English was not my first language. French was actually my first language though I was born of American parents in Geneva, Switzerland. It was when I was five and moved to the United States that I started to learn English. In my new country, I lost my French completely. As French was the language that my parents spoke at home when they did not want me or my brothers to understand, French became associated in my mind with all sorts of negative feelings.Nevertheless in junior high school I chose to select French and even chose to stay in school for longer hours to take the class of a teacher that was still using traditional methods. The language of my birth, that must have remained somewhere in the deepest part of my brain, started coming back as the school year progressed. Unexpectedly, my father announced at the end of that year that we would be moving back to Switzerland. I arrived back in Europe with the confidence that I could speak French and continued to polish my language skills with my new classmates. About six months later I experienced a moment that I still recall clearly some 40 years on. I was shopping with my mother when I was reminded that the French I was using was not usually considered acceptable in polite society. This just goes to show that a little knowledge is a dangerous thing. However, I managed to overcome this moment of embarrassment and now French is my primary mode of communication.1.Which language did the speaker speak before the age of five?A) French. W: Oh I am sooooooooooo glad to be home. I’ve been on my feet all day at the hospital. I’m glad for my three-day work week and four-days off – but the 12-hour shift plus the 45-minute drive to and from work makes for a very, very long day! I’ve just got to get back up now and start some laundry and wash the dishes and get the kid’s lunches ready for school tomorrow.M: Ellen, honey – you shouldn’t do all of that after a 12-hour work day. That’s a relief. So, the kids pack their own lunches for school and do the dishes after dinner. So, we can increase their allowance to 6 per week. Beauty really is in the eye of the beholder. Research suggests that we view our loved ones through rose-tinted glasses that overlook the physical attributes that might put others off. As a result, husbands and wives think their other halves are more attractive than they really are. This "positive illusion" theory comes from researchers who asked 70 couples to rate their other halves for attractiveness. Questions included how attractive they thought their partner was to members of the opposite sex, and how attractive they thought their partner was compared to other people of the same sex and the same age. In addition, members of the public judged the looks of all 140 men and women taking part. The results, reported in The Journal of Social and Personal Relationships, revealed that couples rated the physical appeal of their own partners higher than that of strangers. Even asking them to rate pictures of their partners did not give them a reality check. Which of the following best summarizes the main idea of the passage?A. Appearance enhances happiness.B. Romance reduces marriage stability.C. Love is blind for a good reason.D. Attractiveness comes with age.

Most people around the world are right-handed. This fact also seems to have held true throughout history. In 1977, scientists studied works of art made at various times in history, starting with cave drawings from 15,000 B.C. E. and ending with paintings from the 1950s. Most artists of these works are right-handed, so scientists guessed that right-handedness has always been common. Despite the prevalence of right-handedness, left-handedness presents its own unique array of characteristics and tendencies. Many researchers claim to have found relationships between left-handedness and various physical and mental characteristics, such as blond hair, blue eyes, vegetarianism, and sleep difficulties. Other studies have found a higher-than-normal level of left-handed people in certain occupations, including professional baseball and tennis players, architects, lawyers, and so forth. However, some of these connections are very weak, and others haven't been proven. What makes a person become right-handed rather than left-handed? As yet, no one really knows for sure. One simple idea suggests that people normally get right-handedness from their parents. Studies have found that two right-handed parents have only a 9.5 percent chance of having a left-handed child, while two left-handed parents have a 26 percent chance of having a left-handed child. Another common theory is that left-handed people suffer mild brain damage during their birth. Whatever the reasons behind it, people's attitudes toward left-handedness have changed a lot over the years. Left-handed children used to be punished until they began using their right hand like other children, but today people who are left-handed are no longer looked down upon nor are they considered abnormal. Statistics show that although only six percent of the elderly are left-handed, 13 percent of young people (10-12 years old)are left-handed. This shift indicates a greater social acceptance and understanding of differences in individual characteristics. For most people today either case is perfectly acceptable. There are even a number of shops now that specialize in selling products designed for left-handed people, such as left-handed scissors, can openers, guitars, and even a left-handed camera. Don't you think it's wonderful? 1)From studying works of art, what have the scientists learned?A. Left-handed people are better artists.B. Most artists in history were right-handed.C. Right-handed people create more abstract art.D. Cave drawings were drawn with the right hands. 2)What, though not proven yet, has been found by many researchers?A. Left-handed people are usually professional.B. Left-handed people are good at doing certain jobs.C. Left-handedness can be caused by doing certain jobs.D. Left-handedness is linked with people's characteristics. 3)One suggested idea about what makes a person right-handed is ________.A. the genes from the person's parentsB. the environment where the person livesC. the severe brain damage at the person's birthD. the serious illness that the person experienced 4)What would happen to children of two left-handed parents from the studies in Para. 3?A. They are more likely to become left-handed.B. They are more likely to become vegetarianism.C. They are 9.5 percent more likely to become lawyers.D. They are 26 percent more likely to use both hands equally well. 5)From the passage, what can we learn about left-handedness?A. Left-handedness has aroused little attention.B. Left-handedness has caused a lot of problems.C. People today treat left-handedness the same as in the past.D. People today have positive attitudes toward left-handedness.

  • The Harry Potter series, written by J.K. Rowling, is perhaps the most popular set of novels of the modern era. With seven books and many successful films to its name, the series has gathered about 15 billion dollars in sales. How did the series become so popular? The reason can be broken down into several areas. The first book in the series was rejected 12 times before it was picked up by Bloomsbury—a small publisher in England. So receiving this contract was Rowling's first step to success. However, getting a book contract does not ensure the success of a book. The story was soon loved by children and adults alike. In light of this, Bloomsbury Publishing published a second version of the books with “adult” (less colorful and more boring) book covers. This made it easier for a full range of ages to enjoy the series.Another factor that worked like a charm was that the publisher and Rowling herself, through the books, conducted midnight releases, promotions, and pre-ordering more readers. Customers who feared that their local bookstore would run out of copies responded by pre-ordering over 700,000 copies before the July 8, 2000 release. What does the underlined word “releases” (Para. 3) mean?A. The activity that frees or expresses energy or emotion.B. The announcement about the book’s publishing information.C. The sales of books that is available only at midnight.

  • The increase in international business and in foreign investment has created a need for executives with knowledge of foreign languages and skills in cross-cultural communication. Americans, however, have not been well trained in either area and, consequently, have not enjoyed the same level of success in negotiation in an international arena as have their foreign counterparts. Negotiating is the process of communicating back and forth for the purpose of reaching an agreement. It involves persuasion and compromise, but in order to participate in either one, the negotiators must understand the ways in which people are persuaded and how compromise is reached within the culture of the negotiation. In many international business negotiations abroad, Americans are perceived as wealthy and impersonal. It often appears to the foreign negotiator that the American represents a large multi-million-dollar corporation that can afford to pay the price without bargaining further. The American negotiator’s role becomes that of an impersonal supplier of information and cash. In studies of American negotiators abroad, several traits have been identified that may serve to confirm this stereotypical perception, while undermining the negotiator’s position. Two traits in particular that cause cross-cultural misunderstanding are directness and impatience on the part of the American negotiator. Furthermore, American negotiators often insist on realizing short-term goals. Foreign negotiators, on the other hand, may value the relationship established between negotiators and may be willing to invest time in it for long-term benefits. In order to solidify the relationship, they may opt for indirect interactions without regard for the time involved in getting to know the other negotiator. Clearly, perceptions and differences in values affect the outcomes of negotiations and the success of negotiators. For Americans to play a more effective role in international business negotiations, they must put forth more effort to improve cross-cultural understanding. [共5题](1)What kind of manager is needed in present international business and foreign investment? [本题2分]A. The man who represents a large multi-million-dollar corporation. B. The man with knowledge of foreign languages and skills in cross-cultural communication. C. The man who is wealthy and impersonal. D. The man who can negotiate with his foreign counterparts.

  • question or statement.Hot pot is a traditional dish in China. It is believed to date back more than 1,000 years to the time of the Jin Dynasty. Hot pot's origins can be found in the dining practices of Mongolian horsemen who rode across the steppe and into northern China. Legend has it that the Mongols used their helmets as pots to simmer (炖) broth (汤底) over open fires, and cooked chunks of meat in the broth.Hot pot cooking seems to have spread to northern China during the Tang Dynasty. In the regional variations developed with different ingredients such as seafood. In the centuries that witnessed the growth of the Song Dynasty, hot pot moved — and changed — further south, with each successive region adapting it to their local ingredients and tastes. The ingredients in a hot pot vary a lot from region to region. Perhaps the most famous hot pot is the Chongqing or Sichuan hot pot. It features a dark red broth chock-full (塞满了的) of spices, chili peppers, and the uniquely mouth-numbing Sichuan peppers. In Beijing and elsewhere in the north, hot pot broth tends to be mild and, compared to its racy southern "cousins", a little light. In the northeast of China, a kind of local sauerkraut (酸菜) is used to add some tang (强烈的味道), making the broth a bit sour. People can choose a version of hot pot according to their taste.1 Hot pot is believed to date back more than 1,000 years to the time of _______.A. the Jin Dynasty B. the Tang DynastyC. the Song Dynasty D. the Yuan Dynasty
