Watching a child struggle to breathe during an asthma(哮喘) attack is frightening for any parent. So it is only natural that most moms and dads will try just about anything — including spending a lot of money — to keep an attack at 41 . Trouble is, more than half of parents are trying strategies that simply don't work and wasting hundreds of dollars in the 42 . According to Dr. Michael Cabana, a pediatrician at the University of Michigan's C.S. Mott Children's Hospital, who led the study, one of the most 43 mistakes was to buy a mattress cover to protect against dust mites(尘螨) for a child whose asthma instead was made even worse by plant pollen. Many of those parents then 44 to do what would have helped a lot more: shut the windows to keep pollen out. Another was using a humidifier for a child who was allergic(过敏) to dust mites; a humidifier 45 to be a place where dust mites like to 46 . With those allergies, a dehumidifier works better. Worst of all was the number of smokers with asthmatic children who didn't even try to quit or at least 47 themselves to smoking outdoors rather than just moving to another room or the garage. Many smoking parents 48 expensive air filters that have what Cabana called "questionable utility." Part of the problem, Dr. Cabana and his colleagues believe, is that parents are bombarded by television ads that encourage them to buy products such as air and carpet fresheners, ionizers and other remedies that are often expensive but medically 49 . And doctors may not always take the time, or have the time, to explain to parents what will and won't work in their child’s particular case. 1. 41 A: breed B: common C: limit D: spends E: process F: purchased G: tends H: bay I: unnecessary J: neglected 2. 42 A: breed B: common C: limit D: spends E: process F: purchased G: tends H: bay I: unnecessary J: neglected 3. 43 A: breed B: common C: limit D: spends E: process F: purchased G: tends H: bay I: unnecessary J: neglected 4. 44 A: breed B: common C: limit D: spends E: process F: purchased G: tends H: bay I: unnecessary J: neglected 5. 45 A: breed B: common C: limit D: spends E: process F: purchased G: tends H: bay I: unnecessary J: neglected 6. 46 A: breed B: common C: limit D: spends E: process F: purchased G: tends H: bay I: unnecessary J: neglected 7. 47 A: breed B: common C: limit D: spends E: process F: purchased G: tends H: bay I: unnecessary J: neglected 8. 48 A: breed B: common C: limit D: spends E: process F: purchased G: tends H: bay I: unnecessary J: neglected 9. 49 A: breed B: common C: limit D: spends E: process F: purchased G: tends H: bay I: unnecessary J: neglected

【题目】 Do you want to know something about the history of weather? Don't look at the sky. Don't look for old weather reports. Looking at tree rings is more important. Correct weather reports date back only one century, but some trees can provide an exact record of the weather even further back.It is natural that a tree would grow best in a climate with plenty of sunlight and rainfall. It is also expected that little sunlight or rainfall would limit the growth of a tree. The change from a favorable to an unfavorable climate can be determined by reading the pattern of rings in a tree trunk. To find out the weather of ten years ago, count the rings of a tree trunk from the outside to the inside. If the tenth ring is far from the other rings, then it is certain that plenty of sunny and rainy weather occurred. If the rings are close together, then the climate was bad for the tree.Studying tree rings is important not only for the history of weather, but also for the history of man. In a region of New Mexico you can find only sand--no trees and no people. However, many centuries ago a large population lived there. They left suddenly. Why?A scientist studied patterns of dead tree rings which had grown there. He decided that the people had to leave because they had cut down all the trees. Trees were necessary to make fires and buildings. So, after the people destroyed the trees, they had to move.In this instance studying tree rings uncovered an exciting fact about the history of man.【1】It is understood that in a favorable climate____________.A.tree rings grow close togetherB.tree rings grow far apartC.trees in New Mexico will grow big and tallD.people can cut down most of the trees in New Mexico【2】Why did ancient people usually live where there were plenty of trees?A.Trees provided them with shades.B.Trees indicated plenty of sunlight and rainfall.C.Trees were materials for cooking and building houses.D.Trees provided them with fruit and food.【3】Scientists are interested in studying tree rings because they can tell__________.A.a lot about what happened in history.B.whether a particular tree was healthy or not.C.whether people took good care of the trees or not.D.how old the trees were.【4】By studying the dead tree rings in Mexico the scientist found out____________.A.where the people had to goB.what the people had to eatC.how the people leftD.why the people had to leave【5】The people had to leave the region of New Mexico because__________.A.they had cut down all the treesB.there were many trees thereC.they had no waterD.bad weather stopped the growth of trees

  • question or statement.Hot pot is a traditional dish in China. It is believed to date back more than 1,000 years to the time of the Jin Dynasty. Hot pot's origins can be found in the dining practices of Mongolian horsemen who rode across the steppe and into northern China. Legend has it that the Mongols used their helmets as pots to simmer (炖) broth (汤底) over open fires, and cooked chunks of meat in the broth.Hot pot cooking seems to have spread to northern China during the Tang Dynasty. In the regional variations developed with different ingredients such as seafood. In the centuries that witnessed the growth of the Song Dynasty, hot pot moved — and changed — further south, with each successive region adapting it to their local ingredients and tastes. The ingredients in a hot pot vary a lot from region to region. Perhaps the most famous hot pot is the Chongqing or Sichuan hot pot. It features a dark red broth chock-full (塞满了的) of spices, chili peppers, and the uniquely mouth-numbing Sichuan peppers. In Beijing and elsewhere in the north, hot pot broth tends to be mild and, compared to its racy southern "cousins", a little light. In the northeast of China, a kind of local sauerkraut (酸菜) is used to add some tang (强烈的味道), making the broth a bit sour. People can choose a version of hot pot according to their taste.1 Hot pot is believed to date back more than 1,000 years to the time of _______.A. the Jin Dynasty B. the Tang DynastyC. the Song Dynasty D. the Yuan Dynasty

  • The Harry Potter series, written by J.K. Rowling, is perhaps the most popular set of novels of the modern era. With seven books and many successful films to its name, the series has gathered about 15 billion dollars in sales. How did the series become so popular? The reason can be broken down into several areas. The first book in the series was rejected 12 times before it was picked up by Bloomsbury—a small publisher in England. So receiving this contract was Rowling's first step to success. However, getting a book contract does not ensure the success of a book. The story was soon loved by children and adults alike. In light of this, Bloomsbury Publishing published a second version of the books with “adult” (less colorful and more boring) book covers. This made it easier for a full range of ages to enjoy the series.Another factor that worked like a charm was that the publisher and Rowling herself, through the books, conducted midnight releases, promotions, and pre-ordering more readers. Customers who feared that their local bookstore would run out of copies responded by pre-ordering over 700,000 copies before the July 8, 2000 release. What does the underlined word “releases” (Para. 3) mean?A. The activity that frees or expresses energy or emotion.B. The announcement about the book’s publishing information.C. The sales of books that is available only at midnight.

  • The increase in international business and in foreign investment has created a need for executives with knowledge of foreign languages and skills in cross-cultural communication. Americans, however, have not been well trained in either area and, consequently, have not enjoyed the same level of success in negotiation in an international arena as have their foreign counterparts. Negotiating is the process of communicating back and forth for the purpose of reaching an agreement. It involves persuasion and compromise, but in order to participate in either one, the negotiators must understand the ways in which people are persuaded and how compromise is reached within the culture of the negotiation. In many international business negotiations abroad, Americans are perceived as wealthy and impersonal. It often appears to the foreign negotiator that the American represents a large multi-million-dollar corporation that can afford to pay the price without bargaining further. The American negotiator’s role becomes that of an impersonal supplier of information and cash. In studies of American negotiators abroad, several traits have been identified that may serve to confirm this stereotypical perception, while undermining the negotiator’s position. Two traits in particular that cause cross-cultural misunderstanding are directness and impatience on the part of the American negotiator. Furthermore, American negotiators often insist on realizing short-term goals. Foreign negotiators, on the other hand, may value the relationship established between negotiators and may be willing to invest time in it for long-term benefits. In order to solidify the relationship, they may opt for indirect interactions without regard for the time involved in getting to know the other negotiator. Clearly, perceptions and differences in values affect the outcomes of negotiations and the success of negotiators. For Americans to play a more effective role in international business negotiations, they must put forth more effort to improve cross-cultural understanding.
