The celebration of International Women's Day (IWD) in 2011 was special as it marked the 100th anniversary of IWD. The United Nations’ theme for the 2011 IWD was “Equal access to education, training and science and technology: Pathway to decent work for women”.One hundred years ago, gender equality and women's empowerment were largely radical ideas. One hundred years later, there has been significant progress in women's empowerment and participation through determined advocacy, practical action and enlightened policy making.
