Questions 11 to 15 are based on the following passage. The MIT Sloan School of Management strongly believes that its purpose is to give students the tools they will need to be effective change agents in the rest of their careers. To do this it is necessary to start off with an understanding of the essential driving forces that will be forcing organizations to change. Change is not random, there are underlying processes. Three central driving forces—the growth of the world economy, the changing nature of the work force, and the arrival of genuine technological competition—are now at work. The globalization of the world capital markets that has occurred in the past 20 years will be replicated right across the economy in the next decade. The need to produce goods and services at quality levels previously thought impossible to obtain in mass production and the spreading use of participatory management techniques will require a work force with much higher levels of education and skills. Managers are increasingly shifting from a “don’t think, do what you are told” to a “think, I am not going to tell you what to do” style of management. To be on top of this situation, tomorrow’s managers will have to have a strong background in organizational psychology, human relations, and labor economics. The MIT Sloan School of Management attempts to advance our understanding in these areas through research and then quickly brings the fruits of this new research to our students so that they can be leading-edge managers when it comes to the human side of the equation. What this means is that American managers have to understand the forces of, technical change in ways that were not necessary in the past. Conversely, managers from the rest of the world know that it is now possible for them to dominate their American competitor if they understand the forces of technical change better than their American competitors do.In the world of tomorrow managers cannot be technologically illiterate regardless of their functional tasks within the firm. If they don’t understand what is going on and technology effectively becomes a black box, they will fail to make the changes that those who do understand what is going on inside the black box make. They will be losers, not winners.11. What is it essential for students to understand the driving forces that can force organizations to change?12. What will be needed to produce qualified goods and services in mass production and the spreading use of participatory management techniques?13. What does the MIT Sloan School of Management attempt to do in its research?14. What do we know about American managers from this passage?15. What can be inferred from this passage?第1题:A.Because the MIT Sloan School of Management emphasized its importance.B.ecause the world economy is changing.C.Because students need to be effective agents in their future careers.D.Because technological competition now is strong.第2题:E.mployers should have a sense of globalization.F.Employees should be well-educated and skillful in their jobs.G.Employers should adapt themselves to different styles of management.H.Employees should shift their positions from one to another.第3题:I.To help its students become first class managers.J.To test whether its students have a strong background in certain areas.K.To give some insights to those first class managers.L.To help its students advance their understandings in certain areas.第4题:M.They have been dominated by managers from other countries.N.They need to know more about technology.O.They know their competitors understand the forces of technical change better.P.They are technologically ready to be managers in the world of tomorrow.第5题:Q.The MIT Sloan School of Management has revealed what is going on inside the black box.R.American managers know more about technical change than managers from the rest of the world.S.The style of management is changing constantly.T.Every future manager should have cross-disciplinary knowledge.

19Questions 19 to 21 are based on the passage you have just heard. Despite smartphones and social media, (19) young people today are as socially competent as those from the previous generation. At least, this is what a new study suggests. For the study, researchers compared teacher and parent evaluations of American children who started kindergarten in 1998, with those who began school in 2010. The former group entered kindergarten when mobile phones were luxuries. The latter group started school when mobile devices were widespread. Results showed both groups of children were rated similarly on important social skills. These included their ability to form and maintain friendships and get along with people who are different. They were also rated similarly on self-control, such as the ability to regulate their temper. In virtually every comparison made, ratings of social skills either remain constant or improved for the children born later. (20) There was one exception: Social skills were slightly lower for children who accessed online games and social networking sites many times a day. (21) Adults are worried when technological change starts to undermine traditional relationships, particularly the parent-child relationship. The introduction of telephones, automobiles, and radio all led to moral panic among adults of the time, because the technology allowed children to enjoy more freedom. Fears over screen-based technology represent the most recent panic in response to technological change. But overall, the study found little evidence that time spent on screens was hurting social skills for most children.Questions 19 to 21 are based on the passage you have just heard. Question 19. What does the new study suggest about young people today and those from the previous generation? Question 20. What did the study find about children who accessed social networking sites many times a day? Question 21. What is adults’ worry about technological change? A、Both groups spend a lot of time on mobile devices.B、Both groups attach importance to social connections.C、They are equally competent in using new technology.D、They are similar in terms of social skills.
When I re-entered the full-time workforce a few years ago after a decade of solitary self-employment, there was one thing I was looking forward to the most: the opportunity to have work friends once again. It wasn"t until I entered the corporate world that I realized, for me at least, being friends with colleagues didn"t emerge as a priority at all. This is surprising when you consider the prevailing emphasis by scholars and trainers and managers on the importance of cultivating close interpersonal relationships at work. So much research has explored the way in which collegial (同事的)ties can help overcome a range of workplace issues affecting productivity and the quality of work output such as team-based conflict, jealousy, undermining, anger, and more.Perhaps my expectations of lunches, water-cooler gossip and caring, deep-and-meaningful conversations were a legacy of the last time I was in that kind of office environment. Whereas now, as I near the end of my fourth decade, I realize work can be fully functional and entirely fulfilling without needing to be best mates with the people sitting next to you.In an academic analysis just published in the profoundly-respected Journal of Management, researchers have looked at the concept of "indifferent relationships". It"s a simple term that encapsulates (概括) the fact that relationships at work can reasonably be non-intimate, inconsequential, unimportant and even, dare I say it, disposable or substitutable.Indifferent relationships are neither positive nor negative. The limited research conducted thus far indicates they"re especially dominant among those who value independence over cooperation, and harmony over confrontation. Indifference is also the preferred option among those who are socially lazy. Maintaining relationships over the long term takes effort. For some of us, too much effort .As noted above, indifferent relationships may not always be the most helpful approach in resolving some of the issues that pop up at work. But there are nonetheless several empirically proven benefits. One of those is efficiency. Less time chatting and socializing means more time working and(产出).The other is self-esteem. As human beings, we"re primed to compare ourselves to each other in what is an anxiety-inducing phenomenon. Apparently, we look down on acquaintances more so than Mends. Since the former is most common among those inclined towards indifferent relationships, their predominance can bolster individuals" sense of self-worth.Ego aside, a third advantage is that the emotional neutrality of indifferent relationships has been found to enhance critical evaluation, to strengthen one"s focus on task resolution, and to gain greater access to valuable information. None of that might be as fun as after-work socializing but, hey, I"ll take it anyway.46. What did the author realize when he re-entered the corporate world?A) Making new Mends with his workmates was not as easy as he had anticipated.B) Cultivating positive interpersonal relationships helped him expel solitary feelings.C) Working in the corporate world requires more interpersonal skills than self-employment.D) Building close relationships with his colleagues was not as important as he had ejected.47. What do we learn from many studies about collegial relationships?A) Inharmonious relationships have an adverse effect on productivity.B) Harmonious relationships are what many companies aim to cultivate.C) Close collegial relationships contribute very little to product quality.D) Conflicting relationships in the workplace exist almost everywhere.48. What can be inferred about relationships at work from an academic analysis?A) They should be cultivated.B) They are virtually irrelevant.C) They are vital to corporate culture.D) They should be reasonably intimate.49. What does the author say about people who are socially lazy?A) They feel uncomfortable when engaging in social interactions.B) They often find themselves in confrontation with their colleagues.C) They are unwilling to make efforts to maintain workplace relationships.D) They lack basic communication skills in dealing with interpersonal issues.60. What is one of the benefits of indifferent relationships?A) They provide fun at work.B) They help control emotions.C) They help resolve differences.D) They improve work efficiency.
Children are delight. They are our future. But sadly, hiring someone to take care of them while you go to work is getting more expensive by the year. Earlier this month, it was reported that the cost of enrolling an infant or small kid at a childcare center rose 3% in 2012, faster than the overall cost of living. These are now large strips of the country where daycare for an infant costs more than a tenth of the average married couple's income. This is not necessarily a new trend, but it is a somewhat puzzling one. The price of professional childcare has been rising since the 1980s. Yet during that time, pay for professional childcare workers has stood still. Actually caregivers make less today, in real terms, than they did in 1990. Considering that labor costs are responsible for up to 80% of a daycare center's expenses, one would expect flat wages to have meant flat prices. So who's to blame for higher childcare costs? Childcare is a carefully regulated industry. States lay down rules about how many children each employee is allowed to watch over, the space care centers need per child, and other minute details. And the stricter the regulations, the higher the costs. If it has to hire a caregiver for every two children, it can't really achieve any economies of scale on labor to save money when other expenses go up. In Massachusetts, where childcare centers must hire one teacher for every three infants, the price of care averaged more than 16,000 per year. In Mississippi, where centers must hire one teacher for every five infants, the price of care averaged less than 5,000. Unfortunately, I don't have all the daycare-center regulations handy. But I wouldn't be surprised if as the rules have become more elaborate, prices have risen. The tradeoff (交换) might be worth it in some cases; after all, the health and safety of children should probably come before cheap service. But certainly, it doesn't seem to be an accident that some of the cheapest daycare available is in the least regulated South.1 What problem do parents of small kids have to face?A The ever-rising childcare prices.B The budgeting of family expenses.C The balance between work and family.D The selection of a good daycare center.2 What does the author feel puzzled about?A Why the prices of childcare vary greatly from state to state.B Why increased childcare prices have not led to better service.C Why childcare workers' pay has not increased with the rising childcare costs.D Why there is a severe shortage of childcare professionals in a number of states.3 What prevents childcare centers from saving money?A Steady increase in labor costs.B Strict government regulations.C Lack of support from the state.D High administrative expenses.4 Why is the average cost of childcare in Mississippi much lower than in Massachusetts?A The overall quality of services is not as good.B Payments for caregivers there are not as high.C Living expenses there are comparatively low.D Each teacher is allowed to care for more kids.5 What is the author's view on daycare service?A Caregivers should receive regular professional training.B Less elaborate rules about childcare might lower costs.C It is crucial to strike a balance between quality and costs.D It is better for different states to learn from each other.

The increase in international business and in foreign investment has created a need for executives with knowledge of foreign languages and skills in cross-cultural communication. Americans, however, have not been well trained in either area and, consequently, have not enjoyed the same level of success in negotiation in an international arena as have their foreign counterparts. Negotiating is the process of communicating back and forth for the purpose of reaching an agreement. It involves persuasion and compromise, but in order to participate in either one, the negotiators must understand the ways in which people are persuaded and how compromise is reached within the culture of the negotiation. In many international business negotiations abroad, Americans are perceived as wealthy and impersonal. It often appears to the foreign negotiator that the American represents a large multi-million-dollar corporation that can afford to pay the price without bargaining further. The American negotiator’s role becomes that of an impersonal supplier of information and cash. In studies of American negotiators abroad, several traits have been identified that may serve to confirm this stereotypical perception, while undermining the negotiator’s position. Two traits in particular that cause cross-cultural misunderstanding are directness and impatience on the part of the American negotiator. Furthermore, American negotiators often insist on realizing short-term goals. Foreign negotiators, on the other hand, may value the relationship established between negotiators and may be willing to invest time in it for long-term benefits. In order to solidify the relationship, they may opt for indirect interactions without regard for the time involved in getting to know the other negotiator. Clearly, perceptions and differences in values affect the outcomes of negotiations and the success of negotiators. For Americans to play a more effective role in international business negotiations, they must put forth more effort to improve cross-cultural understanding. [共5题](1)What kind of manager is needed in present international business and foreign investment? [本题2分]A. The man who represents a large multi-million-dollar corporation. B. The man with knowledge of foreign languages and skills in cross-cultural communication. C. The man who is wealthy and impersonal. D. The man who can negotiate with his foreign counterparts.

The Harry Potter series, written by J.K. Rowling, is perhaps the most popular set of novels of the modern era. With seven books and many successful films to its name, the series has gathered about 15 billion dollars in sales. How did the series become so popular? The reason can be broken down into several areas. The first book in the series was rejected 12 times before it was picked up by Bloomsbury—a small publisher in England. So receiving this contract was Rowling's first step to success. However, getting a book contract does not ensure the success of a book. The story was soon loved by children and adults alike. In light of this, Bloomsbury Publishing published a second version of the books with “adult” (less colorful and more boring) book covers. This made it easier for a full range of ages to enjoy the series.Another factor that worked like a charm was that the publisher and Rowling herself, through the books, conducted midnight releases, promotions, and pre-ordering more readers. Customers who feared that their local bookstore would run out of copies responded by pre-ordering over 700,000 copies before the July 8, 2000 release. What does the underlined word “releases” (Para. 3) mean?A. The activity that frees or expresses energy or emotion.B. The announcement about the book’s publishing information.C. The sales of books that is available only at midnight.

Americans experience more food recalls (召回) today than they did five years ago, especially when it comes to meat and poultry (家禽). Meat and poultry recalls increased by two-thirds from 2013 to 2018, while food recalls overall went up 10%, according to the report recently published by the U.S. Public Interest Research Group.Meanwhile, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates (估计) 48 million people get sick, 128,000 are hospitalized and 3,000 die from food-borne disease each year in the U.S. "We are looking for the farm-to-fork preventative solutions," said Adam Garber, the research group's consumer watchdog. "By doing that, we can protect people's health."Over the five-year period, poultry posted the most recalls (168), followed by beef (137) and pork (128). The report shows the most serious meat recalls are on the rise. Among meat and poultry, the number of Class I recalls has increased by 83%, nearly doubling. Class I, the most serious of the recalls, is issued when there is a reasonable probability that the food will cause health problems or death.53. When would Class I recalls be issued?A.
