题目

I wish I could say I knew the exact moment when I decided to drop out of university. My sixth form prioritized going to university above any other path, so with little knowledge about other options, I applied to study journalism. I thought I was going to take the usual route into the profession: a degree followed by a series of internships and finally a staff job. Instead, I left the course after the first year because I struggled to engage with it; I realized I’d be better off learning on the job. After two years in retail, a spell in marketing and a lot of annoying editors and applying for jobs, I landed a staff role on a weekly magazine before going freelance at the beginning of 2016. With hindsight, I don’t think my career would have taken off any quicker had I completed the degree. Some people I’ve met were still interning two years after graduating and, in my experience, success rates seem to have more to do with contacts.Of course, some careers will always require a degree but I believe many industries, particularly creative ones, don’t necessarily require a qualification. When asked whether I have a degree during interviews, I always tell the truth . Both times I’ve been questioned, I’ve been offered the job, but it doesn’t often come up in conversation.I wouldn’t actively encourage anyone to drop out of university. If you’re really unsure about going, it’s better to look at alternative options rather than start a course and run the risk of quitting. Find out if vocational options, like apprenticeships, are available in the industry you want to work in. A hands-on route into a career might be better for you than an academic one.But if you are considering leaving university, do as many work placements as possible to come out armed with practical experience in your preferred industry. Research the sector you want to work in and, if necessary, start building a portfolio to demonstrate your experience. Don’t be afraid to contact businesses to ask about work placements and freelance opportunities, explaining your practical skills and that you want to gain work experience.1. Why did the author drop out of college?A) She found she didn’t like journalism any more.B) She wanted to learn journalism while working. C) She had to first improve her economic status.D) She thought the usual route took too much time.2. How does the author think of her decision to drop out?A) She feels it is worthwhile. B) She feels a little regretted.C) She thinks she would have developed better if she had got a degree.D) She has mixed feelings when she recalls her decision at that time.3. What do you think “the truth” refers to?A) She had no qualification but she desired to get the position.B) She left the course but she gained relevant work experience. C) She didn’t think the job she applied for required a degree.D) She had creative ideas and she took a degree for granted.4. What does “hands-on” probably mean?A) systematicB) practical C) undemandingD) theoretical5. What is the author’s advice for those who want to drop out of college?A) Think twice before they drop out of college.B) Consider other alternative options in advance.C) Put what they have learned into practice.D) Gain practical experience in their dream field.

  • The increase in international business and in foreign investment has created a need for executives with knowledge of foreign languages and skills in cross-cultural communication. Americans, however, have not been well trained in either area and, consequently, have not enjoyed the same level of success in negotiation in an international arena as have their foreign counterparts. Negotiating is the process of communicating back and forth for the purpose of reaching an agreement. It involves persuasion and compromise, but in order to participate in either one, the negotiators must understand the ways in which people are persuaded and how compromise is reached within the culture of the negotiation. In many international business negotiations abroad, Americans are perceived as wealthy and impersonal. It often appears to the foreign negotiator that the American represents a large multi-million-dollar corporation that can afford to pay the price without bargaining further. The American negotiator’s role becomes that of an impersonal supplier of information and cash. In studies of American negotiators abroad, several traits have been identified that may serve to confirm this stereotypical perception, while undermining the negotiator’s position. Two traits in particular that cause cross-cultural misunderstanding are directness and impatience on the part of the American negotiator. Furthermore, American negotiators often insist on realizing short-term goals. Foreign negotiators, on the other hand, may value the relationship established between negotiators and may be willing to invest time in it for long-term benefits. In order to solidify the relationship, they may opt for indirect interactions without regard for the time involved in getting to know the other negotiator. Clearly, perceptions and differences in values affect the outcomes of negotiations and the success of negotiators. For Americans to play a more effective role in international business negotiations, they must put forth more effort to improve cross-cultural understanding. • "There is a senseless concept that children grow up and leave home when they're 18,and the truth is far from that,"says sociologist Larry Bumpass of the University of Wisconsin.Today, unexpected numbers of young adults are living with their parents."There is a major change in the middle class,"declares sociologist Allan Schnaiberg of Northwestern University, whose son,19,moved back in after an absence of eight months.Analysts list a variety of reasons for this return to the nest. The marriage age is rising,a condition that makes home and its pleasantness particularly attractive to young people.A high divorce rate and a declining remarriage rate are sending economically pressed and emotionally hurt survivors back to parental shelters. For some, the expense of an away-from-home college education has become so extremely great that many students now attend local schools.Even after graduation, young people find their wings clipped(夹住) by skyrocketing housing costs.Living at home, says Knighton,a school teacher, continues to give her security and moral support. Her mother agreed,"It's ridiculous for the kids to pay all that money for rent.It makes sense for kids to stay at home."But sharing the family home requires adjustments for all. There are the hassles over bathrooms, telephones and privacy. Some families, however, manage the delicate balancing act.But for others,it proves too difficult.Michelle Del Turco,24,has been home three times-and left three times."What I considered a social drink,my dad considered an alcohol problem,"she explains."He never liked anyone I dated,so I either had to hide away or meet them at friends'houses."Just how long should adult children live with their parents before moving on?Most psychologists feel lengthy homecomings are a mistake.Children struggling to establish separate identities, can end up with"a sense of inadequacy, defeat and failure."And aging parents, who should be enjoying some financial and personal freedom, find themselves stuck with responsibilities. Many agree that brief visits, however, can work beneficially.63.According to the author, there was once a trend (趋势) in the U.S ____ .A.for middle class young adults to stay with their parents.B.for young adults to get jobs nearby in order to live with their parents.C.for married young adults to move back home after a lengthy absence.D.for young adults to leave their parents and live independently.64.Which of the following does not account for young adults returning to the nest? ____ A.Young adults find housing costs too high.B.Quite a number of young adults attend local schools.C.Young adults are psychologically and intellectually immature.D.Young adults seek parental comfort and moral support.65.One of the disadvantages of young adults returning to stay with their parents is that ____ .A.the young adults tend to be overprotected by their parentsB.there will unavoidably be inconveniences in everyday lifeC.most parents find it difficult to keep a bigger family goingD.public opinion is against young adults staying with their parents66.The word"hassles"in the passage (Para.3,Line 4)probably means ____ .A.agreementsB.worriesC.disadvantagesD.quarrels
