Just seven years ago,the Jarvik-7 artificial(人造的)heart was being cheered as the model of human creativeness. The sight of Barney Clark―alive and conscious after trading his diseased heart for a metal-and-plastic pump^convinced the press, the public and many doctors that the future had arrived. It hadn't. After monitoring production of the Jarvik-7, and reviewing its effects on the 150 or so patients (most of whom got the device as a temporary measure ) ,the U.S. Food and Drug Administration concluded that the machine was doing more to endanger lives than to save them. Last week the agency cancelled its earlier approval, effectively banning the device. The recall may hurt Symbion Inc.,maker of the Jarvik-7,but it won' t end the request for an artificial heart. One problem with the banned model is that the tubes connecting it to an external power source created a passage for infection. Inventors are now working on new devices that would be fully placed, along with a tiny power pack,in the patient's chest. The first sample products aren't expected for another 10 or 20 years. But some people are already worrying whether they'll work―and that America's overextended (开支过大的)health-care programs will lose a precious 2.5 billion to 5 billion a year providing them for a relatively few dying patients. If such expenditures(开支)cut into funding for more basic care, the net effect could actually be a decline in the nation,s health. ( ) 8. According to the passage, the Jarvik-7 artificial proved to be . A. a good life-saver B. a technical wonder C. an effective means to treat heart disease D. a technical failure ( ) 9. From the passage we know that Symbion Inc. . A. has been banned by the government from producing artificial hearts B. will review the effects of artificial hearts before designing new models C. may continue to work on new models D. can make new models of artificial hearts available on the market in 10 to 20 years ( ) 10. The new models of artificial hearts are expected . A. to have a working life of 10 or 20 years B. to be set fully in the patient' s chest C. to be equipped with an external power source D. to create a new passage for infection ( ) 11. The underlined word "them" refers to ―. A. doctors who treat heart diseases B. makers of artificial hearts C. America's health-care programs D. new models of artificial hearts ( ) 12. Some people feel that . A. artificial hearts are seldom effective B. the country is not spending enough money on artificial hearts C. the country should not spend so much money on artificial hearts D. Scientists are trying to make the deserts into good land again. They want to bring water to the deserts so that people can live and grow food. Even so, more and more of the earth is becoming desert all the time. Why Scientists think that people make deserts. People are doing bad things to the earth. Some people on the earth do not get very much rain. Yet, they still do not become deserts. This is because there are some small green plants growing there. Plants help keep water in the earth. Plants do not let the wind blow the dirt away. Without plants, the land can become a desert much more easily. A man decides to make a farm in a very dry place. He digs in the earth and takes away the grass and plants that are already growing on the dry land. He makes a farm. He puts plants in rows. The sun is very hot. It makes the land even drier. When the rain comes, it runs between the rows of plants. It washes the good dirt away. When the wind comes, it blows between the rows of plants. It blows the good dirt away. Soon the land is not good enough for a farm any more. The man lets his animals eat all the plants on it. Now the land does not have any plants on it. The sun and wind dry the land and all of the good dirt away, Now the land is a desert.A desert is probably () A.grassy B.wet C.treeless D.muddy

  • The increase in international business and in foreign investment has created a need for executives with knowledge of foreign languages and skills in cross-cultural communication. Americans, however, have not been well trained in either area and, consequently, have not enjoyed the same level of success in negotiation in an international arena as have their foreign counterparts. Negotiating is the process of communicating back and forth for the purpose of reaching an agreement. It involves persuasion and compromise, but in order to participate in either one, the negotiators must understand the ways in which people are persuaded and how compromise is reached within the culture of the negotiation. In many international business negotiations abroad, Americans are perceived as wealthy and impersonal. It often appears to the foreign negotiator that the American represents a large multi-million-dollar corporation that can afford to pay the price without bargaining further. The American negotiator’s role becomes that of an impersonal supplier of information and cash. In studies of American negotiators abroad, several traits have been identified that may serve to confirm this stereotypical perception, while undermining the negotiator’s position. Two traits in particular that cause cross-cultural misunderstanding are directness and impatience on the part of the American negotiator. Furthermore, American negotiators often insist on realizing short-term goals. Foreign negotiators, on the other hand, may value the relationship established between negotiators and may be willing to invest time in it for long-term benefits. In order to solidify the relationship, they may opt for indirect interactions without regard for the time involved in getting to know the other negotiator. Clearly, perceptions and differences in values affect the outcomes of negotiations and the success of negotiators. For Americans to play a more effective role in international business negotiations, they must put forth more effort to improve cross-cultural understanding. • "There is a senseless concept that children grow up and leave home when they're 18,and the truth is far from that,"says sociologist Larry Bumpass of the University of Wisconsin.Today, unexpected numbers of young adults are living with their parents."There is a major change in the middle class,"declares sociologist Allan Schnaiberg of Northwestern University, whose son,19,moved back in after an absence of eight months.Analysts list a variety of reasons for this return to the nest. The marriage age is rising,a condition that makes home and its pleasantness particularly attractive to young people.A high divorce rate and a declining remarriage rate are sending economically pressed and emotionally hurt survivors back to parental shelters. For some, the expense of an away-from-home college education has become so extremely great that many students now attend local schools.Even after graduation, young people find their wings clipped(夹住) by skyrocketing housing costs.Living at home, says Knighton,a school teacher, continues to give her security and moral support. Her mother agreed,"It's ridiculous for the kids to pay all that money for rent.It makes sense for kids to stay at home."But sharing the family home requires adjustments for all. There are the hassles over bathrooms, telephones and privacy. Some families, however, manage the delicate balancing act.But for others,it proves too difficult.Michelle Del Turco,24,has been home three times-and left three times."What I considered a social drink,my dad considered an alcohol problem,"she explains."He never liked anyone I dated,so I either had to hide away or meet them at friends'houses."Just how long should adult children live with their parents before moving on?Most psychologists feel lengthy homecomings are a mistake.Children struggling to establish separate identities, can end up with"a sense of inadequacy, defeat and failure."And aging parents, who should be enjoying some financial and personal freedom, find themselves stuck with responsibilities. Many agree that brief visits, however, can work beneficially.63.According to the author, there was once a trend (趋势) in the U.S ____ .A.for middle class young adults to stay with their parents.B.for young adults to get jobs nearby in order to live with their parents.C.for married young adults to move back home after a lengthy absence.D.for young adults to leave their parents and live independently.64.Which of the following does not account for young adults returning to the nest? ____ A.Young adults find housing costs too high.B.Quite a number of young adults attend local schools.C.Young adults are psychologically and intellectually immature.D.Young adults seek parental comfort and moral support.65.One of the disadvantages of young adults returning to stay with their parents is that ____ .A.the young adults tend to be overprotected by their parentsB.there will unavoidably be inconveniences in everyday lifeC.most parents find it difficult to keep a bigger family goingD.public opinion is against young adults staying with their parents66.The word"hassles"in the passage (Para.3,Line 4)probably means ____ .A.agreementsB.worriesC.disadvantagesD.quarrels
