Task1 Reading in Depth Below is a passage with ten blanks. You are required to select one word for each blank from a list of choices given in a word bank following the passage. It was in 1910 that a member of Great Britain's polar exploration team would become a model for future generations of explorers. That year, the acclaimed explorer Robert Falcon Scott invited former officer Lawrence Oates to join his team on a(n)_ 1 _ to the South Pole. Intitally, Qates was appointed as a(n)2 for the team's19 ponies. However, his strength and soldierly 3 impressed Scott so much that he promoted Oates to the five-man team who would make the final push to the South Pole On the _4_ of November 1st,1911, the team set off on their journey. Some 79 days later, they made it to the Pole. There, however, they came across a tent left behind by the Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen and his team. Scott had been beaten by just 35 days. The team started heading back, struggling in the _5 conditions. After a few days, one of the members had died. Otates's feet were frostbitten, and his _ 6 _ was slow. Fearful that his condition was slowing down the rest of his party, and thereby placing them in _7_ , Oates decided to sacrifice himself. On March 17th, Oates left the tent.
