阅读理解 Mr and Mrs Brown were going abroad for their holiday. They had a dog called Blackie which they were very fond of, but they could not take him abroad with them, so they looked for a good place to leave him in while they were away, and at last found a place which looked after dogs very well while their owners were away. They took Blackie there just before they left for their holiday, and sadly said good-bye to him. At the end of their holiday, they got back to England very late at night, and as they thought that the place where Blackie was staying might be closed at that hour, they decided to wait until the next morning before going to get him back. So the next morning Mr Brown got into his car and drove off happily to collect Blackie. When he reached home with the dog, he said to his wife. “Do you know, dear, I don't think Blackie can have enjoyed his stay at that place very much. He barked (吠叫) all the way home in the car as if he wanted to tell me something.” Mrs Brown looked at the dog carefully and then answered. “You are quite right, dear. If you want to launch your own business or take your current business to the next level, it's crucial to strengthen your brand identity. For brands like Li-Ning, the mere sight of the name of the famous gymnast immediately reminds people of the brand's corporate identity. It takes years in some cases, but effective brand management can speed up the growth of your business. Know who you are and what you stand for. Sit down and figure out exactly what your business objectives are, whom you are targeting at, and what your brand stands for. For example, Rolls-Royce is famous for its high-end (高端)automobiles. Know what your brand represents to consumers, and what your target market is so as to avoid confusion. Come up with a catchy name and logo. Because people's attention spans are short and the market is full of eye-catching brands, it is crucial to make a lasting impression very quickly with your company name or slogan. Think about some of the more memorable company brands, such as Subway's highly successful "Eat Fresh" sandwiches, and you'll see that they were brief and made an immediate but lasting impression. Get your brand message out there. It is important to distinguish yourself from your competitors and make sure that you are not forgotten. So try to take advantage of every meaningful opportunity to get your brand's name into the public sphere, such as marketing, networking and so on. According to the passage ______ will speed up the growth of your business. A. Strong corporate identitiesB. TrademarksC. Effective brand managementD. Brand identity In order to avoid confusion, the author suggests you ______ A. know your competitors wellB. create a high-end productC. know what your target is and what your brand stands for

Think out-of-the-box British physician, author, inventor, and consultant Edward de Bono has had a major impact on the way we think and particularly in the field of creativity. He coined the phrase "lateral thinking" (水平思考)which involves approaching problems from diverse, unexpected angles and from different perspectives. Dr. de Bono meant to differentiate lateral thinking―in which you push the mind to make sudden turns―from vertical thinking, which is logical and sequential thinking. Lateral thinking can be learned, and Dr. de Bono has created several techniques to help you apply lateral thinking to problem solving and idea generation. Some of these are the following i think of as many different alternatives for solving a problem as you possibly can; challenge any assumptions you may have about your problem; and insert random elements which will encourage you to look at the problem from a different and unexpected perspective.Challenge your assumptions Assumptions are mental shortcuts: we assume that a situation we’re facing is like other situations we’ve encountered before, and that what worked then will work once again. In fact, the more experienced we are in a particular area, the more likely we are to bring lots of baggage to the problem, which can inhibit us from finding novel and creative solutions. In order to challenge your assumptions, write down all of the dominant ideas that apply to a particular situation and then deliberately challenge them. List all of the assumptions that you’re making and next to each one write a counter-assumption―not necessarily its negation, but its opposite. Once you drop preconceived notions you’re more likely to find better solutions. One approach―suggested by Jurgen Wolff on his blog Time to Write―is to pretend that you’re a Martian(火星人) that has just landed on earth and is seeing things on this planet for the first time. This would put you in a position of questioning everything, seeing your problem or situation with completely fresh eyes, and taking nothing for granted.Introduce random elements Selecting a random element that has absolutely no connection to the problem at hand provides an unexpected entry point to the problem so that you can face it from a unique angle. I’ve mentioned using a random word as an initial stimulus on this blog before. De Bono explains that the brain is so good at making connections that it will find a way to connect the random word to the problem at hand, no matter how remote the word may seem. Take a word from a random word generator―or open the dictionary to a random page and select a word― extract its underlying principles, and then apply them to your problem. Be careful not to discard a specific word because you simply conclude that it’s of no use and then getting another word instead. If you do this you’re probably just looking for a word that would neatly fit the problem you’re trying to solve. Instead of a word, you can also use a picture as the random element or even an object. In addition, the random element that you introduce can be a "false rule". Basically, you take a rule, quote, idea or suggestion from somewhere else and apply it to your own situation. How does applying the "false rule" to your problem make you see it differently What new elements does it introduce How does it shift your perception of the problem Does the general principle of the rule also apply to your problem The general principle of the random input, whether it’s a word, picture, object or false rule, is to open up new lines of thinking. If you’re stuck and have run out of ideas during the creative thinking process, try a random element to help you find a starting point. Two lateral thinking puzzles Here are two lateral thinking puzzles for you to try and resolve (the answers are provided below, but make an effort to resolve the problems before looking at the answer) 1. Acting on an anonymous phone call, the police raid a house to arrest a suspected murderer. They don’t know what he looks like, but they know his name is John. Inside they find a carpenter, a taxi driver, a car mechanic and a fireman playing cards. Without even asking his name, they immediately arrest the fireman. How do they know they’ve got their man 2. A murderer is condemned to death. He has to choose between three rooms. The first is full of raging fires, the second is full of assassins(刺客) with loaded guns, and the third is full of lions that haven’t eaten in 3 years. Which room is safest for him Solutions to the two lateral thinking problems above The solution to the first problem above is that there was only one man sitting at the table; the other three, the carpenter, the taxi driver, and the mechanic were women. As for the second problem, the safest room is the third. Lions that haven’t eaten in three years are dead.Lesson in lateral thinking Edward de Bono tells the story of a farmer in a small Indian village who owed lots of money to the village moneylender and did not have the means to pay it back. The moneylender was old and ugly and was attracted to the farmer’s beautiful young daughter. The devious moneylender proposed the following: he would pick up two pebbles from the road―one black and one white―and put them in a bag. The girl would then put her hand in the bag and take out a pebble. If she took out the black pebble, she had to marry the moneylender and her father’s debt would be forgiven. If she took out the white pebble, she didn’t have to marry the moneylender and her father’s debt would still be forgiven. If she refused to take out a pebble her father would be put in jail. As the moneylender bent down to pick up the pebbles from the road, the girl noticed that he picked up two black pebbles and put them in the bag. What should she do If you’re using logical thinking you would probably conclude that the girl should show that there were two black pebbles in the bag and expose the moneylender as a cheat. However, what the girl did was to put her hand in the bag and take out a pebble. She then pretended to stumble and let the pebble fall onto the pebble-strewn path where it immediately became lost among all the other pebbles. "Oh, how clumsy of me," she said, "But never mind, if you look into the bag for the one that’s left, you will be able to tell which pebble I picked." Obviously, since the pebble that was left in the bag was black, then she must have picked the white pebble. Since the moneylender couldn’t admit what he had done, the girl effectively turned what looked like an impossible situation into an advantage. Conclusion While logic is concerned with "truth" and "what is", lateral thinking is concerned with "possibilities" and "what could be". You can train your mind to automatically approach situations from different angles and perspectives. One way to this is by solving lateral thinking puzzles, which demand an open mind and a creative approach.Once you can’t see any use out of the word you take at random, ______. A.try to take another random wordB.keep trying to connect it to the present problemC.look for a proper word to your problemD.replace the word with a picture or an object at once
Working from home comes with some additional benefits. You enjoy a better work-life balance, don't have to commute to the office and get to work in casual clothes if you want. Designing your home office space can produce a positive effect, too—if you're not stuck in a crowded room all day. Here are two ideas to help you design the ultimate home office.Choose your color. While some people like bright colors, you might not want to see yellow or green every day. Paint your office walls in a neutral(淡雅的) color to give your eyes a break. You should also avoid darker colors, which tend to make small spaces feel even smaller. This doesn't mean your home office needs to be completely neutral. Add something like a framed art.Play with natural light. You might push your desk into a dark corner, creating an office cubicle(隔间). Working in a small space can make your home office feel much more oppressive than it needs to be.Instead, look for areas where natural light flows in your home. Move your desk close to windows while keeping it parallel to them to reduce glare(刺眼的光). You can also add curtains to help you manage the amount of light that enters your workspace each day, particularly around lunch time.31. According to the first paragraph, if you work from home, you can ______.A. wear informally.B. earn more money.C. work more efficiently.D. concentrate on your work.32. The writer believes that designing one's home office space can ______.A. increase the room size.B. create a positive effect.C. make it look professional.D. attract more customers.33. Why are you advised not to use darker colors when designing your office space?A. They can create a dull atmosphere.B. They may easily make you feel depressed.C. They do not match your office desk and chair.D. They are likely to make your space look smaller.

The Harry Potter series, written by J.K. Rowling, is perhaps the most popular set of novels of the modern era. With seven books and many successful films to its name, the series has gathered about 15 billion dollars in sales. How did the series become so popular? The reason can be broken down into several areas. The first book in the series was rejected 12 times before it was picked up by Bloomsbury—a small publisher in England. So receiving this contract was Rowling's first step to success. However, getting a book contract does not ensure the success of a book. The story was soon loved by children and adults alike. In light of this, Bloomsbury Publishing published a second version of the books with “adult” (less colorful and more boring) book covers. This made it easier for a full range of ages to enjoy the series.Another factor that worked like a charm was that the publisher and Rowling herself, through the books, conducted midnight releases, promotions, and pre-ordering more readers. Customers who feared that their local bookstore would run out of copies responded by pre-ordering over 700,000 copies before the July 8, 2000 release. What does the underlined word “releases” (Para. 3) mean?A. The activity that frees or expresses energy or emotion.B. The announcement about the book’s publishing information.C. The sales of books that is available only at midnight.
The increase in international business and in foreign investment has created a need for executives with knowledge of foreign languages and skills in cross-cultural communication. Americans, however, have not been well trained in either area and, consequently, have not enjoyed the same level of success in negotiation in an international arena as have their foreign counterparts. Negotiating is the process of communicating back and forth for the purpose of reaching an agreement. It involves persuasion and compromise, but in order to participate in either one, the negotiators must understand the ways in which people are persuaded and how compromise is reached within the culture of the negotiation. In many international business negotiations abroad, Americans are perceived as wealthy and impersonal. It often appears to the foreign negotiator that the American represents a large multi-million-dollar corporation that can afford to pay the price without bargaining further. The American negotiator’s role becomes that of an impersonal supplier of information and cash. In studies of American negotiators abroad, several traits have been identified that may serve to confirm this stereotypical perception, while undermining the negotiator’s position. Two traits in particular that cause cross-cultural misunderstanding are directness and impatience on the part of the American negotiator. Furthermore, American negotiators often insist on realizing short-term goals. Foreign negotiators, on the other hand, may value the relationship established between negotiators and may be willing to invest time in it for long-term benefits. In order to solidify the relationship, they may opt for indirect interactions without regard for the time involved in getting to know the other negotiator. Clearly, perceptions and differences in values affect the outcomes of negotiations and the success of negotiators. For Americans to play a more effective role in international business negotiations, they must put forth more effort to improve cross-cultural understanding. [共5题](1)What kind of manager is needed in present international business and foreign investment? [本题2分]A. The man who represents a large multi-million-dollar corporation. B. The man with knowledge of foreign languages and skills in cross-cultural communication. C. The man who is wealthy and impersonal. D. The man who can negotiate with his foreign counterparts.

question or statement.Hot pot is a traditional dish in China. It is believed to date back more than 1,000 years to the time of the Jin Dynasty. Hot pot's origins can be found in the dining practices of Mongolian horsemen who rode across the steppe and into northern China. Legend has it that the Mongols used their helmets as pots to simmer (炖) broth (汤底) over open fires, and cooked chunks of meat in the broth.Hot pot cooking seems to have spread to northern China during the Tang Dynasty. In the regional variations developed with different ingredients such as seafood. In the centuries that witnessed the growth of the Song Dynasty, hot pot moved — and changed — further south, with each successive region adapting it to their local ingredients and tastes. The ingredients in a hot pot vary a lot from region to region. Perhaps the most famous hot pot is the Chongqing or Sichuan hot pot. It features a dark red broth chock-full (塞满了的) of spices, chili peppers, and the uniquely mouth-numbing Sichuan peppers. In Beijing and elsewhere in the north, hot pot broth tends to be mild and, compared to its racy southern "cousins", a little light. In the northeast of China, a kind of local sauerkraut (酸菜) is used to add some tang (强烈的味道), making the broth a bit sour. People can choose a version of hot pot according to their taste.1 Hot pot is believed to date back more than 1,000 years to the time of _______.A. the Jin Dynasty B. the Tang DynastyC. the Song Dynasty D. the Yuan Dynasty
