I'm standing in a class of wild 14-year-old girls as they throw paper and howl (大声叫喊) with laughter. They won't listen to me. I was a young girl of 22 and I didn't know what I was doing. I never wanted to teach . I wanted to be a writer. But when I arrived in London, they were short of teachers. My efforts at teaching were hopeless. When the bell finally rang, I rushed to the staff room, red with anger. The other teachers weren't surprised. “That's 4B, the worst class in the school.” one said. I feared our next meeting, but I couldn't give up. I needed the job, so I gave up formal lessons. Instead, I brought topics for class discussions. One of the liveliest talks was about the arguments they had with their parents. They paid attention and shared about their lives. I was very interested, so I had them write about themselves. Most wrote about families with little money and big problems. As time went on, their articles became a bridge between us. I admired their humor, toughness and insight (洞察力), and I thought they appreciated my interest in their lives. The musical My Fair Lady was playing in the West End, but they had never seen a live stage performance. I asked if they'd like to see the musical, but they thought I was joking. No teacher had ever suggested taking them out. a few weeks later, 4B and I were sitting in a theater. They loved the music, the costumes and the characters. It was the highlight of their year, and they talked about it for days. Near the end of the term, someone knocked on the door of the staff room. The two most rebellious(ik)girls in 4B were there with flowers. I was proud to know I had touched their lives, and they had also touched mine.I enjoyed teaching and getting along with teenagers. When I returned to Australia several years later, I still wanted to be a writer .For the first time in my life, I stopped dreaming and started writing. My first story was titled, My fair Ladies. Teaching wasn't the end of my writing career, but it was the beginning.【小题1】How were the author's students at the beginning? The Eskimos have developed a capacity to live peacefully with one another. They have not had a strict system of landownership, one of the universal causes of conflict. They have evolved a system of food-sharing among families that makes the preservation of life possible. The absolute necessity of creating this safeguard against starvation has strengthened bonds between neighbors. Almost every traveler has noted the Eskimos’ friendliness and good humor toward strangers and among themselves. In a country where agriculture is impossible they have been forced to spend their energies in food-gathering rather than warfare. If one family disagreed with another, the usual solution was for that family to pick up its few possessions and go elsewhere. In the vast unused land, moving presented almost no problem. The practice of infanticide, and suicide among the old people, seems to have been a factor of survival in times of food scarcity. The size of the family was controlled to some extent by the ability of the father as a hunter and by the abundance of (猎物) in the area. Marriage was a very serious and lifelong bond among Eskimos; in order to choose a permanent and compatible mate a number of trial marriages were permitted, each lasting perhaps haft a year. During the trial period a couple usually lived with the girl’s parents and the young man hunted exclusively for his future father-in-law. If a child was born as a result of an unsuccessful trial marriage it was adopted by relatives or friends. Children are often given out for adoption in the Eskimos society and are eagerly adopted by other families, for the Eskimos’ camp and (游牧民族的) group represent a kind of extended family. (一夫多妻制) was occasionally practiced by the most successful hunters, but usually to protect a widow or a girl who had lost her father. The Eskimos live peacefully with one another because of ______. A. their system of landownership B. their system of food-sharingC. the development of agriculture D. their love for moving

Failure is probably the most exhausting experience a person ever has. There is nothing more tiring than not succeeding. We experience this tiredness in two ways: as start-up fatigue (疲惫) and performance fatigue. In the former case, we keep putting off a task because it is either too boring or too difficult. And the longer we delay it, the more tired we feel. Such start-up fatigue is very real, even if not actually physical, not something in our muscles and bones. The solution is obvious though perhaps not easy to apply: always handle the most difficult job first. Years ago, I was asked to write 102essays on the great ideas of some famous authors. Applying my own rule, I determined to write them in alphabetical (按字母顺序), never letting myself leave out a tough idea. And I always started the day's work with the difficult task of essay-writing. Experience proved that the rule works. Performance fatigue is more difficult to handle. Though willing to get started, we cannot seem to do the job right. Its difficulties appear so great that, however hard we work, we fail again and again. In such a situation, I work as hard as I can-then let the unconscious take over. When planning Encyclopaedia Britannica (《大英百科全书》), I had to create a table of contents based on the topics of its articles. Nothing like this had ever been done before, and day after day I kept coming up with solutions, but none of them worked. My fatigue became almost unbearable. One day, mentally exhausted, I wrote down all the reasons why this problem could not be solved. I tried to convince myself that the trouble was with the problem itself, not with me. Relieved, I sat back in an easy chair and fell asleep. An hour later, I woke up suddenly with the solution clearly in mind. In the weeks that followed, the solution which had come up in my unconscious mind provided correct at every step. Though I worked as hard as before, I felt no fatigue. Success was now as exciting as failure had been depressing. Human beings, I believe, must try to succeed. Success, then, means never feeling tired.(1)People with start-up fatigue are most likely to ____ .A. delay tasksB. work hardC. seek helpD. accept failure(2)What does the author recommend doing to prevent start-up fatigue? ____ A. Writing essays in strict order.B. Building up physical strength.C. Leaving out the toughest ideas.D. Dealing with the hardest task first.(3)On what occasion does a person probably suffer from performance fatigue? ____ A. Before starting a difficult task.B. When all the solutions fail.C. If the job is rather boring.D. After finding a way out.(4)According to the author, the unconscious mind may help us ____ .A. ignore mental problemsB. get some nice sleepC. gain complete reliefD. find the right solution(5)What could be the best title for the passage? ____ A. Success Is Built upon FailureB. How to Handle Performance FatigueC. Getting over Fatigue: A Way to SuccessD. Fatigue: An Early Sign of Health Problems
scrolling through your facebook news feed, refreshing twitter and watching youtube videos. A smartphone might feel like it's keeping you connected but it can also be a way of isolating yourself.Data from a recent study conducted by researchers at Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine found that the scenario described above--high volume of phone use and a static geographic location--could be linked to depression. The study published in The Journal of Medical Internet Research, also found that depressed people, on average, spend more time on the phone than non-depressed people."People are likely, when on their phones, to avoid thinking about things that are troubling painful feelings or difficult relationships," said David Mohr, one of the study's senior authors and a professor of behavioral psychology at Northwestern, in a statement. "It's an avoidance behavior we see in depression." Mohr also pointed out that depressed people tend to withdraw emotionally and avoid going out--behaviors that are arguably facilitated by the constant entertainment stream available on smartphones. The study's participants consisted of a mix of people with and without prior depression. They completed a questionnaire describing their symptoms before agreeing to have their phone use monitored for two weeks. Using GPS, the researchers tracked their location and the amount of time they spent on the phone. They were then able to identify which participants were depressed using the aggregated phone data, with 87 percent accuracy.Sohrob Saeb, a research fellow at Northwestern, said in the release that phones could be more reliable for diagnosing depression than traditional methods. In standard industry practice, patients are often asked to describe their symptoms by indicating how sad they are on a scale of 1 to 10. According to Saeb, the release reported, these responses can be rote and unreliable. In contrast, the study found, a smartphone can unobtrusively (不引人注目地) and accurately measure a patient's daily activity, providing data that could trigger a health care provider to recognize the need for an intervention. What can be learned from the study conducted by researchers at Northwestern University?A Too much time spent on phones leads to depressionB Depressed people tend to spend more time on phones than othersC Spending more time on phones can help cure depressionD Non-depressed people spend link time on their phones

The increase in international business and in foreign investment has created a need for executives with knowledge of foreign languages and skills in cross-cultural communication. Americans, however, have not been well trained in either area and, consequently, have not enjoyed the same level of success in negotiation in an international arena as have their foreign counterparts. Negotiating is the process of communicating back and forth for the purpose of reaching an agreement. It involves persuasion and compromise, but in order to participate in either one, the negotiators must understand the ways in which people are persuaded and how compromise is reached within the culture of the negotiation. In many international business negotiations abroad, Americans are perceived as wealthy and impersonal. It often appears to the foreign negotiator that the American represents a large multi-million-dollar corporation that can afford to pay the price without bargaining further. The American negotiator’s role becomes that of an impersonal supplier of information and cash. In studies of American negotiators abroad, several traits have been identified that may serve to confirm this stereotypical perception, while undermining the negotiator’s position. Two traits in particular that cause cross-cultural misunderstanding are directness and impatience on the part of the American negotiator. Furthermore, American negotiators often insist on realizing short-term goals. Foreign negotiators, on the other hand, may value the relationship established between negotiators and may be willing to invest time in it for long-term benefits. In order to solidify the relationship, they may opt for indirect interactions without regard for the time involved in getting to know the other negotiator. Clearly, perceptions and differences in values affect the outcomes of negotiations and the success of negotiators. For Americans to play a more effective role in international business negotiations, they must put forth more effort to improve cross-cultural understanding. The Harry Potter series, written by J.K. Rowling, is perhaps the most popular set of novels of the modern era. With seven books and many successful films to its name, the series has gathered about 15 billion dollars in sales. How did the series become so popular? The reason can be broken down into several areas. The first book in the series was rejected 12 times before it was picked up by Bloomsbury—a small publisher in England. So receiving this contract was Rowling's first step to success. However, getting a book contract does not ensure the success of a book. The story was soon loved by children and adults alike. In light of this, Bloomsbury Publishing published a second version of the books with “adult” (less colorful and more boring) book covers. This made it easier for a full range of ages to enjoy the series.Another factor that worked like a charm was that the publisher and Rowling herself, through the books, conducted midnight releases, promotions, and pre-ordering more readers. Customers who feared that their local bookstore would run out of copies responded by pre-ordering over 700,000 copies before the July 8, 2000 release. What does the underlined word “releases” (Para. 3) mean?A. The activity that frees or expresses energy or emotion.B. The announcement about the book’s publishing information.C. The sales of books that is available only at midnight.
question or statement.Hot pot is a traditional dish in China. It is believed to date back more than 1,000 years to the time of the Jin Dynasty. Hot pot's origins can be found in the dining practices of Mongolian horsemen who rode across the steppe and into northern China. Legend has it that the Mongols used their helmets as pots to simmer (炖) broth (汤底) over open fires, and cooked chunks of meat in the broth.Hot pot cooking seems to have spread to northern China during the Tang Dynasty. In the regional variations developed with different ingredients such as seafood. In the centuries that witnessed the growth of the Song Dynasty, hot pot moved — and changed — further south, with each successive region adapting it to their local ingredients and tastes. The ingredients in a hot pot vary a lot from region to region. Perhaps the most famous hot pot is the Chongqing or Sichuan hot pot. It features a dark red broth chock-full (塞满了的) of spices, chili peppers, and the uniquely mouth-numbing Sichuan peppers. In Beijing and elsewhere in the north, hot pot broth tends to be mild and, compared to its racy southern "cousins", a little light. In the northeast of China, a kind of local sauerkraut (酸菜) is used to add some tang (强烈的味道), making the broth a bit sour. People can choose a version of hot pot according to their taste.1 Hot pot is believed to date back more than 1,000 years to the time of _______.A. the Jin Dynasty B. the Tang DynastyC. the Song Dynasty D. the Yuan Dynasty
