongols used their helmets as pots to simmer (炖) broth (汤底) over open fires, and cooked chunks of meat in the broth.Hot pot cooking seems to have spread to northern China during the Tang Dynasty. In the regional variations developed with different ingredients such as seafood. In the centuries that witnessed the growth of the Song Dynasty, hot pot moved — and changed — further south, with each successive region adapting it to their local ingredients and tastes. The ingredients in a hot pot vary a lot from region to region. Perhaps the most famous hot pot is the Chongqing or Sichuan hot pot. It features a dark red broth chock-full (塞满了的) of spices, chili peppers, and the uniquely mouth-numbing Sichuan peppers. In Beijing and elsewhere in the north, hot pot broth tends to be mild and, compared to its racy southern "cousins", a little light. In the northeast of China, a kind of local sauerkraut (酸菜) is used to add some tang (强烈的味道), making the broth a bit sour. People can choose a version of hot pot according to their taste.1 Hot pot is believed to date back more than 1,000 years to the time of _______.A. the Jin Dynasty B. the Tang DynastyC. the Song Dynasty D. the Yuan Dynasty

  • The increase in international business and in foreign investment has created a need for executives with knowledge of foreign languages and skills in cross-cultural communication. Americans, however, have not been well trained in either area and, consequently, have not enjoyed the same level of success in negotiation in an international arena as have their foreign counterparts. Negotiating is the process of communicating back and forth for the purpose of reaching an agreement. It involves persuasion and compromise, but in order to participate in either one, the negotiators must understand the ways in which people are persuaded and how compromise is reached within the culture of the negotiation. In many international business negotiations abroad, Americans are perceived as wealthy and impersonal. It often appears to the foreign negotiator that the American represents a large multi-million-dollar corporation that can afford to pay the price without bargaining further. The American negotiator’s role becomes that of an impersonal supplier of information and cash. In studies of American negotiators abroad, several traits have been identified that may serve to confirm this stereotypical perception, while undermining the negotiator’s position. Two traits in particular that cause cross-cultural misunderstanding are directness and impatience on the part of the American negotiator. Furthermore, American negotiators often insist on realizing short-term goals. Foreign negotiators, on the other hand, may value the relationship established between negotiators and may be willing to invest time in it for long-term benefits. In order to solidify the relationship, they may opt for indirect interactions without regard for the time involved in getting to know the other negotiator. Clearly, perceptions and differences in values affect the outcomes of negotiations and the success of negotiators. For Americans to play a more effective role in international business negotiations, they must put forth more effort to improve cross-cultural understanding. • The Harry Potter series, written by J.K. Rowling, is perhaps the most popular set of novels of the modern era. With seven books and many successful films to its name, the series has gathered about 15 billion dollars in sales. How did the series become so popular? The reason can be broken down into several areas. The first book in the series was rejected 12 times before it was picked up by Bloomsbury—a small publisher in England. So receiving this contract was Rowling's first step to success. However, getting a book contract does not ensure the success of a book. The story was soon loved by children and adults alike. In light of this, Bloomsbury Publishing published a second version of the books with “adult” (less colorful and more boring) book covers. This made it easier for a full range of ages to enjoy the series.Another factor that worked like a charm was that the publisher and Rowling herself, through the books, conducted midnight releases, promotions, and pre-ordering more readers. Customers who feared that their local bookstore would run out of copies responded by pre-ordering over 700,000 copies before the July 8, 2000 release. What does the underlined word “releases” (Para. 3) mean?A. The activity that frees or expresses energy or emotion.B. The announcement about the book’s publishing information.C. The sales of books that is available only at midnight.
