There is much discussion today about whether economic growth is desirable. At an earlier period, our desire for material wealth may have been justified. Now,however, this desire for more than we need is causing serious problems.Even though we have good intentions,we may be producing too much, too fast. Those who criticize economic growth argue that we must slow down. They believe that society is approaching certain limits on growth. These include the fixed supply of natural resources, the possible negative effects of industry on the natural environment, and the continuing increase in the world""s population. As society reaches these limits, economic growth can no longer continue, and the quality of life will decrease.People who want more economic growth,on the other hand, argue that even at the present growth rate there are still many poor people in the world. These proponents of economic growth believe that only more growth can create the capital needed to improve the quality of life in the world.Furthermore, they argue that only continued growth can provide the financial resources required to protect our natural surroundings from industrialization. This debate over the desirability of continued economic growth is of vital importance to business and industry. If those who argue against economic growth are correct, the problems they mention cannot be ignored. To find a solution, economists and business community must pay attention to these problems and discuss them with one another.72.According to those who argue against economic growth we must slow down for the following reasons EXCEPT that___.A.our natural surroundings are in danger of being destroyed by industryB.the fixed supply of natural resources marks a point beyond which economic growth cannot continueC.the world population is ever increasingD.more efforts should be made to improve the quality of our material life73..Those who want more economic growth believe that continued economic growth___.A.is essential to the well-being of society as a wholeB.can provide the solution to many of our social problems todayC.can protect our environment from being polluted by industryD.can provide us with more natural resources for industrialization74..The word"proponents"(in Paragraph 3)probably means___.A.arguments in support of somethingB.disagreements with other peopleC.people who argue for somethingD.people who argue against something75..The passage is mainly about___.A.the conflict between economists and the industrial businessB.the present debate on economic growthC.the advantages and disadvantages of economic growthD.the importance of the debate on economic growth.

House work might seem a drag, but researchers have suggested tasks like dusting, sweeping floors and washing the windows might help adults to stay healthy into old age.Writing in the journal BMJ Open,a Singapore-based team of researchers said regular physical activity "improves physical and mental health, and relieves the risks and effects of chronic diseases among older adults". The team randomly chose adults from the town of Yishun in Singapore, and asked them to complete cognitive function tests as well as activities to assess their physical capabilities, such as standing up from a chair as quickly as they could.Participants were also quizzed on their levels of physical activity, including the amount of light housework and heavy housework they did,and were assessed for their risk of having a fall based on measures such as knee extension strength. The study involved 249 participants aged 21-64 and 240 participants aged 65- 90.Most of those who reported doing high levels of heavy or light housework were women. After taking into account factors including age and sex,the team found cognitive scores and attention scores were 8% and 14% higher respectively for older adults doing high amounts of heavy housework— on average 131 minutes a week— compared with low levels, which appeared to amount to none at all.Sit-to-stand times were lower for older adults reporting high amounts of heavy housework compared with low amounts, while they were also assessed as being at lower risk of having a fall. Dr Shiou-Liang Wee,the co-author of the research, said health messaging on staying active should not just be about recreational physical activities. "Housework is a purposeful activity performed by many older adults.Independent of recreation, commuting and other work-related physical activity, heavy housework is linked to sharper memory and better falls protection in older adults," he said.(1)What does the team find? ____ A.Housework is a drag to the aged.B.Health is connected with regular exercise.C.Only doing housework can the aged stay healthy.D.Regular physical activity is dangerous for the aged.(2)What is paragraph 2 mainly about? ____ A.The research procedure.B.The research result.C.The research purpose.D.The research institution.(3)What was considered in the study? ____ A.Intelligence and age.B.Education and sex.C.Age and sex.D.Family and income.(4)What may Shiou-Liang Wee agree with? ____ A.Commuting is linked to sharper memory.B.Heavy housework equals recreational activity.C.People only need recreational physical activity for health.D.Recreational physical activity shouldn't replace housework.
Many with New College Degree Find the Job Market Humbling The individual stories are familiar. The chemistry major tending bar. The classics major answering phones. The Italian studies major stocking shelves at Wal-Mart. Now evidence is emerging that the damage caused by the sour economy is more widespread than just a few careers led astray (偏离正轨的) or postponed. Even for college graduates―the people who were most protected from the effects of recession―the outlook is rather bleak (黯淡的). Employment rates for new college graduates have fallen sharply in the last two years. What’s more, only half of the jobs landed by these new graduates even require a college degree, reviving debates about whether higher education is "worth it" after all. "I have friends with the same degree as me, from a worse school, but because of who they knew or when they happened to graduate, they’re in much better jobs," said Kyle Bishop, 23, a 2009 graduate of the University of Pittsburgh who has spent the last two years waiting tables, delivering beer, working at a bookstore and entering data. "It’s more about luck than anything else." The average starting salary for students graduating from four-year colleges in 2009 and 2010 was 27,000, down from 30,000 for those who entered the work force in 2006 to 2008, according to a study released on Wednesday by the John J. Heldrich Center for Workforce Development at Rutgers University. That is a decline of 10 percent, even before taking inflation into account. Of course, these are the lucky ones―the graduates who found a job. Among the members of the class of 2010, just 56 percent had held at least one job by this spring, when the survey was conducted. That compares with 90 percent of graduates from the classes of 2006 and 2007. (Some have gone for further education or opted out of the labor force, while many are still trying very hard to get a job.) Even these figures understate the damage done to these workers’ careers. Many have taken jobs that do not make use of their skills; about only half of recent college graduates said that their first job required a college degree. The choice of major is quite important. Certain majors had better luck finding a job that required a college degree, according to an analysis by Andrew M. Sum, an economist at Northeastern University, of 2009 Labor Department data for college graduates under 25. Young graduates who majored in education and teaching or engineering were most likely to find a job requiring a college degree, while area studies majors―those who majored in Latin American studies, for example―and humanities majors were least likely to do so. Among all recent education graduates, 71.1 percent were in jobs that required a college degree; of all area studies majors, the share was 44.7 percent. An analysis by The New York Times of Labor Department data about college graduates aged 25 to 34 found that the number of these workers employed in food service, restaurants and bars had risen 17 percent in 2009 from 2008, though the sample size was small. There were similar or bigger employment increases at gas stations and fuel dealers, food and alcohol stores, and taxi and limousine services. This may be a waste of a college degree, but it also displaces (使离开) the less-educated workers who would normally take these jobs. "The less schooling you had, the more likely you were to get thrown out of the labor market altogether," said Mr. Sum, noting that unemployment rates for high school graduates and dropouts are always much higher than those for college graduates. Mr. Bishop, the Pittsburgh graduate, said he is "terrified" of the effects his starter jobs might have on his ultimate career, which he hopes to be in publishing or writing. "It looks bad to have all these short-term jobs on your resume, but you do have to pay the bills," he said, adding that right now his student loan debt was over 70,000. Many graduates will probably take on more student debt. More than 60 percent of those who graduated in the last five years say they will need more formal education to be successful. "I knew there weren’t going to be many job prospects for me until I got my Ph.D. ," said Travis Patterson, 23, a 2010 graduate of California State University, Fullerton. He is working as an administrative assistant for a property management company and studying psychology in graduate school. While it may not have anything to do with his degree, "it helps pay my rent and tuition, and that’s what matters. " Going back to school does offer the possibility of joining the labor force when the economy is better. Unemployment rates are also generally lower for people with advanced schooling. Those who do not go back to school may be on a lower-paying trajectory (道路) for years. They start at a lower salary, and they may begin their careers with employers that pay less on average or have less room for growth. "Their salary history follows them wherever they go," said Carl Van Horn, a labor economist at Rutgers. "It’s like a parrot on your shoulder, travelling with you everywhere, constantly telling you ’No, you can’t make that much money.’" And while young people who have survived a tough job market may shy from risks during their careers, the best way to nullify (抵消……的影响) an unlucky graduation date is to change jobs when you can, says Till yon Wachter, an economist at Columbia. "If you don’t move within five years of graduating, fro" some reason you get stuck where you are," Mr. von Wachter said. "By your late 20s, you’re often married, and have a family and have a house. You stop the active pattern of moving jobs. What did the study by the John J. Heldrich Center for Workforce Development reveal A.Graduates starting working in 2010 got higher pay than those in 2006.B.Most of the recent college graduates were lucky enough to find a job.C.More graduates chose to get further education instead of taking a job.D.The starting salary for new college graduates declined in recent years.

The increase in international business and in foreign investment has created a need for executives with knowledge of foreign languages and skills in cross-cultural communication. Americans, however, have not been well trained in either area and, consequently, have not enjoyed the same level of success in negotiation in an international arena as have their foreign counterparts. Negotiating is the process of communicating back and forth for the purpose of reaching an agreement. It involves persuasion and compromise, but in order to participate in either one, the negotiators must understand the ways in which people are persuaded and how compromise is reached within the culture of the negotiation. In many international business negotiations abroad, Americans are perceived as wealthy and impersonal. It often appears to the foreign negotiator that the American represents a large multi-million-dollar corporation that can afford to pay the price without bargaining further. The American negotiator’s role becomes that of an impersonal supplier of information and cash. In studies of American negotiators abroad, several traits have been identified that may serve to confirm this stereotypical perception, while undermining the negotiator’s position. Two traits in particular that cause cross-cultural misunderstanding are directness and impatience on the part of the American negotiator. Furthermore, American negotiators often insist on realizing short-term goals. Foreign negotiators, on the other hand, may value the relationship established between negotiators and may be willing to invest time in it for long-term benefits. In order to solidify the relationship, they may opt for indirect interactions without regard for the time involved in getting to know the other negotiator. Clearly, perceptions and differences in values affect the outcomes of negotiations and the success of negotiators. For Americans to play a more effective role in international business negotiations, they must put forth more effort to improve cross-cultural understanding. [共5题](1)What kind of manager is needed in present international business and foreign investment? [本题2分]A. The man who represents a large multi-million-dollar corporation. B. The Harry Potter series, written by J.K. Rowling, is perhaps the most popular set of novels of the modern era. With seven books and many successful films to its name, the series has gathered about 15 billion dollars in sales. How did the series become so popular? The reason can be broken down into several areas. The first book in the series was rejected 12 times before it was picked up by Bloomsbury—a small publisher in England. So receiving this contract was Rowling's first step to success. However, getting a book contract does not ensure the success of a book. The story was soon loved by children and adults alike. In light of this, Bloomsbury Publishing published a second version of the books with “adult” (less colorful and more boring) book covers. This made it easier for a full range of ages to enjoy the series.Another factor that worked like a charm was that the publisher and Rowling herself, through the books, conducted midnight releases, promotions, and pre-ordering more readers. Customers who feared that their local bookstore would run out of copies responded by pre-ordering over 700,000 copies before the July 8, 2000 release. What does the underlined word “releases” (Para. 3) mean?A. The activity that frees or expresses energy or emotion.B. The announcement about the book’s publishing information.C. The sales of books that is available only at midnight.

question or statement.Hot pot is a traditional dish in China. It is believed to date back more than 1,000 years to the time of the Jin Dynasty. Hot pot's origins can be found in the dining practices of Mongolian horsemen who rode across the steppe and into northern China. Legend has it that the Mongols used their helmets as pots to simmer (炖) broth (汤底) over open fires, and cooked chunks of meat in the broth.Hot pot cooking seems to have spread to northern China during the Tang Dynasty. In the regional variations developed with different ingredients such as seafood. In the centuries that witnessed the growth of the Song Dynasty, hot pot moved — and changed — further south, with each successive region adapting it to their local ingredients and tastes. The ingredients in a hot pot vary a lot from region to region. Perhaps the most famous hot pot is the Chongqing or Sichuan hot pot. It features a dark red broth chock-full (塞满了的) of spices, chili peppers, and the uniquely mouth-numbing Sichuan peppers. In Beijing and elsewhere in the north, hot pot broth tends to be mild and, compared to its racy southern "cousins", a little light. In the northeast of China, a kind of local sauerkraut (酸菜) is used to add some tang (强烈的味道), making the broth a bit sour. People can choose a version of hot pot according to their taste.1 Hot pot is believed to date back more than 1,000 years to the time of _______.A. the Jin Dynasty B. the Tang DynastyC. the Song Dynasty D. the Yuan Dynasty
