A small robot may help children who are ill in hospital or at home. These children may feel lonely without their friends or classmates. The robot takes their places at school.Through the robot, the children can hear their teachers and friends. The robot is called AV1.A Norwegian company called No Isolation created the robot.Dolva explains how the robot AV1 works. She says from home, children use a tablet or phone to start the robot. Then they use the same device to control the robot's movements. At school, the robot becomes their eyes, ears and voice. "So,it sits at the child's desk in the classroom and the child uses a tablet or a phone to start it and control its movements and talks through it.So it's the eyes, the ears and the voice at school." The robot is equipped with speakers, microphones and cameras that make communication easy. AV1 is large and looks like a human for a reason.Dolva says this is important because the robot is supposed to be a friend of the children. Some pessimistic experts feel that the automobile (机动车) is bound to fall into disuse. They see a day in the not-too-distant future when all autos will be abandoned (放弃) and allowed to rust. Other authorities, however, think the auto is here to stay. They hold that the car will remain a leading means of urban travel in the foreseeable future. The car will undoubtedly change significantly over the next 30 years. It should become smaller, safer, and more economical, and should not be powered by the gasoline engine. The car of the future should be far more pollution-free than present types. Regardless of its power source, the auto in the future will still be the main problem in urban traffic jams. One proposed solution to this problem is the automated (自动化的) highway system. When the auto enters the highway system, a retractable (可伸缩的) arm will drop from the auto and make contact with a rail, which is similar to those powering subway trains electrically. Once attached to the rail, the car will become electrically powered from the system, and control of the ve hicle will pass to a central computer. The computer will then monitor all of the car's movements. The driver will use a telephone to dial instructions about his destination (目的地) into the system. Thecomputer will calculate the best route, and reserve space for the car all the way to the correct exit from the highway. The driver will then be free to relax and wait for the buzzer that will warn him of his coming exit. It is estimated (估计) that an automated highway will be able to handle 10,000 vehicles per hour, compared with the 1,500 to 2,000 vehicles that can be carried by a present-day highway.(1)One significant improvement in the future car will probably be ____ .A. its power sourceB. its driving systemC. its monitoring systemD. its seating space(2)What is the author's main concern? ____ A. How to make automobiles pollution-free.B. How to make smaller and safer automobiles.C. How to solve the problem of traffic jams.D. How to develop an automated subway system.(3)What provides autos with electric power in an automated highway system? ____ A. A rail.B. An engine.C. A retractable arm.D. A computer controller.(4)In an automated highway system, all the driver needs to do is ____ .A. keep in the right routeB. wait to arrive at his destinationC. inform the system of his destination by phoneD. keep in constant touch with the computer center

Call it the learning paradox:the more you struggle and even fail while you're trying to learn new information, the better you're likely to recall and apply that information later. The learning paradox is at the heart of"productive failure,"a phenomenon identified by researcher Manu Kapur points out that while the model adopted by many teachers when introducing students to new knowledge providing lots of structure and guidance early on,until the students show that they can do it on their own makes intuitive sense,it may not be the best way to promote learning.Rather,it's better to let the learners wrestle with the material on their own for a while, refraining from giving them any assistance at the start. In a paper published recently,Kapur applied the principle of productive failure to mathematical problem solving in three schools. With one group of students, the teacher provided strong"scaffolding"--instructional support and feedback. With the teacher's help, these pupils were able to find the answers to their set of problems.Meanwhile,a second group was directed to solve the same problems by cooperating with one another, without any prompts from their instructor. These students weren't able to complete the problems correctly. But in the course of trying to do so,they generated a lot of ideas about the nature of the problems and about what potential solutions would look like. And when the two groups were tested on what they'd learned the second group"significantly outperformed"the first. The apparent struggles of the floundering (挣扎的) group have what Kapur calls a"hidden efficacy":they lead people to understand the deep structure of problems, not simply their correct solutions. When these students encounter a new problem of the same type on a test, they're able to transfer the knowledge they've gathered more effectively than those who were the passive recipients of someone else's expertise. In the real world, problems rarely come neatly packaged,so being able to discern their deep structure is key. But,Kapur notes, none of us like to fail,no matter how often Silicon Valley entrepreneurs praise the beneficial effects of an idea that fails or a start-up company that crashes and burns. So we need to"design for productive failure"by building it into the learning process,Kapur has identified three conditions that promote this kind of beneficial struggle.First, choose problems to work on that"challenge but do not frustrate."Second, provide learners with opportunities to explain and elaborate on what they're doing.Third, give learners the chance to compare and contrast good and bad solutions to the problems. And to those students who protest this tough-love teaching style:you'll thank me later. 66.Why does the author call the learning process a paradox? A.Pains do not necessarily lead to gains. B.What is learned is rarely applicable in life. C.Failure more often than not feeds success. D.The more is taught, the less is learned. 67.What does Kapur disapprove of in teaching? A.Asking students to find and solve problems on their own. B.Developing students'ability to apply what they learn. C.Giving students detailed guidance and instruction. D.Allowing students a free hand in problem solving. 68.What do people tend to think of providing strong scaffolding in teaching? A.It will make teaching easier. B.It is a sensible way of teaching. C.It can motivate(激发) average students. D.It will build up students'confidence. 69.What kind of problem should be given to students to solve according to Kapur? A.It should be able to encourage cooperative learning. B.It should be easy enough so as not to frustrate students. C.It should be solvable by average students with ease. D.It should be difficult enough but still within their reach. 70.What can be expected of this tough-love teaching style? A.Students will be grateful in the long term. B.Teachers will meet with a lot of resistance. C.Parents will think it too harsh on their kids. D.It may not be able to yield the desired results.

  • The increase in international business and in foreign investment has created a need for executives with knowledge of foreign languages and skills in cross-cultural communication. Americans, however, have not been well trained in either area and, consequently, have not enjoyed the same level of success in negotiation in an international arena as have their foreign counterparts. Negotiating is the process of communicating back and forth for the purpose of reaching an agreement. It involves persuasion and compromise, but in order to participate in either one, the negotiators must understand the ways in which people are persuaded and how compromise is reached within the culture of the negotiation. In many international business negotiations abroad, Americans are perceived as wealthy and impersonal. It often appears to the foreign negotiator that the American represents a large multi-million-dollar corporation that can afford to pay the price without bargaining further. The American negotiator’s role becomes that of an impersonal supplier of information and cash. In studies of American negotiators abroad, several traits have been identified that may serve to confirm this stereotypical perception, while undermining the negotiator’s position. Two traits in particular that cause cross-cultural misunderstanding are directness and impatience on the part of the American negotiator. Furthermore, American negotiators often insist on realizing short-term goals. Foreign negotiators, on the other hand, may value the relationship established between negotiators and may be willing to invest time in it for long-term benefits. In order to solidify the relationship, they may opt for indirect interactions without regard for the time involved in getting to know the other negotiator. Clearly, perceptions and differences in values affect the outcomes of negotiations and the success of negotiators. For Americans to play a more effective role in international business negotiations, they must put forth more effort to improve cross-cultural understanding. [共5题](1)What kind of manager is needed in present international business and foreign investment? [本题2分]A. The man who represents a large multi-million-dollar corporation. B. The man with knowledge of foreign languages and skills in cross-cultural communication. C. The man who is wealthy and impersonal. D. The man who can negotiate with his foreign counterparts.

  • question or statement.Hot pot is a traditional dish in China. It is believed to date back more than 1,000 years to the time of the Jin Dynasty. Hot pot's origins can be found in the dining practices of Mongolian horsemen who rode across the steppe and into northern China. Legend has it that the Mongols used their helmets as pots to simmer (炖) broth (汤底) over open fires, and cooked chunks of meat in the broth.Hot pot cooking seems to have spread to northern China during the Tang Dynasty. In the regional variations developed with different ingredients such as seafood. In the centuries that witnessed the growth of the Song Dynasty, hot pot moved — and changed — further south, with each successive region adapting it to their local ingredients and tastes. The ingredients in a hot pot vary a lot from region to region. Perhaps the most famous hot pot is the Chongqing or Sichuan hot pot. It features a dark red broth chock-full (塞满了的) of spices, chili peppers, and the uniquely mouth-numbing Sichuan peppers. In Beijing and elsewhere in the north, hot pot broth tends to be mild and, compared to its racy southern "cousins", a little light. In the northeast of China, a kind of local sauerkraut (酸菜) is used to add some tang (强烈的味道), making the broth a bit sour. People can choose a version of hot pot according to their taste.1 Hot pot is believed to date back more than 1,000 years to the time of _______.A. the Jin Dynasty B. the Tang DynastyC. the Song Dynasty D. the Yuan Dynasty

  • The Harry Potter series, written by J.K. Rowling, is perhaps the most popular set of novels of the modern era. With seven books and many successful films to its name, the series has gathered about 15 billion dollars in sales. How did the series become so popular? The reason can be broken down into several areas. The first book in the series was rejected 12 times before it was picked up by Bloomsbury—a small publisher in England. So receiving this contract was Rowling's first step to success. However, getting a book contract does not ensure the success of a book. The story was soon loved by children and adults alike. In light of this, Bloomsbury Publishing published a second version of the books with “adult” (less colorful and more boring) book covers. This made it easier for a full range of ages to enjoy the series.Another factor that worked like a charm was that the publisher and Rowling herself, through the books, conducted midnight releases, promotions, and pre-ordering more readers. Customers who feared that their local bookstore would run out of copies responded by pre-ordering over 700,000 copies before the July 8, 2000 release. What does the underlined word “releases” (Para. 3) mean?A. The activity that frees or expresses energy or emotion.B. The announcement about the book’s publishing information.C. The sales of books that is available only at midnight.
