For as long as I can remember,on the third Saturday of every month,my mother,my brother, and I would volunteer at our local food bank to hand out food.I learned quickly that TV shows don't show what poverty(贫穷) and hunger are really like in real life.I had been made to believe that hunger only happens in the poorest comers of the world, far from where I live.Unluckily, that is simply not the case.As Feeding America reports, over 47 million people in the US face hunger, including one in every five children. In 2024,I had the chance to visit the Food Bank of the Rio Grande Valley,a member of the Feeding America network,in McAllen,Texas.I worked with some amazing volunteers to give out holiday meals to families in need. This experience impressed me as the most special chance of my life. While other food distribution(分发) experiences are meaningful, they are much more formalized(正规的) with organized lines. However, this experience allowed me to get close to those in need. With each food box we delivered and each"thank you"we heard,I felt connected to the McAllen community in a way that I had never thought possible. Meeting families who were living in small,self-made homes, each with up to ten children and adults, showed me the meaning of resilience(坚韧).Though they were in challenging situations, the children remained joyful and hopeful.I still can't get it out of my head. There are so many people that spend a lot of time helping others as volunteers. The truth is,there is still so much to be done to end hunger.I hope we all do our best to support organizations like Feeding America that are trying to make a difference in communities all across the country.(1)What did the author realize after she began to volunteer? ____ A.Hunger is a serious problem in the US.B.Hunger happens in the poorest countries.C.Many children in the US are in bad health.D.There are not enough volunteers in the US.(2)What made the author's 2024 volunteering experience different? ____ A.She learnt a lot from other communities.B.She saw organized lines of volunteers.C.She delivered meals during holidays.D.She got close to people in need.(3)What impressed the author most about the children? ____ A.They had a large family.B.They lived in small houses.C.They were positive about life.D.They faced many challenges.(4)What does the last paragraph mainly tell us? ____ A.The responsibilities of Feeding America.B.The ways to make a difference in communities.C.The need for more volunteers to help fight hunger.D.The success of Feeding America in ending hunger.(5)From which section of a newspaper can we read this article? ____ A.SocietyB.HistoryC.EconomyD.Science

Part I Reading Comprehension [40 minutes / 40 points] Directions: There are 4 passages in this section. Each followed by some questions. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C, and D. You should decide on the best choice. Passage 1 Newspapers, along with reporting the news, instruct, entertain, and give opinion. An important way for reading a large, big-city newspaper is knowing how to take it apart. Can you find these separate sections: world news, national and local news, sports, business, entertainment, opinions, classified ads? Does your paper have other sections? News stories give facts, not the author’s opinions. Editorials do the opposite: you can expect an editorial to take sides. Some newspaper editorials have a by-line with the author’s name, but many newspapers have unsigned editorials. These reflect the opinions of the publisher or editor. You can be a better reader if you know what to expect in a newspaper. For example, you can expect headlines to omit unnecessary words. You can expect to find the most important facts in the lead paragraph (the first paragraph) of a news story. You can expect important news items to be on the front page. You can expect less important items to be on the inside pages. Most of all, the more you know about the current news, the more you will understand what is in the newspaper; important stories are generally presented one day and followed up on following days. So, an important way for reading newspapers is reading one frequently. 1. To read a large newspaper, a good way is _________. A. to find separate sections B. to read it from cover to cover C. to do some paper-cutting D. to predict what is inside the newspaper 2. Which of the following statements about news stories is true? A. News stories reflect the opinions of the editor. B. News stories tell the facts without comments. C. News stories contain both facts and opinions. D. News stories express the writer’s point of view. 3. If you want to know less important news without any details, you can read _________. A. the headlines on the inside pages B. news stories on the front page C. the lead paragraphs of the news on the front page D. news items on the inside pages only 4. To follow the current news, the best way is to _________. A. read extensively and thoroughly B. read various newspapers skillfully C. read a large big-city newspaper carefully D. read one newspaper frequently 5. The main idea of this passage is _________. A. how to read newspapers effectively B. how to find important news stories C. how to read stories and editorials D. how to tell apart different news sections
As Artificial Intelligence(AI) becomes increasingly sophisticated, there are growing concerns that robots could become a threat. This danger can be avoided, according to computer science professor Stuart Russell, if we figure out how to turn human values into a programmable code. Russell argues that as robots take on more complicated tasks, it’s necessary to translate our morals into AI language. For example, if a robot does chores around the house, you wouldn’t want it to put the pet cat in the oven to make dinner for the hungry children. “You would want that robot preloaded with a good set of values,” said Russell. Some robots are already programmed with basic human values. For example, mobile robots have been programmed to keep a comfortable distance from humans. Obviously there are cultural differences, but if you were talking to another person and they came up close in your personal space, you wouldn’t think that’s the kind of thing a properly brought-up person would do. It will be possible to create more sophisticated moral machines, if only we can find a way to set out human values as clear rules. Robots could also learn values from drawing patterns from large sets of data on human behavior. They are dangerous only if programmers are careless. The biggest concern with robots going against human values is that human beings fail to so sufficient testing and they’ve produced a system that will break some kind of taboo(禁忌). One simple check would be to program a robot to check the correct course of action with a human when presented with an unusual situation. If the robot is unsure whether an animal is suitable for the microwave, it has the opportunity to stop, send out beeps(嘟嘟声), and ask for directions from a human. If we humans aren’t quite sure about a decision, we go and ask somebody else. The most difficult step in programming values will be deciding exactly what we believe in moral, and how to create a set of ethical rules. But if we come up with an answer, robots could be good for humanity. 【小题1】What does the author say about the threat of robots? A.It may constitute a challenge to computer progranmers. B.It accompanies all machinery involving high technology. C.It can be avoided if human values are translated into their language. B.They are outgoing. C.They are ignorant. D.They are ill-bred. 【小题3】How do robots learn human values? A.By interacting with humans in everyday life situations. B.By following the daily routines of civilized human beings. C.By picking up patterns from massive data on human behavior. D.By imitating the behavior of property brought-up human beings. 【小题4】What will a well-programmed robot do when facing an unusual situation? A.keep a distance from possible dangers. B.Stop to seek advice from a human being. C.Trigger its built-in alarm system at once. D.Do sufficient testing before taking action. 【小题5】What is most difficult to do when we turn human values into a programmable code? A.Determine what is moral and ethical. B.Design some large-scale experiments. C.Set rules for man-machine interaction. D.Develop a more sophisticated program.

The Harry Potter series, written by J.K. Rowling, is perhaps the most popular set of novels of the modern era. With seven books and many successful films to its name, the series has gathered about 15 billion dollars in sales. How did the series become so popular? The reason can be broken down into several areas. The first book in the series was rejected 12 times before it was picked up by Bloomsbury—a small publisher in England. So receiving this contract was Rowling's first step to success. However, getting a book contract does not ensure the success of a book. The story was soon loved by children and adults alike. In light of this, Bloomsbury Publishing published a second version of the books with “adult” (less colorful and more boring) book covers. This made it easier for a full range of ages to enjoy the series.Another factor that worked like a charm was that the publisher and Rowling herself, through the books, conducted midnight releases, promotions, and pre-ordering more readers. Customers who feared that their local bookstore would run out of copies responded by pre-ordering over 700,000 copies before the July 8, 2000 release. What does the underlined word “releases” (Para. 3) mean?A. The activity that frees or expresses energy or emotion.B. The announcement about the book’s publishing information.C. The sales of books that is available only at midnight.

The increase in international business and in foreign investment has created a need for executives with knowledge of foreign languages and skills in cross-cultural communication. Americans, however, have not been well trained in either area and, consequently, have not enjoyed the same level of success in negotiation in an international arena as have their foreign counterparts. Negotiating is the process of communicating back and forth for the purpose of reaching an agreement. It involves persuasion and compromise, but in order to participate in either one, the negotiators must understand the ways in which people are persuaded and how compromise is reached within the culture of the negotiation. In many international business negotiations abroad, Americans are perceived as wealthy and impersonal. It often appears to the foreign negotiator that the American represents a large multi-million-dollar corporation that can afford to pay the price without bargaining further. The American negotiator’s role becomes that of an impersonal supplier of information and cash. In studies of American negotiators abroad, several traits have been identified that may serve to confirm this stereotypical perception, while undermining the negotiator’s position. Two traits in particular that cause cross-cultural misunderstanding are directness and impatience on the part of the American negotiator. Furthermore, American negotiators often insist on realizing short-term goals. Foreign negotiators, on the other hand, may value the relationship established between negotiators and may be willing to invest time in it for long-term benefits. In order to solidify the relationship, they may opt for indirect interactions without regard for the time involved in getting to know the other negotiator. Clearly, perceptions and differences in values affect the outcomes of negotiations and the success of negotiators. For Americans to play a more effective role in international business negotiations, they must put forth more effort to improve cross-cultural understanding. [共5题](1)What kind of manager is needed in present international business and foreign investment? [本题2分]A. The man who represents a large multi-million-dollar corporation. B. question or statement.Hot pot is a traditional dish in China. It is believed to date back more than 1,000 years to the time of the Jin Dynasty. Hot pot's origins can be found in the dining practices of Mongolian horsemen who rode across the steppe and into northern China. Legend has it that the Mongols used their helmets as pots to simmer (炖) broth (汤底) over open fires, and cooked chunks of meat in the broth.Hot pot cooking seems to have spread to northern China during the Tang Dynasty. In the regional variations developed with different ingredients such as seafood. In the centuries that witnessed the growth of the Song Dynasty, hot pot moved — and changed — further south, with each successive region adapting it to their local ingredients and tastes. The ingredients in a hot pot vary a lot from region to region. Perhaps the most famous hot pot is the Chongqing or Sichuan hot pot. It features a dark red broth chock-full (塞满了的) of spices, chili peppers, and the uniquely mouth-numbing Sichuan peppers. In Beijing and elsewhere in the north, hot pot broth tends to be mild and, compared to its racy southern "cousins", a little light. In the northeast of China, a kind of local sauerkraut (酸菜) is used to add some tang (强烈的味道), making the broth a bit sour. People can choose a version of hot pot according to their taste.1 Hot pot is believed to date back more than 1,000 years to the time of _______.A. the Jin Dynasty B. the Tang DynastyC. the Song Dynasty D. the Yuan Dynasty
