阅读理解In North America, most students go to school by bus. The subway is also widely used in some cities. In small towns and cities, walking is still popular. The yellow school bus is a familiar sight all over North America. Buses are very convenient for people. Passengers can avoid heavy traffic and do not have to pay for the parking. However, taking the bus is just a necessary but boring part of life: they get on the bus, pay for it and sit down or find a place to stand when it is crowded. Everyone seems sad and bored. In Latin America, however, bus trips can be wonderful. For a start, films are showed on the buses between cities for passengers to have fun along the journey. Local buses do not show films, but drivers usually turn on the radio and it can be great for passengers to listen to songs and get relaxed.Even better than films and music are the sights and sounds on the buses. Local buses always go to parts of the town that passengers would not visit by themselves. There passengers can see shops that they have never heard about. And they can also see other cultures of the town.Besides, passengers' luggage(行李)is also interesting. It is common to see a happy dog's head getting out of somebody's bag. Once on a bus in Peru, a farmer even tied a sheep to the top of the bus. It was quite surprising. All in all, taking the bus in Latin America is really fun and unforgettable.(1)(2)题完成句子;(3)题简略回答问题;(4)题找出并写下全文的主题句;(5)题将文中画线句子译成汉语。 (1)On the local buses, drivers usually turn on the radio and it can be great for passengers to listen to songs and ________. I wish I could say I knew the exact moment when I decided to drop out of university. My sixth form prioritized going to university above any other path, so with little knowledge about other options, I applied to study journalism. I thought I was going to take the usual route into the profession: a degree followed by a series of internships and finally a staff job. Instead, I left the course after the first year because I struggled to engage with it; I realized I’d be better off learning on the job. After two years in retail, a spell in marketing and a lot of annoying editors and applying for jobs, I landed a staff role on a weekly magazine before going freelance at the beginning of 2016. With hindsight, I don’t think my career would have taken off any quicker had I completed the degree. Some people I’ve met were still interning two years after graduating and, in my experience, success rates seem to have more to do with contacts.Of course, some careers will always require a degree but I believe many industries, particularly creative ones, don’t necessarily require a qualification. When asked whether I have a degree during interviews, I always tell the truth . Both times I’ve been questioned, I’ve been offered the job, but it doesn’t often come up in conversation.I wouldn’t actively encourage anyone to drop out of university. If you’re really unsure about going, it’s better to look at alternative options rather than start a course and run the risk of quitting. Find out if vocational options, like apprenticeships, are available in the industry you want to work in. A hands-on route into a career might be better for you than an academic one.But if you are considering leaving university, do as many work placements as possible to come out armed with practical experience in your preferred industry. Research the sector you want to work in and, if necessary, start building a portfolio to demonstrate your experience. Don’t be afraid to contact businesses to ask about work placements and freelance opportunities, explaining your practical skills and that you want to gain work experience.1. Why did the author drop out of college?A) She found she didn’t like journalism any more.B) She wanted to learn journalism while working. C) She had to first improve her economic status.D) She thought the usual route took too much time.2. How does the author think of her decision to drop out?A) She feels it is worthwhile. B) She feels a little regretted.C) She thinks she would have developed better if she had got a degree.D) She has mixed feelings when she recalls her decision at that time.3. What do you think “the truth” refers to?A) She had no qualification but she desired to get the position.B) She left the course but she gained relevant work experience. C) She didn’t think the job she applied for required a degree.D) She had creative ideas and she took a degree for granted.4. What does “hands-on” probably mean?A) systematicB) practical C) undemandingD) theoretical5. What is the author’s advice for those who want to drop out of college?A) Think twice before they drop out of college.B) Consider other alternative options in advance.C) Put what they have learned into practice.D) Gain practical experience in their dream field.

It describes the harmful changes in the environment of using toxic chemicals on farmland.Carson's job started as a biologist in the US Bureau of Fisheries. In 1951 her first book The Sea Around Us came out, and it became a bestseller. It made her rich enough to leave her job and give her life to writing. She was a gifted writer. Her next two books were also about the oceans and both topped the book sales lists.Carson's book Silent Spring completely change the way America thought about nature. It painted a terrible future for the whole natural world. It led to a nationwide ban on the use of a deadly chemical called DDT, and other toxic things that farmers used for their crops. Many people say the book led to the creation of America's Environmental Protection Agency.Since her death, Carson's name has continued to be connected with protecting the environment. There is now a yearly Rachel Carson Prize. Norway awards the Rachel Carson Prize to women who have made great contributions to the field of environmental protection. That was the findings that built on earlier study findings. They show that those who live or work in low levels of light overnight can develop clinical depression. Doctors use the word "clinical depression" to describe serious form of depression. Signs of clinical depression may include losing interest or pleasure in most activities and having low energy levels and thoughts of death or suicide. In the new study, American researchers did an experiment that made hamsters see different colors. The researchers chose hamsters because they sleep during the day and are active at night. The animals were divided into different groups. One group of hamsters was kept in the dark during their night time period. Another group was placed in front of a blue light and a third group slept in front of a white light, while a fourth was put in front of a red light. After four weeks, the researchers noticed how much sugary water the hamsters drank. They found that the most depressed animals drank the least amount of water.Randy Nelson leads the Department of Neuroscience at Ohio State University. He says animals that slept in blue and white light appeared to be the most depressed. He says there's a lot of blue in white light. This explains why the blue and white light hamsters appear to be more depressed than the hamsters seeing red light or darkness.Randy Nelson has suggestions for people who work at night or those who like to stay up late. "My suggestion is: If you just stay active at night, you'd better not watch TV or computer screens. If you want to watch TV or computer screens, you can get filtered glass(过滤镜). You can get filtered glass on your computer screen or on your e-Reader to put it more in the red light."(1)Researchers use hamsters in the experiment because ______.A.they are easy to observe and studyB.they are sensitive to colors like humansC.they are active at night and sleep during the dayD.they are similar to humans in dealing with colors(2)There were ______ groups of hamsters during the experiment.A.one B.two C.three D.four(3)What sign shows that the hamsters are being depressed?A.They don't sleep well.B.They drink less sugary water.C.They see red light or darkness.D.Their energy level becomes low.(4)If we watch TV at night, we'd better try to see less ______.A.blue and dark light B.red light and darkness C.white and blue light D.white and red light(5)The main idea of the passage is about ______.A.signs of clinical depressionB.an experiment about hamstersC.filters on the computer screen or the e-ReaderD.the influence of the color of light on people's moodGive yourself a test. Which way is the wind blowing? How many kinds of wildflowers can be seen from your front door? If your awareness is as sharp as it could be, you'll have no trouble answering these questions. Most of us observed much more as children than we do as adults. A child's day is filled with fascination, newness and wonder. Curiosity gave us all a natural awareness. But distinctions that were sharp to us as children become unclear; we are numb(麻木的)to new stimulation(刺激), new ideas. Relearning the art of seeing the world around us is quite simple, although it takes practice and requires breaking some bad habits. The first step in awakening senses is to stop predicting what we are going to see and feel before it occurs. This blocks awareness. One chilly night when I was hiking in the Rocky Mountains with some students, I mentioned that we were going to cross a mountain stream. The students began complaining about how cold it would be. We reached the stream, and they unwillingly walked ahead. They were almost knee-deep when they realized it was a hot spring. Later they all admitted they'd felt cold water at first.Another block(障碍)to awareness is the obsession(痴迷)many of us have with naming things. I saw bird watchers who spotted a bird, immediately looked it up in field guides, and said, a "ruby-crowned kinglet" and checked it off. They no longer paid attention to the bird and never learned what it was doing. The pressures of "time" and "destination" are further blocks to awareness. I encountered many hikers who were headed to a distant camp-ground with just enough time to get there before dark. It seldom occurred to them to wander a bit, to take a moment to see what's around them. I asked them what they'd seen. "Oh, a few birds," they said. They seemed bent on their destinations.Nature seems to unfold to people who watch and wait. Next time you take a walk, no matter where it is, take in all the sights, sounds and sensations. Wander in this frame of mind and you will open a new dimension to your life.(1)According to Paragraph 2, compared with adults, children are more ______.A.anxious to do wondersB.sensitive to others' feelingsC.likely to develop unpleasant habitsD.eager to explore the world around them(2)What idea does the author convey in Paragraph 3?A.To avoid jumping to conclusions.B.To stop complaining all the time.C.To follow the teacher's advice.D.To admit mistakes honestly.(3)The bird watchers' behavior shows that they ______.A.are very patient in their observationB.are really fascinated by natureC.care only about the names of birdsD.question the accuracy of the field guides(4)Why do the hikers take no notice of the surroundings during the journey?A.The natural beauty isn't attractive to them.B.They focus on arriving at the camp in time.C.The forest in the dark is dangerous for them.D.They are keen to see rare birds at the destination.(5)In the passage, the author intends to tell us we should _____.A.fill our senses to feel the wonders of the worldB.get rid of some bad habits in our daily lifeC.open our mind to new things and ideasD.try our best to protect nature.

The Internet has enabled the spread of information at lightning speed. This information revolution has created tremendous business opportunities for online publishers, but not all of them maintain proper quality-control mechanisms to ensure that only good information is being shared. Instead, many publishers aim simply to make money by whatever means possible, with no regard for the implications for society at large. When selfish publishers set up shops online, the primary goal is to publish as much as possible, often at the cost of quality. In this respect, many publishers start numerous online journals focused on overlapping (重叠的) disciplines—to increase their total number of published papers—and hire young business managers who do not have any experience in either science or publishing. In some cases, online publishers even give up peer review, while still presenting themselves as scientific journals—deception designed to take advantage of scientists who simply want to share their research. If publishers structure their business to make more revenue, it often does harm to their products. When publishers start journals with overlapping domains, in combination with the pressure to publish more studies, this could promote the publication of marginal or even questionable articles. Moreover, publishers with multiple overlapping journals and journals with very narrow specialties (专业) increase the demands on the time and efforts of willing reviewers. With the fact that reviewers are generally not compensated for their time and effort, journal editors are often unable to find enough reviewers to keep up with the increased publication rate. To improve the situation and increase the trust in scientific community, the pressure to publish must be reduced. Funding and promotion decisions should not be based on the number of publications, but on the quality of those publications and a researcher's long-term productivity and instructions. And that's just the start. We need additional mechanisms, such as Beau's list of predatory (掠夺的) publishers, to alert scientists to fake journals and fake articles. In addition, the price for online publication must be controlled and a mechanism must be put in place to honor and reward hard-working reviewers.1What does the author think of online publishers?A. small proportion of them can guarantee their publishing quality.B.They have lots of opportunities to renovate their business models.C.Many of them tend to try every means to make a buck.D.Social impact is their first priority when publishing books.2It can be inferred from the second paragraph that________.E.peer review generally is a criterion to identify academic journalsF.researchers focus their research on the combination of disciplinesG.scientists care about their publications rather than researchH.young business managers are willing to face new challenges3Why can’t publishers find enough reviewers to review papers?I.Reviewers are pressed for time when reviewing articles.J.Reviewers’ gains can’t make up for what they have done.K.Publishers may compel reviewers to accept marginal articles.L.Publishers urge reviewers to increase publication rate rapidly.4What is the author’s suggestion for online publication?M.More weight should be put on the quantity of publications.N.It is worthwhile to reward diligent reviewers for their efforts.O.Fake journals should be reported to a regulatory organization.P.The price of online publication should be lowered greatly.5What is the main idea of this passage?Q.Online publishers should take measures to fight against fake scientific journals.R.Online publishers are pursuing their work efficiency at the cost of quality.S.Online publishers’ business models are quite likely to harm their publications.T.Online publishers are sacrificing the quality of research articles to make money.

  • The increase in international business and in foreign investment has created a need for executives with knowledge of foreign languages and skills in cross-cultural communication. Americans, however, have not been well trained in either area and, consequently, have not enjoyed the same level of success in negotiation in an international arena as have their foreign counterparts. Negotiating is the process of communicating back and forth for the purpose of reaching an agreement. It involves persuasion and compromise, but in order to participate in either one, the negotiators must understand the ways in which people are persuaded and how compromise is reached within the culture of the negotiation. In many international business negotiations abroad, Americans are perceived as wealthy and impersonal. It often appears to the foreign negotiator that the American represents a large multi-million-dollar corporation that can afford to pay the price without bargaining further. The American negotiator’s role becomes that of an impersonal supplier of information and cash. In studies of American negotiators abroad, several traits have been identified that may serve to confirm this stereotypical perception, while undermining the negotiator’s position. Two traits in particular that cause cross-cultural misunderstanding are directness and impatience on the part of the American negotiator. Furthermore, American negotiators often insist on realizing short-term goals. Foreign negotiators, on the other hand, may value the relationship established between negotiators and may be willing to invest time in it for long-term benefits. In order to solidify the relationship, they may opt for indirect interactions without regard for the time involved in getting to know the other negotiator. Clearly, perceptions and differences in values affect the outcomes of negotiations and the success of negotiators. For Americans to play a more effective role in international business negotiations, they must put forth more effort to improve cross-cultural understanding. • The Harry Potter series, written by J.K. Rowling, is perhaps the most popular set of novels of the modern era. With seven books and many successful films to its name, the series has gathered about 15 billion dollars in sales. How did the series become so popular? The reason can be broken down into several areas. The first book in the series was rejected 12 times before it was picked up by Bloomsbury—a small publisher in England. So receiving this contract was Rowling's first step to success. However, getting a book contract does not ensure the success of a book. The story was soon loved by children and adults alike. In light of this, Bloomsbury Publishing published a second version of the books with “adult” (less colorful and more boring) book covers. This made it easier for a full range of ages to enjoy the series.Another factor that worked like a charm was that the publisher and Rowling herself, through the books, conducted midnight releases, promotions, and pre-ordering more readers. Customers who feared that their local bookstore would run out of copies responded by pre-ordering over 700,000 copies before the July 8, 2000 release. What does the underlined word “releases” (Para. 3) mean?A. The activity that frees or expresses energy or emotion.B. The announcement about the book’s publishing information.C. The sales of books that is available only at midnight.
