Kindle Killers? The Boom in New E-Readers A. Amazon, the online retailing giant, did more than any other company to turn the sale of digital books into a real business with the 2007 launch of the Kindle electronic reader. The company has sold an estimated 1.7 million units of the hand held device in the US, and it#39;s getting ready to ship millions more. On Oct.6, Amazon announced that it would soon begin selling Kindles -- complete with a key feature that allows users to wirelessly download e-books from Amazon -- in more than 100 countries. B. Success breeds imitators. Amazon is about to be attacked by a squadron of would-be Kindle killers being brought to market by some of the biggest names in consumer electronics and publishing. To complicate the increasingly competitive landscape even further, Apple and, according to rumor, Microsoft are working on tablet computers that could prove to be handy e-readers but with more functions and features, such as video display capability and full web browsers. quot;2009 is a breakout year fore-readers,quot; says Sarah Rotman Epps, an analyst with Forrester Research.quot; But we#39;re still in the early stages.quot; C. The early stages have lasted a longtime. E-readers have been around for more than a decade, but the devices weren#39;t popular due to high cost, proprietary (专利的) display formats and the reluctance of book publishers to sell digital versions of their best-selling titles. Now, just as digital music was driven into the mainstream by Apple#39;s iPod and iTunes, Amazon#39;s Kindle andonline bookstore, which sells more than 350,000 titles, are proving there#39;s amass market for e-books. Total industry revenue from digital-book downloads has risen 149% this year, according to the Association of American Publishers, while e-reader sales are expected to reach 3 million by Dec.31, according to For rester Research. Almost a million of the devices could be sold during the upcoming holiday season alone. In 2010, sales are projected to double, to 6 million. That kind of growth is hard to come by in the recession-wracked technology industry, and a crowd is starting to gather. Around the world, at least 17 e-readers are in development or already on the market. D. Among the better-known entrants is Asustek -- the Taiwanese company of China practically invented the netbook category with its ASUS Eee-PC, and it is working on a product called the Eee-reader that it hopes to have on the market in time for Christmas. South Korea#39;s two powerhouse consumer-electronics companies, Samsung and LG Electronics, are wading in too. Samsung earlier this year introduced a reader called the Papyrus in South Korea; reports circulating in the technology blogosphere say LG is developing a prototype with a large,11.5- inch (diagonal) flexible screen. Meanwhile, Japan#39;s Fujitsu has released the world#39;s first dedicated e-reader with a colour screen, although so far the device is only available in Japan. E. It isn#39;t just tech companies that are joining the fray. Bricks-and-mortar bookseller Barnes Noble, which in the US offers access to 750,000 e-books on its website, is rumored to be pondering the development of its own e-reader to rival the Kindle. (The retailer already has a partnership to sell e-readers made by IREX, a spin-off of Holland#39;s Royal Philips Electronics.) Major newspaper and magazine publishers, which are suffering mightily from the loss of subscribers and advertisers to the recession and the Internet, are also getting involved. News Corp. chairman and CEO Rupert Murdoch, owner of The Wall Street Journal, is reportedly considering a deal with Japanese consumer-electronics giant Sony, which in 2004 introduced the first commercially viable e-reader, to use a black-and-white display technology called electronic ink (also used by the Kindle. Sony is rolling out a new family of e-readers, including a pocket- size version and one with a large screen that#39;s geared toward newspapers and magazines. F. One reason e-readers are getting traction is that competition is driving down prices. Amazon has cut the price of the Kindle by 100 over the past six months, to 259. As e-readers proliferate(激增) and price disparities narrow, manufacturers are trying to differentiate their products by adding features such as MP3 players and touch screens. The eSlick by Foxit, based in Fremont, Calif., allows users to listen to songs while reading .Asustek recently unveiled a prototype e-reader with two screens, which would more closely duplicate the traditional reading experience, although the devicethat the company expects to release later this year will have a single screen. G. At the same time, new display technologies are emerging that promise to improve battery life and make devices more portable and easier to read. UK-based Plastic Logic hopes to introduce nextyear the first e-reader with a plastic screen that will reduce glare and be less prone to cracking when dropped by ham-fisted owners. Electronic-ink technology is set to move from black and white to colour by the end of 2010.Even video is on the horizon. quot;We#39;ll see a range of models start to appear over the first half of 2010 offering a range of different reading and productivity experiences, quot; says Neil Jones, CEO of UK-based In teread, which in May launched a 249 e-reader called the COOL-ER. H. Newcomers will have a hard time breaking Amazon#39;s chokehold in the US, where the company controls 60% of the e-reader market, according to Forrester Research. But the edge Amazon gained when it launchedthe Kindle could be blunted by evolving technology and changing consumer needs.Currently, more people read e-books on their smart phones than they do on dedicated devices like e-readers. I. And there#39;s the looming threat posed by next-generation tablet computers. Apple, the king of cool handheld devices, is rumored to be readying a tablet computer with all the functions of a laptop aswell as iPhone-like touch capabilities for release early next year. Microsoft has been secretive about its plans for a tablet, but a video making the rounds of the blogosphere shows a dual-LCD-screen prototype that closes like a book.quot;E-readers are a transitional technology, quot; says Rotman Epps of Forrester Research. It means that just as the e-reader is taking off, it may be becoming obsolete.1.[选词填空]Now e-readers are easier to carry andread thanks to the emergence of new display technologies.2.[选词填空]According to the passage, soon afterOct.6, users of Kindles can download e-books from Amazon wirelessly.3.[选词填空]According to the author, to sell 6million e-readers in 2010 is unlikely.4.[选词填空]The e-reader geared to News Corp. willuse the same display technology as the Kindle.5.[选词填空]As technology develops and consumerneeds change, the advantage the Kindle gave Amazon could no longer exist.6.[选词填空]The tablet computer which Microsoft is developingis said to be more powerful than e-readers.7.[选词填空]Manufacturers are adding features suchas touch screens, to distinguish their e-readers from their rivals#39;.8.[选词填空]We can learn from the passage thatAmazon released an electronic reader named Kindle in 2007.9.[选词填空]One of the reasons e-readers were not popular in the past is that publishers were unwilling to sell digital versions of their best-sellers.10.[选词填空]Eee-reader is developed by aTaiwan-based company.
Britons are allowing to let their manners slip, researchers claim. More than 8 out of 10 passengers refuse to give up their seats on the bus, train or tube, a survey by health care provider Simplyhealth said. Around half of workers do not make cups of tea for colleagues while 86 percent of the nation do not offer to carry bags for others, it was claimed. According to the survey of more than 1,000 adults, the main causes of people not bothering were lack of time and much stress at work. Jamie Wilson of Simplyhealth said: "Committing just half an hour a month to helping someone else can make a real difference to your life as well as theirs. As a health care provider, we encourage our staff to get active in the community supporting others—in fact we give 100 days a year to staff to spend a day helping at a charity of their choice." Mental health expert Dr. Christian Jessen said: "We all know that helping others is of benefit to them, but many people don't realise that getting active to help others can also improve your mental and physical well-being. Simple activities like walking the neighbor's dog or helping in the garden help to lose some weight and improve general fitness, leading to a healthier, happier nation."1.What's the main cause for modern Britons' declining manners?A) Improved national well-being.B) Indifference between neighbours.C) Limited time and more stress.D) Change of the lifestyle.2.According to the passage, how much time does Simplyhealth allow its staff to spend helping others?A) Half an hour a day.B) Half an hour a month.C) One day a year.D) 100 days a year.3.What is the main idea of the passage?A) The modern Britons' well-being declines.B) The nation calls for more volunteers.C) Experts urge people to be nice.D) Helping others makes people healthier.

I could not resist the habit I had at home, so I fell asleep right at my desk. I woke up to find myself not in the classroom but carried on Dad’s back. We were halfway home. It was the last time I felt close to him. After that, he never carried me or hugged me as other fathers did to their children. I was not bothered much by this thought. I was proud of it, for I felt independent and “grown up.” However, there were times when I felt depressed by not having sought comfort from him.One day, I was writing Chinese characters as homework. I hated doing this more than anything. Dad came and stood behind me for a moment, watching me scratching the paper. Then he said, “This kind of writing needs patience. Your writing is not strong enough. Press harder.”I follow his advice for the next two words, but as I could see little improvement, I followed my own method----the fast way. His advice did not improve my writing but our relationship. As I grew older, I found out that he had finished his schooling in Grade 6, which was the highest grade in the town then, so he was considered to be a scholar. People used to ask him to write something to put on the walls, but he never felt very useful. He often said to me, “As you can see, this family is going to count on you. We are useless to improve you anything for your future. You have to get an education to change the life for yourself.” As a result of his expectation, I have made it through high school and through college.21. What was the author’s purpose in writing this passage? A. to introduce her father. B. to demonstrate people her attitude toward life. C. to encourage people to follow their fathers’ suggestions. D. to show what matters to her personal development.BHave you ever intended to be fully absorbed in your work but found yourself distracted (走神) by e-mail, the Internet and other things throughout the day? According to the survey made by a famous university in the USA, most people have the experience.“People often lose their concentration when they are bored, of course, but also when they are engaged in challenging tasks,” says Peter Bregman, the head of the survey. “They sometimes have a feeling to escape from what’s difficult or boring, so they jump out,” he says. The part of the brain devoted to attention is connected to the brain’s emotional center. Any strong emotion —quarrels with colleagues, problems at home —can interrupt our attention. Studies over the last decade have shown that too much work to do at a time can easily lead to distraction.Refocusing is hard for many people. Robert Epstein suggests the following, “Stop and listen to some soft music for a few minutes. Find a good friend or a teacher and say out your matter on your mind. Go for a short walk or take a deep breath, where you breathe in deeply, count to five slowly, hold it and breathe out very slowly. This can blow out all the tension and the unwanted in your mind to restore your focus.”Take more control by structuring your time and becoming more aware of your behaviors.“Setting the phone alarm to go off every hour is my way of creating awareness,”Mr. Bregman says.“You have to inform yourself that you’ve lost focus in order to do something about it.” Starting the day with a to-do list is also important, such as when to eat, when to go to the gym or take a walk. But if it’s overly ambitious, you will pu t yourself in a state of anxiety, which makes it hard for the brain to concentrate. “Choosing three or four things as your priority (优先) for the day allows your brain to settle down and focus,” he says.25. According to the passage, which is NOT the reason why some people can be distracted from their work? A. They don’t want to be devoted to their work. B. They are disturbed by the Internet and other things. C. They can’t find interest in their work. D. They feel their work is too hard for them.26. Which incident might not interrupt your attention? A. Run around the playground for some time. D. Take a breath from time to time.28. What’s the meaning of the underlined word “restore”in the passage? A. recover B. reform C. release D. reactCDoes stress cause gray hair? Many people believe that tension and stress can cause your hair to lose its color. In fact,it is an old wives tale that being upset all the time can result in premature graying. Here is a closer look at this situation and why some believe that this old wives tale could be true.As one ages, the hairs on the head also age.In fact, just about everything on the human body begins to show signs of wear and tear after a while. The joints wear and become stiff and skin wears and becomes wrinkled.Hairs on the head grow and eventually die. They are replaced, but in the process something else happens. When new hairs are replaced, the color or pigment(色素)is also added to them. However,as one ages, this pigment becomes less and less available. At first, hairs will have a limited amount of pigment and they will appear to be grayish in color. In time, they will lose all of their pigment and will be white. Many things are known to cause graying.and genetics is a very powerful factor. If one of your parents turns gray at an early age, there is a good chance that you will too. Some people begin the graying process in high school, while others may be over the age of forty.Constant worry and tension can have many harmful effects on the human body.It is a known fact that stressful times can cause one to suffer hair loss.It would make sense that if it can cause these problems, perhaps it also may contribute to graying. However, there is no sound evidence to support this.On the other hand, many medical professionals believe that there may be a link:between graying and a constant state of anxiety or tension.Does stress cause gray hair? There is no scientific evidence to support the theory, but it is best to avoid stressful situations.29.The underlined phrase in the first paragraph most probably means _____________ .A.clever remarks B.silly remarksC.exciting remarks D.disappointed remarks30.The second paragraph mainly tells us_____________ .A.every part of body is replaced with age B.hairs will grow weak but not dieC.skin becomes wrinkled with age D.every part of body ages with age31.From the passage we can infer that _____________ .A.stress causing gray hair is still in questionB.gray hair has nothing to do with tension.C.stressful situations can be of benefit.D.sound evidence has been found.32.What might play the most important role in the graying process?A.Genetics and the amount of sleeping timeB.The amount of food people eat and living environmentC.The amount of pigment and geneticsD.Genetics and the amount of water people drinkDOur warming planet is expected to face serious water crisis(危机)in the coming decades — which means each nation’s natural resource will be more important than ever. Passage OneQuestions 52 to 56 are based on the following passage.Amid all the job losses, there’s no category of worker that the economic disruption has been good for: nonhumans. From self-service checkout lines at supermarket to industrial robots armed with saws and taught to carve up animal bodies in slaughter-houses, these ever-more-intelligent machines are now not just assisting workers but actually kicking them out of their jobs.Automation isn’t just affecting factory workers, either. Some law firms now use artificial intelligence software to scan and read mountains of legal documents. work that previously was performed by highly-paid human lawyers."Robots continue to have an impact on blue-collar jobs, and white-collar jobs are under attack by microprocessors," says economics professor Edward Learner. The recession permanently wiped out 2.5 million jobs. US gross domestic product has climbed back to pre-recession levels, meaning we’re producing as much as before, only with 6% fewer workers. To be sure, robotics are not the only job killers Out there, with outsourcing(外包)stealing far more jobs than automation.Jeff Burnstein, president of the Robotics Industry Association, argues that robots actually save US jobs. His logic: companies that embrace automation might use fewer workers, but that’s still better than firing everyone and moving the work overseas. It’s not that robots are cheaper than humans, though often they are. It’s that they’re better. "In some cases the quality requirements are so exacting that even if you wanted to have a human do the job, you couldn’t." Burnstein says.Same goes for surgeons, who’re using robotic systems to perform an ever-growing list of operations- not because the machines save money but because, thanks to the greater precision of robots, the patients recover in less time and have fewer complications, says Dr. Myriam Curet.Surgeons may survive the robot invasion, but others at the hospital might not be so lucky. as iRobot, maker of the Roomba, a robot vacuum cleaner, has been showing off Ava, which could be used as a messenger in a hospital. And once you’re home, recovering, Ava could let you talk to your doctor, so there’s no need to send someone to your house. That "mobile telepresence" could be useful at the office. If you’re away on a trip, you can still attend a meeting. Just connect via videoconferencing software, so your face appears on Ava’s screen. Is any job safe I was hoping to say" journalist," but researchers are already developing software that can gather facts and write a news story. Which means that a few years from now, a robot could be writing this column. And who will read it Well, there might be a lot of us hanging around with lots of free time on our hands. What caused the greatest loss of jobs in America A. Using microprocessors extensively.B. Moving production to other countries.C. The bankruptcy of many companiesD. The invasion of migrant workers.

We have saved as a final set of emotions the two most important emotions pertaining to other people: love and its opposite, hate. Love can be seen everywhere. Yet surprisingly, love has been the subject of less scientific research than other emotions, such as anger and fear. The reason for this may be twofold. First, love is a very complex emotion, difficult to describe and measure. Secondly, unlike many extreme emotions, extreme love is generally not a problem; thus less medical attention has been paid to it. What is love? This is a complex question and requires a complex answer. Love is an enduring, strong, positive attraction and feeling for another person or thing. But it is more than this. It also involves feelings of caring, protection, excitement, and tenderness. When two people are in love, they feel drawn to one another; they greatly enjoy each other's company; and they may be sexually attracted to one another. Sometimes it is easier to think in term of different kinds of love: “puppy” love, romantic love, brotherly love, and so forth. Though they differ in some respects, they share one important characteristic: a strong positive feeling toward another. Our feeling toward other people are often complex. We may love someone and, at the same time, be angry with him. Or we may love someone, even though we are jealous of him. We might even love someone and, at the same time, hate him for some specific reason. Hate is a strong negative emotion toward someone, and is due to anger, jealousy, or some other factor. Like love, hate can be a very strong emotion. It can also be very dangerous. The question is often asked, “Is it bad to hate?” The best answer is probably “sometimes yes and sometimes no.” Usually hate does not help us; it makes us feel unhappy and makes us do things that may hurt others. However, sometimes it may be necessary to hate and hurt someone in order to protect loved ones. 1. In the parts previous to the passage you've just read, the author has probably been discussing A. the two most important human emotions—love and hate B. some emotions that are only produced by animals C. some other sots of human emotions than of love and hate D. none of the above 2. A. it is too common to be talked about B. compared with other kinds of emotions, love is not so important C. the study of love needs great effort and advanced scientific research D. love is harmless and too complex for description 3. When two people are in love, they A. will never be angry with or hate each other B. are strongly attracted to each other C. will not be jealous of each other D. tend to do all of the above 4. The increase in international business and in foreign investment has created a need for executives with knowledge of foreign languages and skills in cross-cultural communication. Americans, however, have not been well trained in either area and, consequently, have not enjoyed the same level of success in negotiation in an international arena as have their foreign counterparts. Negotiating is the process of communicating back and forth for the purpose of reaching an agreement. It involves persuasion and compromise, but in order to participate in either one, the negotiators must understand the ways in which people are persuaded and how compromise is reached within the culture of the negotiation. In many international business negotiations abroad, Americans are perceived as wealthy and impersonal. It often appears to the foreign negotiator that the American represents a large multi-million-dollar corporation that can afford to pay the price without bargaining further. The American negotiator’s role becomes that of an impersonal supplier of information and cash. In studies of American negotiators abroad, several traits have been identified that may serve to confirm this stereotypical perception, while undermining the negotiator’s position. Two traits in particular that cause cross-cultural misunderstanding are directness and impatience on the part of the American negotiator. Furthermore, American negotiators often insist on realizing short-term goals. Foreign negotiators, on the other hand, may value the relationship established between negotiators and may be willing to invest time in it for long-term benefits. In order to solidify the relationship, they may opt for indirect interactions without regard for the time involved in getting to know the other negotiator. Clearly, perceptions and differences in values affect the outcomes of negotiations and the success of negotiators. For Americans to play a more effective role in international business negotiations, they must put forth more effort to improve cross-cultural understanding. [共5题](1)What kind of manager is needed in present international business and foreign investment? [本题2分]A. The man who represents a large multi-million-dollar corporation. B. The man with knowledge of foreign languages and skills in cross-cultural communication. C. The man who is wealthy and impersonal. D. The man who can negotiate with his foreign counterparts.
The Harry Potter series, written by J.K. Rowling, is perhaps the most popular set of novels of the modern era. With seven books and many successful films to its name, the series has gathered about 15 billion dollars in sales. How did the series become so popular? The reason can be broken down into several areas. The first book in the series was rejected 12 times before it was picked up by Bloomsbury—a small publisher in England. So receiving this contract was Rowling's first step to success. However, getting a book contract does not ensure the success of a book. The story was soon loved by children and adults alike. In light of this, Bloomsbury Publishing published a second version of the books with “adult” (less colorful and more boring) book covers. This made it easier for a full range of ages to enjoy the series.Another factor that worked like a charm was that the publisher and Rowling herself, through the books, conducted midnight releases, promotions, and pre-ordering more readers. Customers who feared that their local bookstore would run out of copies responded by pre-ordering over 700,000 copies before the July 8, 2000 release. What does the underlined word “releases” (Para. 3) mean?A. The activity that frees or expresses energy or emotion.B. The announcement about the book’s publishing information.C. The sales of books that is available only at midnight.
Most children with healthy appetites are ready to eat almost anything that is offered them and a child rarely dislikes food (51) it is badly cooked. The way a meal is cooked and served is most important and an (52) served meal will often improve a child’s appetite. If the father says he hates fat meat or the mother refuses vegetables in the child’s hearing he is (54) to copy this procedure. Take it (55) granted that he likes everything and he probably will. Nothing healthful should be omitted from the meal because of a (56) dislike. At meal times it is a good idea to give a child a small portion and let him (57) back for a second helping rather than give him as much as he is likely to eat all at once. Do not talk too much to the child (58) meal times, but let him get on with his food, and do not allow him to leave the table immediately after a meal or he will soon learn to swallow his food (59) he can hurry back to his toys. Americans experience more food recalls (召回) today than they did five years ago, especially when it comes to meat and poultry (家禽). Meat and poultry recalls increased by two-thirds from 2013 to 2018, while food recalls overall went up 10%, according to the report recently published by the U.S. Public Interest Research Group.Meanwhile, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates (估计) 48 million people get sick, 128,000 are hospitalized and 3,000 die from food-borne disease each year in the U.S. "We are looking for the farm-to-fork preventative solutions," said Adam Garber, the research group's consumer watchdog. "By doing that, we can protect people's health."Over the five-year period, poultry posted the most recalls (168), followed by beef (137) and pork (128). The report shows the most serious meat recalls are on the rise. Among meat and poultry, the number of Class I recalls has increased by 83%, nearly doubling. Class I, the most serious of the recalls, is issued when there is a reasonable probability that the food will cause health problems or death.53. When would Class I recalls be issued?A.
