Building Trust in a Relationship Again Trust is a learned behavior that we gain from past experiences. 36 Trust is a risk. But you can't be successful when there's a lack of trust in a relationship that results from an action where the wrongdoer takes no responsibility to fix the mistake. Unfortunately, we've all been victims of betrayal. Whether we've been stolen from, lied to, misled, or cheated on, there are different levels of losing trust. Sometimes people simply can't trust anymore. 37 It's understandable, but if you're willing to build trust in a relationship again, we have some steps you can take to get you there. ● 38 Having confidence in yourself will help you make better choices because you can see what the best outcome would be for your well-being. ● 39 If you've been betrayed, you are the victim of your circumstance. But there's a difference between being a victim and living with a "victim mentality". At some point in all of our lives, we'll have our trust tested or violated. ● You didn't lose "everything". Once trust is lost, what is left? Instead of looking at the situation from this hopeless angle, look at everything you still have and be thankful for all of the good in your life. 40 Instead, it's a healthy way to work through the experience to allow room for positive growth and forgiveness.1. 36A: Learn to really trust yourself.B: It is putting confidence in someone.C: Stop regarding yourself as the victim.D: Remember that you can expect the best in return.E: They've been too badly hurt and they can't bear to let it happen again.F: This knowledge carries over in their attitude toward their future relationships.G: Seeing the positive side of things doesn't mean you're ignoring what happened.2. 37A: Learn to really trust yourself.B: It is putting confidence in someone.C: Stop regarding yourself as the victim.D: Remember that you can expect the best in return.E: They've been too badly hurt and they can't bear to let it happen again.F: This knowledge carries over in their attitude toward their future relationships.G: Seeing the positive side of things doesn't mean you're ignoring what happened.3. 38A: Learn to really trust yourself.B: It is putting confidence in someone.C: Stop regarding yourself as the victim.D: Remember that you can expect the best in return.E: They've been too badly hurt and they can't bear to let it happen again.F: This knowledge carries over in their attitude toward their future relationships.G: Seeing the positive side of things doesn't mean you're ignoring what happened.4. 39A: Learn to really trust yourself.B: It is putting confidence in someone.C: Stop regarding yourself as the victim.D: Remember that you can expect the best in return.E: They've been too badly hurt and they can't bear to let it happen again.F: This knowledge carries over in their attitude toward their future relationships.G: Seeing the positive side of things doesn't mean you're ignoring what happened.5. 40A: Learn to really trust yourself.B: It is putting confidence in someone.C: Stop regarding yourself as the victim.D: Remember that you can expect the best in return.E: They've been too badly hurt and they can't bear to let it happen again.F: This knowledge carries over in their attitude toward their future relationship.G: Seeing the positive side of things doesn't mean you're ignoring what happened.

Call it the learning paradox:the more you struggle and even fail while you're trying to learn new information, the better you're likely to recall and apply that information later. The learning paradox is at the heart of"productive failure,"a phenomenon identified by researcher Manu Kapur points out that while the model adopted by many teachers when introducing students to new knowledge providing lots of structure and guidance early on,until the students show that they can do it on their own makes intuitive sense,it may not be the best way to promote learning.Rather,it's better to let the learners wrestle with the material on their own for a while, refraining from giving them any assistance at the start. In a paper published recently,Kapur applied the principle of productive failure to mathematical problem solving in three schools. With one group of students, the teacher provided strong"scaffolding"﹣﹣instructional support and feedback. With the teacher's help, these pupils were able to find the answers to their set of problems.Meanwhile,a second group was directed to solve the same problems by cooperating with one another, without any hints from their instructor. These students weren't able to complete the problems correctly. But in the course of trying to do so,they generated a lot of ideas about the nature of the problems and about what potential solutions would look like. And when the two groups were tested on what they'd learned the second group"significantly outperformed"the first. The apparent struggles of the second group have what Kapur calls a"hidden efficacy":they lead people to understand the deep structure of problems, not simply their correct solutions. When these students meet with a new problem of the same type on a test, they're able to transfer the knowledge they've gathered more effectively than those who were the passive recipients of someone else's expertise. In the real world, problems rarely come neatly packaged,so being able to discern their deep structure is key. But,Kapur notes, none of us like to fail,no matter how often Silicon Valley entrepreneurs praise the beneficial effects of an idea that fails or a start﹣up company that crashes and burns. So we need to"design for productive failure"by building it into the learning process,Kapur has identified three conditions that promote this kind of beneficial struggle.First, choose problems to work on that"challenge but do not frustrate."Second, provide learners with opportunities to explain and elaborate on what they're doing.Third, give learners the chance to compare and contrast good and bad solutions to the problems. And to those students who protest this tough﹣love teaching style:you'll thank me later. 59.Why does the author call the learning process a paradox? A.Pains do not necessarily lead to gains. B.What is learned is rarely applicable in life. C.Failure more often than not breeds success. D.The more is taught, the less is learned. 60.What does Kapur disapprove of in teaching? A.Asking students to find and solve problems on their own. B.Developing students ability to apply what they learn. C.Giving students detailed guidance and instruction. D.Allowing students a free hand in problem solving. 61.What kind of problem should be given to students to solve according to Kapur? A.It should be able to encourage collaborative learning. B.It should be easy enough so as not to frustrate students. C.It should be solvable by average students with ease. D.It should be difficult enough but still within their reach. 62.What can be expected of this tough﹣love teaching style? A.Students will be grateful in the long run. B.Teachers will meet with a lot of resistance. C.Parents will think it too harsh on their kids. D.It may not be able to yield the desired results.

Tai chi can relieve some of the most crippling symptoms of disabling conditions such as osteoarthritis, heart disease and chronic breathing problems in older people, a study shows. The ancient Chinese system of sports, which combines slow movements with deep breathing exercises, led to improvement in the physical function and muscle strength of people in their mid-50s to their mid-70s with those ailments or breast cancer. The findings should encourage health professionals to prescribe tai chi for patients with osteoarthritis or chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder (COPD), the Canadian authors say in the British Journal of Sports Medicine.“The results demonstrated a favorable effect or tendency of tai chi to improve physical performance and showed that this type of exercise could be performed by individuals with different chronic conditions, including COPD, heart failure and osteoarthritis”, the authors say. They analyzed 33 previous studies of evidence relating to the effectiveness of tai chi, involving data from 1,584 people. Taken together they “showed that tai chi improved or showed a tendency to improve physical performance outcomes, including six-minute walking distance and knee extensor strength, in most or all four chronic conditions.” The exercises also led to less pain and stiffness among osteoarthritis sufferers.NHS England said it believed that some general practitioners, other doctors and occupational therapists were prescribing tai chi to some patients, though it did not know how many were doing so or how much sessions of the exercise regime cost.Public Health England said tai chi was a valuable boost to physical activity. “Keeping physically active at any age is important for health, especially as you get older. Simple exercises like tai chi can be beneficial for mental health and well-being as well as building the confidence and stability,” said Dr. Justin Varney, national lead for adult health and well-being. “This contributes to the recommended 150 minutes a week of moderate activity and two sessions a week of muscle strengthening and balance exercises for older adults.”1. What do we learn from the first paragraph?A) Tai chi is a slow breathing exercise.B) Tai chi can relive muscle strength.C) Tai chi is beneficial to senior patients. D) Tai chi can improve disabling conditions.2. What is the finding of the Canadian authors?A) Tai chi has better effect on physical performance than on muscle strength.B) Tai chi has a good effect on the improvement of physical performance. C) Tai chi cannot be practiced by those people with chronic disorder.D) Tai chi can only relieve crippling symptoms of disabling conditions.3. What does the word “regime” (Para.5) most probably refer to?A) A detailed plan about someone’s daily life.B) A set of rules someone follows to stay healthy. C) A method of organizing something.D) A system of managing something.4. What does Dr. Justin Varney say about tai chi?A) It is useful for establishing confidence and stability. B) It can help people remain in good shape.C) It can help people cure mental problems.D) It is particularly advantageous to older adults.5. What might be the most suitable title for the passage?A) An Ancient Chinese Exercise.B) The Influence of Tai Chi on Mental Health.C) Tai Chi and Health Professionals.D) Tai Chi and Older Patients with Disabling Conditions.

  • The increase in international business and in foreign investment has created a need for executives with knowledge of foreign languages and skills in cross-cultural communication. Americans, however, have not been well trained in either area and, consequently, have not enjoyed the same level of success in negotiation in an international arena as have their foreign counterparts. Negotiating is the process of communicating back and forth for the purpose of reaching an agreement. It involves persuasion and compromise, but in order to participate in either one, the negotiators must understand the ways in which people are persuaded and how compromise is reached within the culture of the negotiation. In many international business negotiations abroad, Americans are perceived as wealthy and impersonal. It often appears to the foreign negotiator that the American represents a large multi-million-dollar corporation that can afford to pay the price without bargaining further. The American negotiator’s role becomes that of an impersonal supplier of information and cash. In studies of American negotiators abroad, several traits have been identified that may serve to confirm this stereotypical perception, while undermining the negotiator’s position. Two traits in particular that cause cross-cultural misunderstanding are directness and impatience on the part of the American negotiator. Furthermore, American negotiators often insist on realizing short-term goals. Foreign negotiators, on the other hand, may value the relationship established between negotiators and may be willing to invest time in it for long-term benefits. In order to solidify the relationship, they may opt for indirect interactions without regard for the time involved in getting to know the other negotiator. Clearly, perceptions and differences in values affect the outcomes of negotiations and the success of negotiators. For Americans to play a more effective role in international business negotiations, they must put forth more effort to improve cross-cultural understanding. [共5题](1)What kind of manager is needed in present international business and foreign investment? [本题2分]A. The man who represents a large multi-million-dollar corporation. B. The man with knowledge of foreign languages and skills in cross-cultural communication. C. The man who is wealthy and impersonal. D. The man who can negotiate with his foreign counterparts.

  • The Harry Potter series, written by J.K. Rowling, is perhaps the most popular set of novels of the modern era. With seven books and many successful films to its name, the series has gathered about 15 billion dollars in sales. How did the series become so popular? The reason can be broken down into several areas. The first book in the series was rejected 12 times before it was picked up by Bloomsbury—a small publisher in England. So receiving this contract was Rowling's first step to success. However, getting a book contract does not ensure the success of a book. The story was soon loved by children and adults alike. In light of this, Bloomsbury Publishing published a second version of the books with “adult” (less colorful and more boring) book covers. This made it easier for a full range of ages to enjoy the series.Another factor that worked like a charm was that the publisher and Rowling herself, through the books, conducted midnight releases, promotions, and pre-ordering more readers. Customers who feared that their local bookstore would run out of copies responded by pre-ordering over 700,000 copies before the July 8, 2000 release. What does the underlined word “releases” (Para. 3) mean?A. The activity that frees or expresses energy or emotion.B. The announcement about the book’s publishing information.C. The sales of books that is available only at midnight.

  • question or statement.Hot pot is a traditional dish in China. It is believed to date back more than 1,000 years to the time of the Jin Dynasty. Hot pot's origins can be found in the dining practices of Mongolian horsemen who rode across the steppe and into northern China. Legend has it that the Mongols used their helmets as pots to simmer (炖) broth (汤底) over open fires, and cooked chunks of meat in the broth.Hot pot cooking seems to have spread to northern China during the Tang Dynasty. In the regional variations developed with different ingredients such as seafood. In the centuries that witnessed the growth of the Song Dynasty, hot pot moved — and changed — further south, with each successive region adapting it to their local ingredients and tastes. The ingredients in a hot pot vary a lot from region to region. Perhaps the most famous hot pot is the Chongqing or Sichuan hot pot. It features a dark red broth chock-full (塞满了的) of spices, chili peppers, and the uniquely mouth-numbing Sichuan peppers. In Beijing and elsewhere in the north, hot pot broth tends to be mild and, compared to its racy southern "cousins", a little light. In the northeast of China, a kind of local sauerkraut (酸菜) is used to add some tang (强烈的味道), making the broth a bit sour. People can choose a version of hot pot according to their taste.1 Hot pot is believed to date back more than 1,000 years to the time of _______.A. the Jin Dynasty B. the Tang DynastyC. the Song Dynasty D. the Yuan Dynasty
