I tried not to be biased, but I had my doubts about hiring Stevie. His social worker assured me that he would be a good, reliable busboy. But I had never had a mentally handicapped employee. He was short, a little fat with the smooth facial features and thick-tongued speech of Down’s Syndrome(唐氏综合症). I thought most of my customers would be uncomfortable around Stevie so I closely watched him for the first few weeks.I shouldn't have worried. After the first week, Stevie had my staff wrapped around his fat little finger, and within a month my regular truck customers had adopted him as their official truck stop mascot(吉祥物). After that, I really didn't care what the rest of the customers thought of him. He was like a 21-year-old in blue jeans and Nikes, eager to laugh and eager to please, but fierce in his attention to his duties. Every salt and pepper shaker was exactly in its place, not a coffee spill was visible when Stevie got done with the table. Our only problem was persuading him to wait to clean a table until after the customers were finished. Over time, we learned that he lived with his mother, a widow who was disabled after repeated surgeries for cancer. Money was tight, and what I paid him was probably the difference between them being able to live together and Stevie being sent to a group home. That's why the restaurant was a gloomy place that morning last August, the first morning in three years that Stevie missed work. He was at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester getting a heart surgery. His social worker said that people with Down’s Syndrome often have heart problems at an early age so this wasn't unexpected, and there was a good chance he would come through the surgery in good shape and be back at work in a few months.A ripple of excitement ran through the staff later that morning when word came that he was out of surgery, in recovery, and doing fine. Frannie, the head waitress, did a little dance when she heard the good news. Belle Ringer, one of our regular truck customers, stared at her and asked, "OK, Frannie, what was that all about?" "We just got word that Stevie is out of surgery and going to be okay." "I was wondering where he was. I had a new joke to tell him. What was the surgery about?"Frannie quickly told Belle Ringer and the other two drivers about Stevie's surgery, then sighed: "Yeah, I'm glad he is going to be OK," she said. "But I don't know how he and his Mom are going to handle all the bills. From what I hear, they're barely getting by as it is." Belle Ringer nodded thoughtfully, and Frannie hurried off to wait on the rest of her tables. After the morning rush, Frannie walked into my office. She had a couple of paper napkins in her hand and a funny look on her face."What's up?" I asked. "I cleared off that table where Belle Ringer and his friends were sitting after they left, and I found this was folded and put under a coffee cup."She handed the napkin to me, and three 20 bills fell onto my desk when I opened it. On the outside, in big, bold letters, was printed "Something For Stevie".That was three months ago. Today is Thanksgiving, the first day Stevie is supposed to be back to work. His social worker said he had been counting the days until the doctor said he could work. I arranged to have his mother bring him to work, met them in the parking lot and invited them both to celebrate his day back.I led them toward a large corner booth. I could feel and hear the rest of the staff following behind as we marched through the dining room. We stopped in front of the big table. Its surface was covered with coffee cups, and dinner plates, all sitting on dozens of folded paper napkins. "First thing you have to do, Stevie, is clean up this mess," I said. Stevie looked at me, and then at his mother, then pulled out one of the napkins. It had "Something for Stevie" printed on the outside. As he picked it up, two 10 bills fell onto the table. Stevie stared at the money, then at all the napkins peeking from beneath the tableware, each with his name printed on it. I turned to his mother. "There's more than 10,000 in cash and checks on that table, all from truckers and trucking companies that heard about your problems. "Happy Thanksgiving !"Well, it got really noisy about that time, with everybody hollering and shouting, and there were a few tears, as well. But you know what's funny? We all looked forward to this. What would people think of us For me, I hoped to be the hero of the class.I was not disappointed. All my classmates admired my experience, and I quickly became well known as “ the French guy. ” I was very popular for a time. However, I was not interested in many things my classmatesdid, and it was hard for me to connect with them. I enjoyed listening to classical music, never watchedTV, and almost never watched movies.I did not have a common background with my friends because I grew up in Europe. I had few friends, and fewer good friends. When I look back now, I realize I was a bit of an idiot to many people aroundme. I kept talking proudly about my experience. And I thought myself better than those around me becauseI lived in Europe but they didn't.I had decided I wanted better friends when my parents said that we were going to move again! I sawthis as a perfect chance to get better friends, where people did not know of my unkind past. When we moved to California, I did not show off as I had done for five years. I did not tell everyonethat I lived in Europe. I still listened to classical music, but I just kept my musicto myself. Sureenough, I found that people like someone who is not typical but does not boast about it.Nothing can replace good friends, and if I had to control my temper and pride, it waswell worth it.[短文大意]一个教训在欧洲生活了七年以后, 我父母决定搬到美国。 常用的提问形式有:细节:to the passage, which of the following is ( NOT ) Trueof the following statements is Not mentioned in passage …the passage, it can be seen that .main reason for ••• is. 推断:can be inferred from the passage that .the passage we can infer ( draw the conclusion ) that .is implied in the passage that .主旨: passage is mainly about .main idea of this passage is .passage mainly discusses .passage might be taken from .词汇或短语:word "…" in line (Paragraph …)..most probably means. paragraph …,the word "…" refers to (stands for ) . word "…" can be best replaced by.underlined word (phrase) " … "in paragraph really means. I first moved to the US, I was very popular because of my .appearance talents accent experiences

The January fashion show, called FutureFashion, exemplified how far green design has come. Organized by the New York-based nonprofit Earth Pledge, the show inspired many top designers to work with sustainable fabrics for the first time. Several have since made pledges to include organic fabrics in their lines. The designers who undertake green fashion still face many challenges. Scott Hahn, cofounder with Gregory of Rogan and Loomstate, which uses all-organic cotton, says high-quality sustainable materials can still be tough to find. “Most designers with existing labels are finding there aren’t comparable fabrics that can just replace what you’re doing and what your customers are used to,” he says. For example, organic cotton and non-organic cotton are virtually indistinguishable once woven into a dress. But some popular synthetics, like stretch nylon, still have few eco-friendly equivalents. Those who do make the switch are finding they have more support. Last year the influential trade show Designers & Agents stopped charging its participation fee for young green entrepreneurs (企业家) who attend its two springtime shows in Los Angeles and New York and gave special recognition to designers whose collections are at least 25% sustainable. It now counts more than 50 green designers, up from fewer than a dozen two years ago. This week Wal-Mart is set to announce a major initiative aimed at helping cotton farmers go organic: it will buy transitional (过渡型的) cotton at higher prices, thus helping to expand the supply of a key sustainable material. “Mainstream is about to occur,” says Hahn. Some analysts (分析师) are less sure. Among consumers, only 18%are even aware that ecofashion exists, up from 6% four years ago. Natalie Hormilla, a fashion writer, is an example of the unconverted consumer. When asked if she owned any sustainable clothes, she replied: “Not that I’m aware of.” Like most consumers, she finds little time to shop, and when she does, she’s on the hunt for “cute stuff that isn’t too expensive.” By her own admission, green just isn’t yet on her mind. But—thanks to the combined efforts of designers, retailers and suppliers—one day it will be.1 What is said about FutureFashion?A It inspired many leading designers to start going green.B It showed that designers using organic fabrics would go far.C It served as an example of how fashion shows should be organized.D It convinced the public that fashionable clothes should be made durable.2 According to Scott Hahn, one big challenge to designers who will go organic is that ____ .A much more time is needed to finish a dress using sustainable materialsB they have to create new brands for clothes made of organic materialsC customers have difficulty telling organic from non-organic materialsD quality organic replacements for synthetics are not readily available3 We learn from Paragraph 3 that designers who undertake green fashion ____ .A can attend various trade shows freeB are readily recognized by the fashion worldC can buy organic cotton at favorable pricesD are gaining more and more support4 What is Natalie Hormilla’s attitude toward ecofashion?A She doesn’t seem to care about it.B She doesn’t think it is sustainable.C She is doubtful of its practical value.D She is very much opposed to the idea.5 What does the author think of green fashion?A Green products will soon go mainstream.B It has a very promising future.C Consumers have the final say.D It will appeal more to young people.

The vast majority of job advertisements call for "good communication skills." It is a term that is used regularly in the workplace, yet very few people understand this expression in full. Communication is interaction and is vital in business, perhaps more so than anywhere else. Communication is the thing that ensures smooth operation between staff members, employers and clients. Employers need to use excellent communication skills in order to get the very best out of their employees. Employees need to use communication skills when talking to clients as well as colleagues and employers. Communication doesn't always refer to conversation. There are many ways in which you will need to communicate whilst at work. Written communication is often forgotten about when applying for a job. Your application letter, for example, is a form of communication. This is why it is so important that it is well written and correct in grammar. At some point when working in an office environment, you will most likely have to write emails and/or letters. You should ensure that these always look and sound professional. Another form of communication is that between employees. Regardless of how good you are at your job, if you don't form at least basic relationships with those around you, it will ultimately affect your success. Bad communication leads to misunderstandings. Many employers organize social events to encourage good communication between staff members. In order for companies to succeed, communication between them and their clients has to be perfect. To ensure that business continues to flow, a company's clients have to be able to trust them implicitly. This can never be the case if there is any miscommunication. Many companies decide that it is a good idea to hire a Head of Communication. This person will be the sole point of contact for all clients. This removes any opportunity for misunderstanding as all communication runs through one person. In conclusion, communication in the workplace is a key element of any company. It ensures the smooth running of the day-to-day business and guarantees that employees feel happy and secure.1. Why is it especially important to master the communication skills in business?A) It is helpful for employers to know their employees.B) It is vital for constructing the harmonious relationship.C) It ensures the smooth operation between people concerned. D) It guarantees employees' constant improvement in business.2. Employers are advised to master excellent communication skills so that they ________.A) can make their employees more qualifiedB) can make their employees more sociableC) can make the best use of their employees D) can make the best use of their clients3. In an office environment, what will eventually influence employees' success?A) Written communication skills.B) Language competence and performance.C) The good relationship with their clients.D) The basic relationship with others around them. 4. How do many employers encourage good communication between staff members?A) By organizing social events. B) By raising the staff benefits.C) By trusting them implicitly.D) By offering them training programs.5. The increase in international business and in foreign investment has created a need for executives with knowledge of foreign languages and skills in cross-cultural communication. Americans, however, have not been well trained in either area and, consequently, have not enjoyed the same level of success in negotiation in an international arena as have their foreign counterparts. Negotiating is the process of communicating back and forth for the purpose of reaching an agreement. It involves persuasion and compromise, but in order to participate in either one, the negotiators must understand the ways in which people are persuaded and how compromise is reached within the culture of the negotiation. In many international business negotiations abroad, Americans are perceived as wealthy and impersonal. It often appears to the foreign negotiator that the American represents a large multi-million-dollar corporation that can afford to pay the price without bargaining further. The American negotiator’s role becomes that of an impersonal supplier of information and cash. In studies of American negotiators abroad, several traits have been identified that may serve to confirm this stereotypical perception, while undermining the negotiator’s position. Two traits in particular that cause cross-cultural misunderstanding are directness and impatience on the part of the American negotiator. Furthermore, American negotiators often insist on realizing short-term goals. Foreign negotiators, on the other hand, may value the relationship established between negotiators and may be willing to invest time in it for long-term benefits. In order to solidify the relationship, they may opt for indirect interactions without regard for the time involved in getting to know the other negotiator. Clearly, perceptions and differences in values affect the outcomes of negotiations and the success of negotiators. For Americans to play a more effective role in international business negotiations, they must put forth more effort to improve cross-cultural understanding. The Harry Potter series, written by J.K. Rowling, is perhaps the most popular set of novels of the modern era. With seven books and many successful films to its name, the series has gathered about 15 billion dollars in sales. How did the series become so popular? The reason can be broken down into several areas. The first book in the series was rejected 12 times before it was picked up by Bloomsbury—a small publisher in England. So receiving this contract was Rowling's first step to success. However, getting a book contract does not ensure the success of a book. The story was soon loved by children and adults alike. In light of this, Bloomsbury Publishing published a second version of the books with “adult” (less colorful and more boring) book covers. This made it easier for a full range of ages to enjoy the series.Another factor that worked like a charm was that the publisher and Rowling herself, through the books, conducted midnight releases, promotions, and pre-ordering more readers. Customers who feared that their local bookstore would run out of copies responded by pre-ordering over 700,000 copies before the July 8, 2000 release. What does the underlined word “releases” (Para. 3) mean?A. The activity that frees or expresses energy or emotion.B. The announcement about the book’s publishing information.C. The sales of books that is available only at midnight.

Hot pot's origins can be found in the dining practices of Mongolian horsemen who rode across the steppe and into northern China. Legend has it that the Mongols used their helmets as pots to simmer (炖) broth (汤底) over open fires, and cooked chunks of meat in the broth.Hot pot cooking seems to have spread to northern China during the Tang Dynasty. In the regional variations developed with different ingredients such as seafood. In the centuries that witnessed the growth of the Song Dynasty, hot pot moved — and changed — further south, with each successive region adapting it to their local ingredients and tastes. The ingredients in a hot pot vary a lot from region to region. Perhaps the most famous hot pot is the Chongqing or Sichuan hot pot. It features a dark red broth chock-full (塞满了的) of spices, chili peppers, and the uniquely mouth-numbing Sichuan peppers. In Beijing and elsewhere in the north, hot pot broth tends to be mild and, compared to its racy southern "cousins", a little light. In the northeast of China, a kind of local sauerkraut (酸菜) is used to add some tang (强烈的味道), making the broth a bit sour. People can choose a version of hot pot according to their taste.1 Hot pot is believed to date back more than 1,000 years to the time of _______.A. the Jin Dynasty B. the Tang DynastyC. the Song Dynasty D. the Yuan Dynasty
